Roaming question?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have a Sprint Iphone5 which I THOUGHT would have the ability to roam on Verizon's network when I'm not inside Sprints native coverage. Occasionally I travel to my friends hoods in Salem NY 12865 & another friends hood Arlington VT 05250. Both of these areas have native Verizon coverage, no Sprint. In the past I have been able to visit both neighborhoods with my old Sanyo Sprint handset and the phone would switch to digital roaming (Verizon) no issues. I spent some time in both of these areas this past weekend with my Sprint Iphone5 and I had no service the entire time. I don't understand this because my friends who have Verizon phones had full signal strength and my phone didn't register Extended Network at all. My current PRL is 31100. Any ideas guys? I always just figured that where there was a Sprint or Verizon tower I'd be covered... Guess not. Any Info is greatly appreciated! Thanks , Jim

If I remember right that odd 31100 or whatever prl did not have any roaming in it. It is more like a default prl that the device comes with used for provisioning only. It should update to the 51095 for the iphone5 which has 1x vzw roaming in most areas where available.

I forgot to add in my post that yes I do have roaming enabled, my bad for not clarifying that. Thank you. Digiblur... I think I Love you! I was really hoping you would chime in. Much respect, I've read online that you are THE MAN for this so THANK YOU for the info. I suspected 31100 was some generic PRL because I JUST had my phone swapped for a power button issue. My sis has same phone but lives in AZ and SHE HAS PRL 51095. Digiblur you TOTALLY ROCK I hope I can repay you for your help. I was so bummed thinking I was stuck with that PRL. Now I just have to figure how to update it. Going to call Sprint tech support. Thanks SO VERY MUCH!

Glad to help out ;) No repayment is necessary to me at all. I do recommend throwing a few dollars towards the server/hosting costs for S4GRU as we wouldn't have a place like this to hang out and share information like this. It's easy plus you get access to a TON of information that you won't find anywhere else.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
