  1. I REALLY wish they would install at least eCSFB at RDU. Just driving by the airport on 540 drops you from an excellent band 25 signal straight to 3G. And then it takes almost my entire ride to work struggling with streaming radio on 3G before the LTE scan timer kicks in and puts me back on LTE.

My commute takes me this way twice a day and toggling airplane mode right there is getting to be a pain

You would think they would want every band possible at the airport for travelers, hell it was one of the first sites in the area with WiMAX back in the day and I often get some of the best and fastest signals at other airports around the country, and here RDU is after all this time still on legacy 3G equipment.

  2. Anyone hear any talk of Band 4 getting activated for the N5 following the T-Mobile merger?

By the time any merger closes, if it even happens, and plans and such are made, the Nexus 5 will be but a distant memory. We're talking 2+ years in the future.

  3. LOL trying to force my hand, are you? ;) They just activated that feature for me yesterday; this morning I started setting it up for my small group of beta testers, but until I start playing with it some more, I'm not sure how it works. It looks like access control will be through Google Groups; this means I either have to invite each person individually by e-mail address, or keep it open it to the public. I'd prefer to spend what little free time I have to devote to SignalCheck spent adding more features instead of tackling administrative overhead.

That being said, I have already given some thought as to how to use this to hook up S4GRU Premier Sponsors. S4GRU is probably my biggest userbase, and I'd love to try and 'throw a bone' to those who have helped out this site the most. I'd be most willing to go this route, but I need to figure out the logistics first.

I announce new versions here on S4GRU first, usually immediately after I finish uploading it to Google Play. Also, Pro users get updates a few days in advance of Lite users. I don't want to release updates too often and annoy people, but at the same time, when I have a few useful things ready to go, I update the app. I wish I could say that I have a whole pile of awesome features that I'm holding back from you guys, but I promise, whatever I have working is in the latest release of the app!

    Mike,

Would it be possible to add the current LTE band to the notification bar as an option? Maybe a big 25,26, or 41 next to the current notification when LTE is connected? Or even changing the current "LTE/ -XX" dBm notification to "LTE41/-XX"

    dBm or something like that?

Also, are b26 and b41 alerts an option like our current 1x800 alerts?

  4. If your coming from .23, I don't think you would be unhappy. I think most are upset coming from .15, Once B26 is more prevalent in your market those concerns are going to disappear.

    Ding Ding Ding.

.15 was great, but a lot of people did not use it due to eCSFB issues. But those that did use it are likely disappointed with .13

Those that were on .23, like myself, and upgraded to .13, see about the same performance on b25 and now have the addition of b41. I've had suuuuper smooth handoffs to b41 and back in areas I did not know it existed, there is no b26 in my area to test yet, though.

    I'm happy.

  5. Connected to Band 41 for the first time today on an old WiMax site. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the speed or range, probably a half mile and 11.5 down, 1.2 up with full bars. Could be that this is an old site and was never configured properly or never got good backhaul, but honestly the Band 25 over a mile away would've been better.

  6. Looks like MX Player is another 4.4.3 casualty.

MX Player always does this, they have a hard-coded list of strings of android versions that they support, and it always takes them weeks to add the new one. Dumbest system ever.

  7. With a new sim card im still getting the data drop on 3g.  It happens for a split second and come back.  My s4 that i was on for a week didn't do it once!  Never seen an important update take so long to roll out.  I love the design of the nexus 5.  Would it be caused from esfb issue?  I dont know how to check to see if its that.

now that i swapped phone online i got the msl number sent email now to test.

It is likely dropping 3G to scan for LTE. Put it in 3G only mode and see if you still get the dropouts. This will likely not be fixed with the update as the single-path radio is physically unable to scan for LTE while keeping a 3G signal.

  8. Alright.  I did that and then I forced it to LTE only.  It didn't find a signal (there is LTE here in this location).  So I toggled airplane mode and for a brief flash of a fraction of a second, it indicated a strong LTE signal (full bars) before immediately falling back to a moderate 3G signal.  So I toggled it again.  Same thing.  Brief flash of LTE and then back to 3G (with really decent speeds on 3G, mind you).

If you forced LTE Only it should not have fallen back to 3G, even after an airplane toggle. If it lost LTE signal it would show no bars at all. That doesn't make sense. Sure you enabled LTE only in the right place?

  9. I have and use Google Voice with my Sprint Service. I love it! I just worry that sometime though I miss calls on my cell that ring my other lines. Anyone else experiencing that issue as well?

I have missed call email alerts turned on. That way in the rare case my phone does not ring (I'd say 1-2% of the time) I instantly get an email on my phone that I had a missed call and I can call the person back.

  10. lol no one in customer service would know anything about this update. Most of them barely know what "spark" is.

Their job is "thank you for your concern, I will do everything I can to get this to the right people so your voice is heard" (and then throws it in the trash) and move on to the next caller.

The update will probably be in 4.4.3, if not there is probably some problem holding it up and it may never come. If so, and if spark is that important to you in your area, just sell the N5 and grab a new phone that is spark enabled out of the box. That easy.

