Shentel, a sprint affiliate, reported their earnings this morning. No real detail in their press release about their progress upgrading to NV but hopefully there's more info on their conference call. That's scheduled for 2pm EDT.

Here's the release:

For those that don't know, Shentel operates the towers in rural parts of western Virginia, West Virginia and MD. They sell service under the Sprint brand. In their previous earnings call they had stated that they would be upgrading all of their towers to NV starting this year. Hopefully there are some progress updates.

Thanks for the posting. In the past, it's been the conference call where the details have come. :tu:

Quick notes:

20% of all new activations = iPhone

51% of all new iPhones in our service area were sold in Shentel-controlled channels.

6.8% of the postpaid base have an iphone

40% own iphone 4, 60% iphone 4s

total network vision spend in 2012 = 60 million

"Work has progressed nicely over the past few months. we still plan to complete 274 of our 510 sites this year. The upgrades of our wireless switch will be completed in the next few weeks. We've plans to install our first Network Vision base station later this month. We have approximately 100 sites scheduled to be completed by the end of July or early August. We still expect to launch initial 4G LTE service in the third quarter although we will be starting to sell LTE phones as soon as they are available."

Question about biggest factors about network vision-

Answer: Probably are three. One is, we've got to be able to get fiber or microwave to every one of the sites. We are very optimistic that we are going to be able to do that, but we are relying on third parties for some of those sites. So, those could put us at risk. Second is, we've had some very good success in talking with the various tower owners and working through the negotiations on those, obviously if those negotiations continue to go well, that could have an impact. And third is the coordination with Alcatel-Lucent, obviously they are doing a huge project with Sprint at the same time. At this point, we do feel like we are getting the proper amount of attention, but that's something we continue to monitor.

Nothing else worth mentioning

I'd just like to add that they cover a pretty large area of south-central PA as well.

Interesting that they're going to be starting NV this month. Wonder if I'll get any NV love here before I move back to Corporateland (specifically, pretty much the bottom of the list) in August.

    • Was in Red Hook again and I swear there are more Link5G sites as there are Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T small cells combined in the entire neighborhood. It seemed like every other street I turned down had one installed. Hopefully carriers will start hopping on them soon. Seems like a lot of effort to go through for no one to use them.  — — — — — T-Mobile converted the Sprint site on top of NYU Langone Brooklyn in Sunset Park. I first mapped one sector of it back in November 2023 but I thought it was a small cell so I never pinned it but I ran into another sector today which caught me off guard. I'm unable to find a permit for the conversion so it's definitely a surprise. There's another T-Mobile site 1 block away that T-Mobile initially installed back in 2019 so I'm kinda surprised they're keeping both considering the Sprint conversion is on a much taller building and coule potentially provide much better coverage to the entire area.  — — — — — The old permit expired for this site without any work being done but a new permit was just approved a few days ago for a T-Mobile site at this address. Description mentions 3 antennas with 2 RRUs per sector. My guess is they're doing something similar to what they did at 360 Furman St in Brooklyn where they broadcast Band 2/66 and n25/41 from one antenna. It's a bit of a downgrade considering the site it's replacing was a full build with Ericsson 6449s.
    • Still not seeing any ULS postings for pending T-Mobile UScellular merger in Dane county Wisconsin.
    • Came across another Crown Castle Solutions multi-tenant oDAS node in Brooklyn. Located at 40.7002286, -73.9612666. Nothing on T-Mobile or AT&T so I'm assuming these are all Verizon nodes that Crown Castle is anticipating another carrier will hop on down the line.
