  1. The Snapdragon 808 is only capable of 2xCA, correct?  Like so many others, I am either buying this phone or the Nexus 5X. Since both phones are apparently starting at $399 and ship with essentially pure Android, the only other big selling point for me to differentiate between the two would be if one were to support 3XCA and the other were not.  I'm hoping the Nexus 5X does.  We shall see.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7925/qualcomms-snapdragon-808810-20nm-highend-64bit-socs-with-lte-category-67-support-in-2015

Both SoCs have a MDM9x35 derived LTE Category 6/7 modem. The SoCs feature essentially the same modem core as a 9x35 discrete modem, but with one exception: Qualcomm enabled support for 3 carrier aggregation LTE (up from 2). The discrete 9x35 modem implementation can aggregate up to two 20MHz LTE carriers in order to reach Cat 6 LTE's 300Mbps peak download rate. The 808/810, on the other hand, can combine up to three 20MHz LTE carriers (although you'll likely see 3x CA used with narrower channels, e.g. 20MHz + 5MHz + 5MHz or 20MHz + 10MHz + 10MHz).

Enabling 3x LTE CA requires two RF transceiver front ends: Qualcomm's WTR3925 and WTR3905. The WTR3925 is a single chip, 2x CA RF transceiver and you need the WTR3905 to add support for combining another carrier.

So it looks like hardware wise it is possible (at the cost of an additional transceiver) on both the 808 and 810 but someone more in tune with hardware in this area than me might have a better answer as to why or why not it is likely.  As far as I know only some places (South Korea) have deployed 3x CA. My RF experience is @5.7-MMW so this isn't something I actively follow. Hopefully someone else can chime in about 3x CA plans that they know of.

  2. http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-nexus-5x-release-price-leak-639306/

Perhaps the most important detail we gleaned from our source is the price of the Nexus 5X: the device will be affordable, but not as affordable as the original Nexus 5. The Nexus 5X will cost $50 more than the Nexus 5, according to our source. That means we can expect a starting point of $399 for the 16GB model and $449 for the 32GB model, assuming Google has decided to stick with 16GB for the base version.

So, same price as the Moto X Pure with a smaller size.

Pros for the Nexus 5x:  fingerprint reader, possibly better battery, USB-C, wireless charging

Cons for the Nexus 5x: No expandable storage, Possibly worse Camera, lower resolution screen

This will be a hard choice. I will wait for the reviews for the Nexus 5x to come out but the early reviews for the Moto seem quite positive. $400 feels like too much for 16GB with no expandable storage. I was hoping to spend around $400 for the 32 GB model..

  3. Wow I really Hope they are right and the promo doesn't expire!

Are you sure that there's just 2gb per line? Anyone can confirm? I've never gotten close to going over 26gb anyway so it's not a big deal...

If only 2gb/line you'd think they'd fix the graph by now ( one year later )

I am 100% certain this is just an error on the Sprint website. Both my bill and the "my sprint->account" call it 2GB per line promo. I've also asked both chat and phone reps and they confirmed it is a display bug on the website and the correct amount is stated on the bills.

  4. Quick question... as I mentioned on another thread, I have a family share plan with 20 gb and have the promotion that added another 20 gb (Was supposed to be 2gb per line) that adds up to a total of 40 gb. My understanding is that the additional 20 gb was a promotion that is supposed to go away? Anyone know when those additional gbs are due to go away?

To answer this: The true amount of data remains 20 GB + the 2 GB per line promo. Your actual bill will state the correct amount and the Sprint website for some reason still shows 40 GB for some people (myself included)

Edit: just did Sprint chat and called in:

Megan: Thank you for your patience, I'll have the information shortly. Megan: From what I see, there is no set end date unless a plan change is done.

  5. They're likely trying to cut costs to keep a healthy profit ratio.  I'm actually quite disappointed they've infested my current handset with advertisements.  (Luckily I have root so it's not an issue.)  But others that aren't tech savvy now have ads on their homescreens and pulldown bars!

The issue is one of market perception: Even SAMSUNG has problems with people who try and compare Snapdragon vs exynos chips, etc. I hate to say it but if HTC wants to bring itself back into revelancy it has to make a comparably great device to the current flagships and it has a smallish window before the SD820 are put into the next gen phones to capitalize on perceived quality before being relegated to being considered "past gen"

Edit: What'd be amazing is if HTC released a stock android phone with great build quality and some of the features the next Nexus 5 will not have like SD card slot, better camera. Wishful thinking because they will slap some HTC carousel weirdness onto the phone but one can always hope, right?

  6. The only thing that really looks like an eye-sore, according to the leaked specs, would be the SoC.  MediaTek.  HTC will likely have a cheaper phone, but the performance and battery life of MediaTek processors often lack compared to its competitors.  But if priced correctly, it may be a contender.

Agreed. To echo a reddit user here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3j857c/rumor_htc_to_announce_new_phone_on_sept_6th/

If they put the Mediatek chip in here they might as well file bankruptcy right now

  7. First they came for the Abusers, Hackers and VPN users, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not an Abuser, Hacker or VPN user.

