So for Sprint's deployment of Massive MIMO in NYC we already know it's initially going to cover all of Manhattan. Do you think Sprint will use the 8T8R antennas that they take down to replace Clearwire equipment in the outer boroughs? That's what I'm hoping for honestly. We haven't come across many, if any, Clearwire equipment replacements in the NYC market.

There is still a ton of Clear Equipment in Manhattan. I was hoping those would be the first to get Massive MIMO. The location of Clear equipment is from the WiMax days and they most likely targeted higher usage areas with WiMax first. So thats my thought behind that.

My entire walk from 33rd st and 7th Ave to 33rd and Park Ave I never see Sprint B41 only Clear.

I have a sneaking suspicion that 256QAM is live in many places. I've been noticing some places where my speeds are improved by quite a bit. But when I go into the Engineering screen to confirm it displays ":NONE". Every time I see NONE next to MODULATION (While in a super high speed data sessions), it seems that the device is having issues displaying 256QAM.

I've also noticed that. But I also have this issue where the debug screen wont stay scrolled down even if u hold it. It just bounces to the top and I can't see modulation anymore

Interesting. I have not seen that on DAS before, but I have never been to the New York market before!

I found this but doesn't confirm if its a DAS or not. Just that LTE is live in that section. AS far as them trying to negotiate to get LTE live every where in the station it still hasn't happened. But its still only been 11 months since Craig-s said that and he mention it taking a year.

Are you certain that is a DAS? GCI would suggest a mini-macro/small cell.

Its an underground train station that opened around June 2017. I guess it could be a MM or SC but in all my experiences DAS systems show up as MM on SCP. That how it is in JFK and LGA airport.

edit: its the west end concourse of penn station.

Getting over 200Mbps from a DAS means you probably experienced 256QAM too. Given you're using a Galaxy device, you can check by going into the debug menu through the dialer, then the LTE menu, and scrolling all the way down. During an active data session, it'll tell you whether you're using 16, 64, or 256QAM.

I'll have to check. My track got called right after that speed test so I didn't have time to test. Since its only 2xCA with 64QAM I almost hit max speed. which I think is around 238Mbps if I remember correctly

As far I know, there are no MM sites broadcasting 39965(also no CA with 39965 since they have designated these for SC/MB). This is most likely either a frequency change or a new site.

Interesting this site has been here since summer of 2016 when they first started to bring the old clear small cells online. Noticed this change maybe 1 to 2 months ago.

  7. Noticed recently that the MM on a light post near me doesn't display as B41 MM anymore on SCP. According to the debug menu on my phone it isn't allowing CA or might only have 1 carrier now. This site used to have 2 carriers and they would do CA.

Were GCIs changed that is effecting SCP?

You can see just how bad the rest of the metro area is dragging down the NYC by the median speed of the last testing period being 5.8Mbps. I'm pretty sure that almost no one in this sub is seeing median or average speeds anywhere as low as 5.8Mbps. The fact that there was a 137.93% increase to 13.8Mbps in one testing period is noteworthy though. It might be due to Altice's strand mounts going up in places that have historically struggled with poor site density like Suffolk County, Long Island.

I've only spotted one strand mount cell. It has LTE UE relay for backhaul. Was hoping they were going to utilize Altice for backhaul but this is a good start. I hope to find more of these soon. Wish I had a source for locations. I would love to map these.

The NYC tests also include at least half of New Jersey and the suburbs. Those areas still need a lot of work, plus you add the Altice small cells stuff  I think better results down the road, but with this merger thing going we will never know how great the network will get if this transaction close by the first half of 2019.

I've seen a lot of work done in Nassau county and it seems like a lot of work has been done in jersey with GMOs and adding B41 either full builds or MM.

I was expecting improvement on the results but knew they weren't going to be taking first place. Hopefully 2nd half 2018 is a lot better with more B41 being deployed and the 2nd carrier of B25 being 10x10 on every site. Once that done they can do CA on B25 again.

It annoying how they can do CA on 2 5x5 B25 Carriers but can't do 10x10 + 5x5 CA

256QAM has already been spotted, but hard to confirm since it requires a super clean SNR plus an app that can confirm it, and yes, 8t8r can do 4x4MIMO with software update. It seems Nokia integrating ALU equipment has been a huge headache. I personally think it's more an issue where they have only deployed 2xCA, like any place north of 167st in Manhattan or the Bronx, they could definitely use 4x4MIMO. Most places that have 3xCA live already perform on par to the best the other carriers are offering.

I have a few sites that I can get close so SNR should be good. But from my understanding it SNR can be degraded due to congestion. I'll have to check for 256QAM. The engineering screen on the GS9 displays QAM numbers at the bottom i was assuming those were accurate. But it doesn't seem to show MIMO. I would root my GS9 and do network Guru but I can't seem to find directions to root the US version of the GS9

  11. Has anyone personally spotted 4x4 MIMO or 256QAM in NYC yet? This is one area where Sprint is falling behind. Correct me if I'm wrong but the 8t8r B41 sites can do both 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM via software update?

Sprint has been talking about massive MIMO but have yet to even go from 2x2 to 4x4 which would double the speed of B41

  12. Got the GS9 on Monday last week. Its my first Samsung phone and I'm not a fan of the launcher at all. I didn't mind the launcher on the LG g4 or v20. Also Samsung has so many apps that are the same as the google equivalent, a lot more than LG had. I've downloaded all the google apps, hidden the Samsung apps and changed the launcher and I love this Phone. The RF performance is amazing compared to every phone I've had and the last phone was the Essential PH-1 so its a huge difference. Can't wait for 4x4MIMO and 256QAM to go live on B41. In NYC sprint could really use this since all the other carriers have started using LAA and can achieve speeds over 500MBPS

  13. A lot has been happening in Long Island recently, Ive been talking about it over in the premier sections. But I wanted to share here that I believe I found my first Small Cell in the market that isn't a Mini Macro.

I wasn't able to try and locate it while driving. The only other time Ive seen this is recently in Chicago where I actually saw the small cells on light posts. This screen shot is from this location

@lilotimz any chance you have any sources?

I'm on the Sprint version, didn't want to risk missing features. But I do believe most features are working on the unlocked version, either by default or thru workarounds.

$719 is an excellent deal for this device.

With my LG V20 trade in it comes out to 419.99 / 17.50 a month for 2 years. I think thats an amazing deal since I my V20 wouldn't sell for 300 on swappa

I've been rocking my GS9+ since day 1 release, and it is without question, the most powerful radio of any device. Not to mention, the rest of the device is awesome!

Do you have the sprint or unlocked one?

Samsung is selling the sprint version  for $719 to match the unlocked price. They are also offering $300 for my V20 which is collecting dust. I just have to use there yearly upgrade financing program. I'll most likely just keep the phone for 2 year

Just not sure if the unlocked version has HPUE calling plus and some other features

Great speeds! But I do not think the essential supports 256QAM.

I think I might have to pick up a GS9 really soon, maybe even this weekend for testing in Chicago. Although I hate Samsungs UI they are they only company with a phone that support all of Sprints newest tech being deployed. I know the v30 had 4xCA but the GS9 has 5xCA. Haven't found any details for the LG G7, im a big LG fan so if it can rival the GS9 I might end up with that.
