I’m tracking a lot of activity in El Paso..... currently sprint is going the mini macro route on about 95% of site upgrades. I’ve been noticing some stuff that I wanted to mention. On one site sprint added full build to the site but choose to turn on mini Marco.... another area that I’m tracking sprint added a small cell on the same property that they have a tower on ( the small cell went on a boost mobile store ) could this mean a possible tower being decommissioned or they just added the small cell until they can upgrade the site
The red spot is the tower the red circle is the small cell....

I would assume them decommissioning that tower would take a blow to coverage in that area and a waste of money since they did a full build out on that tower as well. So I would guess it's Sprint just beefing up the network in that area. I would keep an eye on that location for sure. Its great that you're seeing a lot of activity going on in El Paso!

Sprint is on the come up. Still some work to do but they are indeed starting to give AT&T a run for their money. I can only image the gains that will show with this 6-8 billion that is going towards the network this year.

Sensorly, Rootmetrics and Cellmapper are all great.
I'm on iOS and in my exp, Sensorly has worked best for me. All those you listed are great options.

Agreed. I've started back at it myself. Good idea.
Thanks! I thought that this would be a great time to start back up again and bring back more life to this forum like the old days lol.

As of recently, there has been a huge uptick of work being done in many markets. It seems as though Sprint is putting the pedal to the metal with the network. I do miss the high activity with posts, mapping screenshots and etc that was going on in here during 2013 -2015. Anyways, with all the work that is currently being done, I think its a good time for us all to start mapping again where we discover new and or improved coverage.

Yeah, assuming Sprint has the Capex available and the equipment is available in sufficient supply, these Network improvements should happen quite rapidly because they’ll be sidestepping the permit process.
Cool! One can only hope things are ready to go and put into the wild. This is their make or break year.

It’s awesome! I would love to see a partnership with RCN next! It would definitely help out here in DC! I don’t see Comcast going for it given its partnership with Verizon.
That's true. So Since Sprint has Partnerships with Altice and Cox, They should really be hitting the running with massive network changes this year that will be noticeable. Too, they would also be dodging alot of permits too correct?

This is good. So Sprint teaming up with other companies is going to be their way of speeding up getting the network together this year it seems like?

Hopefully Sprint can brag about upgrades in Minneapolis, too.
With how they are giving priority to the download over the upload, let’s just hope this doesn’t blow up in their face at sporting events.

i have mixed feelings about what I am saying but I think 600 is waaaaaay overrated. Yes it helps with coverage but it is clear the future is automated. Cars, refrigerators, phones, tablets Alexa and so forth. For this massive amount of data that will only continue to grow where does 600 fit if it has capacity setbacks? With cable in the mix the future will be small cell located at every street light/corner.
I think Tmo mistake may have been to purchase the 600, they are clearly going for coverage to get themselves the same credibility as att/vzw.
This may be a long term mistake as everyone is moving up. Or it may work out for them long term, short term I don’t see any benefit of 600 with everyone racing to get 5g out. Maybe I am missing something
For the the jury is still out on 600. T-mobile has a serious obsession with Verizon. They may get close to the coverage that they have but where T-Mobile still fails at is their reliability which I have yet to understand as to why at this point.
Something in me feels like when 5G starts to roll around, I think think Sprint will be one of the carriers that’s going to shine and will be one if not the fastest. I feel as though For them to deploy 5G, they will have an easier ride since their 2.5 is suited for it. No one is from the media, other carriers or their subs will admit to this but Sprint is definitely the carrier to watch for going into 5G.

I have seen permits in my city 3 weeks straight for b41 equipment when there was no permits for over 18 months so if that's just here I think this year is going to be a good year to watch Sprint. What I don't understand is at the last conference they said they waited so long to build out 2.5 is so they wouldn't have to go back to towers but then they are deploying thousands of mini macros that are not future proof(2xCA and no 4x4 Mimo)that means you have to go back eventually and replace with full builds. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Sounds like they want to get the network where it can complete and then they’ll go back and make the changes. Gain trust and then go back and upgrade. It’s sorta like what tmobile is doing. Some b12 only areas they will go back to add other bands at a later time. Because they have the trust of their customers, they can do that.

I would have loved to see VoLTE talk and the future of mini macros since 4x4 mimo cant be done on them and whole cities are starting to see only this equipment.
Agreed. All I know with the constant and repeated big talk about what they plan to do to the network this year. I hope they deliver or exceed.