  11. Why not email dan@sprint anyways expressing our shared concerns over the lack of a spark update? I'm starting to wonder if they may have thought the hardware could handle spark technology but upon further development they have run into some big challenges in getting the radios working fully with spark. The G2 does not have the same number of bands as the nexus 5, if I am right. So maybe they are genuinely struggling to make the hardware specific to the nexus 5 do spark? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

What would make you think that? When the last N5 update (4.4.2) was released, Spark was virtually non-existent in all markets. 4.4.3 will be the first update that Spark support COULD be included in since Spark has become more widespread across the country.

Google would never release an update just for Spark, so it had to wait until the next update to be included. Now, if Spark support is not included in 4.4.3 then you have a case a could be right, but right now you have no reason to think that. It's not like Google has released update after update past Q1 2014 (the time frame given for when the N5 would probably get a Spark update) where Spark wasn't included, 4.4.3 will be the FIRST update since then.

  12. We just had a lot more acceptances of 3G upgrades on existing 4G towers and Legacy towers in Raleigh.  Looks like they are trying to resolve the circuit switch fallback issue by getting all the 3G upgrades out of the way.  Anyone have a Nexus 5 or other triband device that is picking up 4G now?

No, No 4G yet. If you look at Charlotte, they didnt flip the "eCSFB fix" switch until all but 2 towers (yes two) were upgraded with at least 3G. So I'm betting we still have a little while. Great to see so much progress in Raleigh though, they are definitely trying the last week or so, and im betting it's a primary focus for them now. I've seen lots of tower climbers all down 40 and in RTP this past week.

As soon as you hit Wilson traveling east though, the Nexus 5 switches to LTE and behaves normally, picking up LTE where available, all the way to the coast.

  13. Indeed. I'm not a big fan of the android os. I'm giving it 9 months to see Sprint's sense of urgency in Chicago. I need to see LTE 800 rapidly deployed and to see if it fixes any issues with data speeds, or if I'll even be able to use it. I hope it doesn't end up being like 1x800 voice on the iPhone where it's only used when there is 0 pcs signal. I also want to see them not put the USCC spectrum on the back burner and release some kind of statement like: "USCC spectrum will be implemented within the next 2 years." See ya. I'm impressed with the grand scale of network vision, but on the other hand, I really don't care about the rest of the country. I want to see my home area working as it should. I just want LTE speeds greater than 1mbps, and right now, I only get that near my home. So yes, I'm loyal to apple, and at the moment, loyal to Sprint. We shall see where Sprint stands in Chicago in 9 months.

  14. If the previous update was completely pulled (containing the 'new' radio image) and this is meant to be the actual update, wouldnt those who never got last weeks update end up staying on the original radio?....and possibly this is what they want?

If this was the case, you would assume they would put the 4.4 radio in the 4.4.2 update to roll everyone back. But who knows.

  15. My signal seems slightly worse, by 2 or 3dBm, nothing too drastic like some people have been reporting. I'm willing to give this radio a go considering the phone holds onto LTE longer than it probably should with original radio.

Which radio? Do you have the 4.4 or 4.4.1 radio? There is no new radio in 4.4.2

  16. I just DLed the OTA on my laptop. There is a new /system/framework/telephony-common.jar

No new radio image. But maybe there was a bug between the two and the new radio needed a new telephony framework to get proper signal?

Who knows, I'll wait until it is pushed to my phone.

Anyone reporting signal strength on 4.4.2, please specify whether you are using the 4.4 radio image or the 4.4.1 radio image.

  17. Turns out there isn't any need for me to schedule for UPS to hold the package at their facility.  I just checked and it will be here tomorrow so a friend can grab it for me.

They no longer require a signature? My girlfriend couldn't even sign for my N5 (she answered the door), the UPS guy said Google had requested that only the person stated on the label could sign or it was going to be returned to sender?

  18. I just got mine in the mail today.  It's very nicely built but the charging area doesn't seem all that wide.  I would recommend sticking with less expensive products elsewhere.

A+ for build quality and design but really the magnet isn't strong enough to center it like the touchtone.  The idea of having a charger like the touchtone was appealing to me, but sadly this is not it.

    Pros:

Nice grippy/sticky surface on the bottom that has made it stick to my desk without sticking

Nice small design, easy to pick phone up off charger

Good build quality/materials - very minimalist.

Works with my slim case without issue.

    Cons:

    Narrow charging zone.

Magnet is not as strong as I would have liked.

Magnet does not guide the phone into place at all.

    Expensive.

I think the magnet issue could be because of your case? Most video reviews show that the charger will actually hold the phone while you swing the charger around and even upside down.

But any type of case will definitely diminish the strength of the magnets.

  19. After thinking about it for a bit, I wonder if this is the new single radio behavior for when it searches for LTE.  If there is only one radio path, it might need to drop the 1X/EVDO connection while it scans for LTE.  Then it reconnects when it can't find LTE... rinse and repeat.

    Ding ding ding!

  20. So, I hope I don't get yelled at for repeating a question, I did search, review and read the posts with this topic, but I didn't find an agreed-upon best practice to use.

If I missed it, I'm sorry.

    So.

    Here goes...

Wireless& Networks - Mobile Networks - Network mode - It has been 'Global' but I have had no issues.  If its not broke, should I fix (?) it to LTE???

Best setting Nexus 5 on Sprint not otherwise having issues::

    Global or LTE?

I believe it defaults back to Global after a reboot anyway. I know it does after a profile update. Global is fine and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
