  1. Wow...how did I miss this thread tonight???

Just to clarify, the GNex article stated that the first LTE devices will be shipped from OEM's with LTE turned off. It can be turned on by the customer with the toggle. Much like WiMax. It is not locked out.

In June or July there will be OTA's that will introduce LTE self discoverability to devices. This setting will allow your device to intermittently turn on LTE itself and look for LTE and then turn itself off if it can't find it, thus saving your battery over just staying in LTE mode.

  2. I have confirmed it is the NV conversion that is causing major headaches from Chicago west. I suspect we will see lots more issues as other towns convert.

However' date=' I suspect it will be just the 3G NV radios that cause the issues now. I know they have lit up 4G NV towers here with no 3G NV radios and we have no problems. I can check Chicago tomorrow again, but I do believe they are firing up 3G towers.

    Robert, can you confirm?[/quote']

I think you're right. It only seems to be in markets where 3G NV sites have gone live and not in the markets where only 4G LTE has gone live. They are rapidly firing up on Chicago. And the I-110 corridor in LA too. Sounds like NV 3G deployment is the culprit. I will keep my eyes open to see if I come across specifics about what is at play.

  3. Another thing that provides a little validity to the accuracy are the Upload speeds. We know that Clearwire limits their WiMax upload speeds to 1.5Mbps. I can occasionally get it up to 1.6Mbps, but never 1.7Mbps. If that had said something like 2.0Mbps, or 2.5Mbps, then we know there was a significant problem with these results. Also, that EVDO upload speed also is not out of whack.

  4. .

This is more than twice what either the Speedtest or FCC app measured. Anyone know why?

I have talked with Kevin at RootMetrics about this in the past. RootMetrics uses the same servers for the most part that Speedtest does, but it searches out the best server it can locate before it starts running the test. It's doing that while it is running the signal portion of the test. When it settles on the best server, it then starts speed testing it.

I think RootMetrics is a more reliable speed tester in my opinion. The results are accurate. It is sending files to the remote server, and this is the speed actually observed in the transfer. If you were streaming video from that same server, it would be moving at the indicated speed in RootMetrics.

SpeedTest app (and the FCC app is also made by Ookla too) are a little too user dependent in choosing a server. Often, people are not using the best server. And they are just oblivious to it. Typically, people will choose the same server they use at home. Which is never a good idea, because wireless backhaul is likely routing its destination to the internet differently every time. And it will likely hit the internet a very long ways away from where their home and work ISP's do.

That's why I'm always recommending that people who use SpeedTest to use several different servers when they get a really slow speed result. With apps like SpeedTest, FCC, and even RootMetrics it's not the fast results that are suspect. It's the slow ones. It can't register faster than the connection it actually has to the server on the other end.

Every time I can think of where I had a fast RootMetrics speed, I was able to recreate it on SpeedTest if I kept hunting around on different servers...eventually.

  5. oh now you tell us. LOL

Still I think its odd they wouldn't have the SIM ID listed on the sticker...no?

In the docs I have seen it just has very vague SIM references. I didn't feel comfortable actually going public with the info, because I didn't know if it was a virtual SIM, an unremovable SIM card, etc. I just really didn't have much info, and I didn't want to appear like an idiot. However, I have mentioned it around here when relevant to conversations and in some of our chats.

  6. Uh oh...Korey over at xda just mentioned the device has a Sina card for lte...the young kid is a sprint tech who does briefmobile.com too...

Said he's got an article on it coming soon.

He's been preaching simless lte from the get go...said its built in and only accessible VIA teardown...though still I'm surprised the number isn't listed on the sticker that lists your imei and sn...

I've been seeing SIM references in lab docs for awhile. :)

  7. got word today from someone that SVDO is NOT being pursued anymore as its too costly and battery consuming...VoLTE, LTE Advanced, 1x advanced, HD Voice, and so on are whats slated with Do-Advanced being discussed still last he herd...

take it for what its worth but this guy hasn't led me wrong before...hes a lil more removed from Sprint now than before so to say but still in the loop tech wise some considering who he works for supplies a component to device OEM's...

imho SVDO is nothing to get all ruffled over really...and in due time with VoLTE they can do SVLTE and get the same thing in a sense from what i've briefly read...

SVLTE is where the future is at. Once we all are on LTE, who cares about simultaneous 3G and voice?

You people are terrible. I am reporting all of you to Cellphone Protective Services.

  9. Also' date=' I like to fidget with the kickstand. I'm glad it's still there. Click. Snap. Click. Snap.[/quote']

That was one of the things i missed most when i moved to the E4GT. I too am a fidgeter. I sometimes will pick up my wife or sons Evo just to dork with the kickstand.

  10. Does this mean that all of these towers are activated for general use' date=' or are towers still limited to internal testing shown on the map?[/quote']

The ones shown on our maps are past the testing stage and are active and carrying commercial traffic now. The 4G LTE ones, of course, have virtually no traffic since there are no LTE devices out there currently.