Ha, I guess I heard a rebroadcast...
It seems like it was just a rehash of what they’ve been saying for 2018. Just another person saying it.

From today’s discussion with T-Mobile’s CFO:
https://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/t-mobile-execs-lament-failure-sprint-merger-but-you-never-say-never“This team was highly convicted that we had a unique opportunity for value creation with the Sprint deal,” said T-Mobile CFO Braxton Carter. “Very conservatively, there were at least $37 billion of hard synergy [in the now-collapsed deal]. Mostly in the network. You know, Neville [Ray, T-Mobile’s CTO] and his team for 4-5 months built the most detailed Newco [combined T-Mobile and Sprint] network model—it was a thing of beauty. … But it wasn’t meant to be.”
Added Carter: “Could something happen in the future? You never say never.”
————
I wonder what that network model looked like.
AND“It’s a shame it didn’t happen,” he said, noting that T-Mobile’s leadership team formed tight relationships with their counterparts at Sprint during months of negotiations between the two companies. Indeed, he said he plans to go fishing with Sprint’s outgoing CFO Tarek Robbiati in New Zealand sometime this year.
However, Carter said that the value of a potential merger between Sprint and T-Mobile is going to decline as Sprint continues to invest in improving its network. “Some of those synergies will dissipate,” Carter said.
———— Interesting how Sprint’s continued network investment would negatively impact synergies for a merger. Was CapEx slowed down for this reason?
Quite possible yes in hopes that a merger between the two would take place. That is indeed interesting that Carter did say that. It was like he was almost saying that as Sprints network gets stronger, they really wouldn’t need anyone else let alone another carrier to merge with. They have the tools to go it alone, the ability branch off into different areas outside of cellular with their Spectrum and will be more than fine.
I did see that in the article there was a mention that an M&A is still an option for T-Mobile. Realistically, couldn’t T-Mobile go it alone?

Name change can't happen until fully true VOLTE cause I have heard some say they would come back and try if they had that. Sprint needs at least at&t coverage before a name change. If they got att coverage they could pass then on LTE.

100% agree. Match AT&T coverage and let your 2.5 shine and Sprint can really make and shake some moves then and get the reception they are looking for.

You are right. I got laughed at by a family member when I say the name Sprint. He said he was going to try them out until other people told him about all the horror stories.

I got the same by my friend one time. One day that same friend and I were waiting in line for entry into this concert and she couldn't even pull up her social media or webpages. Where the venue is located, there are also a lot of bars and stuff around that people go to on the weekend. Now my data service was humming along with no issues. So I made it a point and pulled up the same thing she was trying to so she could see it. I then made a sly remark and said " I can turn on my hotspot for you since my service is working." So she ended using Sprint service while in line, The same service she laughed at. I thought it was pretty funny. Too, I'm in a pretty good market that Sprint can stand its own.
I would welcome a name change but I too have to think, how much of a difference would it make? People will still see it as Sprint. I think the network will need to be extremely together first and is actually competing with the other 3 from all aspects before a name change takes place.

His departure from Altice was also tied to the heavy debt they took on during his acquisition spree, but another thing he accomplished was 'stabilizing' ALU before selling it to Nokia. That is a bit more worrisome for me.
Hmmm this guy doesn't sound like too much of a winner. The stock is down to $5.57 from the news.

Pretty good review but more so the positive things said about Sprint service in Manhattan. Granted, these are the same results that were posted on twitter last week. We just need to see more of these type of reviews on devices when using a Sprint model in 2018.

Now we just need a article written on his experience.

Nope because the news came from Milan Milanovic who, as far as I know, actually works for Ookla. Sprint's average speed climbed to 23.9 Mbps from 14.5Mbps last November.
Ok I see. I just searched him on twitter and found this in the mentions

Not that we’ve seen yet.
Ok so as of now the whole Sprint over taking AT&T in download speed can be takin with a grain of salt to some extend.

No, they already surpassed Att, they are neck and neck with TMO and V.
Is there an updated chart with the updated numbers for all 4 carriers?

I m curious as to what sprint will do when verizon shuts off cdma all together
I think that Sprint should start to move away from all the extended/native roaming that they currently have and just build out the network. It'll save them some money. It's ok to have it but looking at their map, they have a lot of roaming coverage.

Really doesn't matter what he thinks we don't need, he's not going to be the CEO of Sprint when that time comes.