Then they came for the 100GB+ Users, and I did not speak out—

    Because I was not a 100GB+ User.

Then they came to prioritize traffic for people using 20GB, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not using 20GB each month.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

  8. It's happening (maybe).

    http://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/3j8qgd/looks_like_tmobile_is_starting_to_throttle/

Please read the link because the short title does not give the whole story.

Also, here's the first known instance of the tethering crack down

    http://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/3j8nm1/just_received_this_message_from_tmobile_so_much/

Geez, I thought the warnings would go out weeks/months from now. Yes, this is similar to the problem my friends had and actually a dispute my company had with AT&T. VPNs were giving what we considered false positives of tethering but we require VPNs for a LOT of our network use on phones so the very real data usage was being masked and therefore popping up on whatever stupid system they use to try and detect this. AT&T backed down because we are owned by a fairly large corporation but I just chatted with one of our IT guys about this over lunch. Talk about topical.

  9. This is just a PR stunt by the Joker that runs Tmobile. His precious network is slowing down and getting congested by the minute (of course we knew that because we discussed it many times). He is using a, fake number of of 2TB just like Robert mentioned to go after everyone one that tether over 7gbs.

The magenta trolls see this guy as the hero against the wireless greedy companies, but when in reality he is just a disguise. Tmobile is just like any carrier, they want to squeeze as much money they can from you.

These PR stunts are basically laying the ground work to introduce overages. His excuse will be we tried everything to prevent the data abusers, we tried a 20gbs hard cap on congested sites, and we tried to kick out the people tethering over 2 TB.

Hmmmm I never thought about it like that. Introducing overages...tmobile will catch all kinds of hell from people. They would have to just like you said mask it up and make it sound pretty.

Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

I think it is more likely they will use this line of thought to target "network abusers" with no published scale of what level of usage "abuse" is. I expect they will accuse people who use over XX-XXXGB/mo of illegal tethering/APN editing and shut down their service or demand they use less.

I had friends on AT&T unlimited go through the same deal and I wouldn't be very surprised if we see posts on howard forums and elsewhere in the not too distant future going "I received a warning from T-Mobile for using too much data, HALP!?"

  10. Seriously. How is 7 gb of mobile hotspot not enough. I would love to have maybe even 3, or 5. Just for emergency situations. But that probably won't ever be offered to me until I get off this legacy plan. But whatever.

2 terabytes its a ridiculous amount of data. When I had Comcast I would monitor my internet usage. At most we would use around 300 gb a month. That is between every single device in the house being on wifi, movies, hulu, netflix, youtube, and web browsing, and all guests using wifi as well. I will not believe that anybody approaching that much is only using their smart phone to watch netflix. No, they are tethering illegally, and there is no doubt about it. Hell. We binge watched all of Dexter for about a month straight and still didn't even reach that much.

It all depends on what you watch, really. Watching certain things like Twitch.tv or HBOGo streaming are not nearly as efficient as Netflix is. Even watching very high quality Youtube videos can draw a ton of data. My home internet can use a terabyte between my wife and I. Twitch.tv seems to be the worst offender based on what I have seen. Watching for 1 hour a day can easily pull multiple gigs if I watch a tournament with 2 streams for example. I also pulled over almost 2 TB when I had to reinstall my steam library./edit: This is even easier as my home computer supports 4k resolution streaming.

To get above 1 TB I would somewhat agree with anyone who says that you need to be torrenting or running a server even a PLEX for family churns data fast. The exception would be a college house where among 5 guys we easily hit 2 TB even years ago.

  11. I don't understand why they'd add all of this SD card support in Marshmallow but not include an SD slot on their pure Android phone!!!  Once again I have to settle with these compromises.  Hopefully these leaks are just wrong, but they sound very believable.

Maybe the rumored larger HUAIWEIEIEI phone will have SD support?

  12. So my only question here is: If the worst offender is the 2 TB guy (who obviously is a total asshole) what are the other 3000 offenders at? 1.5 TB? 1 TB? 500 GB? What is the metric they are using here? We saw the same idea out of AT&T and a lot of people I would consider not "abusers" @40-100 GB+ got caught up in throttling and stuff.

If people are breaking the TOS by spoofing tethering traffic, etc then why bother even making this bombastic press release decrying hackers and data abusers? Just kick them off and or block their service.

  13. Arggh 2700.  It's at least better than 2300, but why can't it just be in the 3000s?

I mean, it is 400mAh better than the current Nexus 5 and while it is less than the LG G4 (3000mAh) the screen resolution is also lower so it should see comparable battery life.

I do wish that Google would offer 32/64GB capacities rather than 16/32. I actually use the larger storage  :(

  14. I have to say I don't have any more faith in Marcelo.

Maybe he just hasn't had time to wait in line for 3 hours for Franklin's BBQ here in Austin

    //Edit:

    ON A NON BBQ NOTE:

I am super excited for Sprint's future. I think there is considerable risk going forward with how the whole lease debt offloading and the scheme for densification in general BUT at least where I am Sprint has rapidly turned the corner and surpassed even my expectations.

Super hopeful for the next Nexus 5 to have CA and the next iPhone too so my family can really take advantage of the new and improved network.
