  1. If this is work, are you using the right tool for the job?  Instead of a handset, maybe you should be using a pro tablet or laptop that you can customize with as much RAM as you require.

Expecting what is at its core a phone to handle your workload and bemoaning its RAM capacity is a bit like saying, "Mr. Deringer, you need to improve your pistol.  I have been elephant hunting and run into much difficult trying to bring them down."

I actually think my usage is fairly normal. I'm not trying to run autocad on my phone or something. While at work I use my desktop and on the road I use a laptop. However, my phone comes into play for the inbetween times where I am in someone's office and want to look at a PDF of a part footprint. Mostly though my phone is used for the normal Netflix/Youtube/Twitch/Reddit/Chrome apps and I notice slowdowns doing these routine, to me, things occasionally.

Either way I think this should be resolved with my ordering a 6P which, as a phablet, is beefier in specs and also a larger screen for easier viewing of some of these things.

  2. Crosspost from the 6P thread:

Few options for cables if anyone is looking:

    3.3 ft (1 meter)

    $12.99 from Google https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_to_usb_standard_a_plug_cable

    $9.99 from Monoprice http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030319&p_id=13009&seq=1&format=2

    6 ft

    $19.99 from Belkin http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F2CU032/

    Adapter:

    $8.99 from Monoprice http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10330&cs_id=1033001&p_id=13507&seq=1&format=2

Anyways, big fan of Monoprice here. I will probably pick up a spare 3.3ft one and maybe an adapter.  I don't trust random Amazon sellers to provide quality cables.

  4. And I do not get the hand wringing over the 2 GB of RAM.

Let me use my 2013 Nexus 7 as an example. I am an inveterate Chrome tab collector. I tell myself to start closing some tabs, but then I cling to the idea that I may wish to refer back to those web pages in the future -- but I almost never do. Thus, I end up with dozens upon dozens of Chrome tabs open. I also typically have three or four other apps running. But guess what? According to the RAM usage in the Settings app, I have never seen it exceed 1 GB of RAM usage -- I always have at least 1 GB free.

So, either Android is lying to me or you guys who cannot live with 2 GB of RAM on a handheld device are not living right.

    AJ

Different use cases. Opening large documents (usually PDFs) definitely spike my ram usage. Even without having that open my current RAM stats look like this:

    GfV94DX.png?1

Right now I am at 1.7GB usage during a normal workday.

  5. I don't get the 'Nexus 5X is overpriced' story. It's not a budget device, but priced like one. It's only a hair more expensive than the original N5. It supports nearly every North American LTE band, LTE Advanced, has one of the best phone cameras ever created, is on the next version of Android that won't be on other devices for months, on and on and on. It is far better than the G2. It's far better than the previous N5.

As far as the LED goes, whatever happened to trust but verify? That was just Negative Nancy hysteria.

Yeah, the reality is that it isn't that the Nexus 5x is overpriced but that the 6P is so incredibly priced especially when you compare 32 GB Nexus 5x to 32 GB Nexus 6P. With only a $70 difference the specs you get on the 6P are incredible.

  6. Welcome to Sprint. You'll find most of us just believe in people choosing the best carrier for where they live that gives them the most value. For some people that will be T-Mobile or the other carriers but increasingly the best value and speed option will be Sprint going forward.

  7. Totally agree with this.  Plus, it's a preorder.  I've never heard of a preorder selling out.

On a somewhat related note... I went ahead and ordered a SIM through international chat this afternoon.  It's the one SeanK posted last night.

I'm extremely excited about this phone!

Here are my (smartphone) devices since I've been with Sprint, which is around 15 years now.

    HTC TouchPro

    HTC Evo

    HTC Evo 4GLTE

    LGG3

Really excited about my first Nexus phone.  I've got the Nexus 9 tablet and it's fantastic (in my opinion and for my needs)

You are going to love it. I went from Evo to Evo 3D to Nexus 5 and now Nexus 6P. Just even the ability to edit the animation speed is awesome and I love not having a skin on top of Android and just doing what I want. The only drawback on my N5 was mediocre battery life and a poor stock camera app both of which look to be resolved in the new phones.

It got taken down.  Somebody jumped the gun.

We’re excited about a lot of things at Sprint these days, but for those of us that work on the network, our 2.5GHz carrier aggregation deployment probably tops the list. The roll-out of two-channel carrier aggregation and antenna beamforming is well underway, and the technology is being used to rapidly improve speeds and performance on high-traffic sites in 80 markets. We’re working aggressively and we’re applying what we learn along the way.

Independent mobile analytics firm RootMetrics® routinely tests our network, and during their test in August 2015 we were experiencing optimization issues related to our carrier aggregation deployment. This test was a snapshot in time, the issue was limited to Las Vegas, and it was quickly resolved. In fact, RootMetrics in the last few weeks conducted five days of extensive data network testing in Las Vegas and found that Sprint’s median download speed increased from 9.2Mbps to 18.4Mbps. Earlier this week one of my team members in Vegas with a carrier aggregation capable phone captured download speeds at more than 70Mbps along the strip, more than 80Mbps near Warm Springs and Rainbow, and saw download speeds range between 45-65Mbps near McCarren Airport.

We’re also seeing strong data performance in other metro markets such as San Francisco and Chicago where carrier aggregation is being deployed. And we’re also excited about the potential of our 2.5GHz spectrum treasure trove which is well suited to move large amounts of data at very high speed. As customer’s demand for mobile data continues to grow, so too will the capacity of our network. #MoveForward

  9. Wow, it always amazes me what they'll skip. LED notifications? Sheesh.

Just to confirm: you're saying it doesn't have the blinking color notification light?

Sent from my SM-G925P using Tapatalk

    That is correct.

The 6P clearly lists an LED https://store.google.com/product/nexus_6p under full specifications -> "Other" where the 5x does not https://store.google.com/product/nexus_5x

You will see it also correctly says the 5x has a single speaker to the dual speakers of the 6P

Edit: IT DOES HAVE A NOTIFICATION LED

    http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/09/29/the-nexus-5x-does-have-a-true-rgb-notification-led-just-like-the-6p-but-its-missing-from-the-spec-list/

  11. well, thats the other part of the problem...i dont understand the use of those numbers in the wall article.  i gather the higher the number the better in this instance but beyond that i do not understand the context they are used.

Both will work great. Higher B25 and B26 performance means the 5x might pick up building penetrating LTE (850 mhz and 1900 mhz) better but the higher B41 performance of the 6P means it might hold on to the big daddy bandwidth B41 signal longer.

  12. Just a bump for any Google Fi users: Google is offering installment payments for the newly released Nexus phones.

  13. I'm willing to bet shipments will occur mid Oct. Google tends to over-estimate how long the wait is. I remember when I ordered the 5 (2013), it shipped like 2 weeks before it actually said it would.

Yep my Nexus 5 also shipped a week or two early. My friend had the same experience with his Nexus 6 last year.
