Kindle Fire HD

Anyone follow the press release? What do you guys think of the new Kindle Fire HD?

$299 for the 8.9" model is a pretty nice price point. If I could root that and throw some JB goodness on there I might consider it. $300 seems like it could be the next price step for a Nexus 10

I cannot help but see the Nexus 7 in my hands giving me the evil eye. Why is that?

To avoid the jealously our Nexus 7s might present, we may be forced to pick up the 8.9in version?

Really interested in picking this up. Kinda sucks though that you'll have to wait til late-November to get.

This would make it easy to keep my textbooks on me without the weight.

That, combined with my AmazonStudent membership that includes Prime and all it's content, and the screen size, this is something that would work for me perfectly(without any need for rooting/flashing).

They are going directly at the iPad throat. 4G LTE, with a $50 plan for 250MB per month for a year (yes, I know 250MB is not much data, but for about $4 per month, it is really cheap for a backup plan to wifi when away from home)

Too bad it runs on AT&T for data though. Maybe they will use Sprint, it says it supports 10 bands.

People will look at me aslant for doing it, but I'll probably get the LTE version. That way I'll have devices capable of running on all four major 4G networks (I'll get a T-Mobile LTE device when those come out) without paying a ton per month for data on the AT&T side.

I'm incredibly curious to see what exactly Amazon means by "10 band modem". If they're counting bands in the strict sense (as in, not counting GSM 850 as one band and HSPA 850 as another)...and they aren't counting the dual-band WiFi in as two of the ten, three bands are left over when you overlap quad-band GSM, low-block 700+AWS LTE and HSPA that includes 2100MHz (a common foreign frequency). That leaves high-C 700 (Verizon), SMR and 2500/2600 if you just consider US frequencies.

On the other hand, if they're counting each band+technology combination as a 'band" then it's probably quad-band GSM, quad-band HSPA (850/900/1900/2100) and low-700 + AWS LTE, similar to what the iPad 3rd gen AT&T model has. So, significantly less interesting :P

Extremely tempted to get the 8.9 WiFi only version..might just pull the trigger and forget I did it. That way I get a nice surprise at the end of November..

Do the ads on the lock screen for all the Kindle Fire HD models turn anyone off?

I have an ad-supported Touch, and they do not bother me.

I keep the wireless off to save battery, connecting about every 6-8 weeks to get new books. When I connect it updates the ads but after 3-4 weeks of being offline the ads expire and don't show anymore. The lock screen becomes generic with a small message saying to turn on wifi to download the latest special offers. Built in ad-blocker!

Either way, if they did bother me I can at any time pay the upgrade fee ($30, or whatever the price difference was) to take the ads off my Kindle. Since they only show up on the lock screen and a banner on the main menu, I rarely notice them. So far they've always been ads for products sold by Amazon (new books, clothes, etc).

Yeah, I didn't think it would be that big of a deal. I guess thats how they can offer the Kindle Fire HDs at such a low price, because the ads are stuck on the lock screen. Which ins't bad, my lock screen is normally up for all about 5 secs before I unlock it or turn the screen off.
