    Thanks for the help. LG has recently announced a very similar phone (LG G7 One) that will run pure Android without LG's overlay. I'm going to wait a bit and see how the specs and availability of the new model stack up before making a decision. I think I'll like a phone better that doesn't have any bloat. To clarify a previous post, Ting is now telling me that the SIM in my Motorola Moto X is a C5 SIM and the LG G7 ThinQ takes a C7 SIM so I will have to pick up a new SIM if I buy this phone. Robert - if you get a chance after getting the phone, post up a review. Would like to hear your thoughts. DC

    One more question: Will I be able to use the nano SIM from my Moto X Pure or does this LG take a different size SIM? Edit: Nevermind. Should have read the link I posted in the previous post. That comparison shows both phones take the same size SIM (nano). DC

    Thanks. Good to know. Where are you purchasing the phone in Blue? Could only find Black and Gray the other day on Amazon. Thanks. Not sure where I'm getting the phone at this point. Not surprised that Phone Arena's info is suspect. They tend to guess at specs until a phone is announced and then fail to update once the specs are available. Is there a website that would have definitive specs on these phones? I couldn't find band info anywhere on LG's site. So you guys think this phone will perform as well as my Moto X Pure Edition from a cellular connectivity standpoint? I used to need an Airave at my house but since Sprint improved the network, I no longer do. But, the basement has a bit of a weak signal which my Moto X holds onto so I'm hoping the next phone is not a step backward. DC

    I'm in the market for a new phone and this one has made my radar. I have a couple of questions for the gurus. I'll be using the phone on the Sprint network via Ting. 1) While comparing this phone to my current phone (Moto X Pure Edition) on the Phone Arena website, I noticed quite a bit of differences in band availability. Compared to the Moto X Pure, the LG G7 ThinQ is missing bands 1, 3, 8, 12, 17, 25, 26, 38, & 41. But, it does have some bands the Moto X does not: 20, 28, 46, & 66. What, if any, performance difference would this make in the two phones?   7. Update: After two Moto X PE phones, numerous factory resets, much research and testing, there is now a work around to the problem of not getting 3G data on these phones. The problem does not appear to impact any phones on the big 4 networks. It only impacts phones on a Sprint MVNO. There are now known eHRPD issues with Sprint and their MVNOs. The work around solution is to disable eHRPD. Sprint is working on changes to eHRPD that may resolve the issue permanently. Thanks to Ting for their persistence in helping get to the bottom of this problem. I don't understand how eHRPD issues can impact my phone on Ting but not when connected directly to Sprint. I've also acquired an Airave device and I was able to get 3G data via the Airave with no issues whether eHRPD is enabled or not. Strange. Anyone have any insight to offer? Also, does anyone know of any potential issues I'll have by leaving eHRPD disabled permanently? Thanks much, DC
  8. Update. I returned my original MXPE because it could not get 3G data. Motorola sent me a new phone but it has the same issue. Since I sent the first MXPE back, I've acquired an Airave because the Sprint signals at my house are a bit weak. Strange thing is that I do get 3G data when connected to the Airave but nowhere else. Can anyone explain this? Is there anyone else here using the Sprint network as a customer of Ting who has this phone and is having an issue with 3G data? Thanks, DC
  9. Thanks. I also posted this request on XDA and Android Central. Even though the responses were limited, it appears enough people have no issues with Sprint that my problem is narrowed down to either a phone problem or a Ting problem. DC
  10. Would you folks test your 3G data connection on the MXPE and report whether or not it works? Also, report if you are using Sprint directly or if you access their network through an MVNO (I use Ting). I'm working with Ting and Motorola to resolve my lack of 3G issue and we are trying to determine if others are having the same issue. I started a thread on XDA and so far with limited responses, users on AT&T, T-mobile, and Verizon are reporting no issues. Appreciate the help. DC
  11. Swapped SIMs with one sent by Ting. New SIM had same version number (63.08a) and made no difference. Still no 3G data. DC

Motorola has made it clear that unlocking the bootloader (necessary for root) voids the warranty on this phone so I won't chance rooting until I determine if the phone has to be replaced. Not sure I'd root this phone anyway. Not much to be gained and it makes it a hassle to get updates. DC
  13. Ting is wanting to try manually reprogramming the phone but so far we've not been able to gain access to the manual programming screens. Their system shows the MSL to be 000000 but that doesn't work when trying to access the manual progamming. They also tried 123456 which didn't work. I'm waiting on response from Motorola but wondered if anyone here knows how to find the correct MSL or how to gain access to the programming screens if the MSL really is 000000. Also, Ting sent me a new SIM. It's marked the same as the current one. Haven't tried it yet as they want to be involved when I install it and trying activating again. DC
  14. Not sure. The phone was ordered from Motorola with a "Sprint" SIM. Ting initially said the Sprint SIM would work. The phone arrived with the SIM installed and without any material that would identify the model number. The only text on the SIM is: ICC Sprint 63.08a How can I verify that this is SIM model SIMGLW446C? DC
  15. Is anyone with a MXPE having issues with 3G data? Last week I activated a new Moto X Pure Edition on the Sprint network via MVNO Ting. The phone appeared to activate just fine. Voice, text, LTE, Wi-Fi, and 1x data are all working without any obvious issues. 3G data is not working. If I set Preferred Network Type to "LTE (recommended)", mobile data works on LTE but if I travel to an area that has not yet been upgraded to LTE, it will not drop back to 3G. Further, if I choose 3G as the Preferred Network Type regardless of whether the phone is connected to an LTE tower or a non-LTE tower, I get no data connection. Same for Global - no 3G connection. HOWEVER, if I choose "1x" as the Preferred Network Type (whether in an LTE area or not) then the phone will establish a data connection. The phone reports this connection as 3G in the status bar but the speed is so unusable that I doubt it can be a 3G connection. I've done a carrier wipe a couple of times, updated the device config (profile) and updated the PRL. Nothing changed. I did not have this issue with my Nexus 5. SignalCheck Pro reports that mobile data is unregistered. Is registration of 3G data tied to the SIM card or to the MEID of the phone itself? Why would I be able to get a 1x data connection but not 3G? Ting is suggesting network problems but I'm not sure as the problem has persisted through several cities around west Texas and eastern New Mexico and throughout Lubbock TX which has many cell towers. Is the SIM for the MXPE compatible with my old Nexus 5? I'm wondering if swapping the SIM to the N5 will help with diagnosing the problem. Thanks for any help. This one is puzzling. DC
  16. Thank you again. Ting recommended a carrier reset with Wi-Fi turned off. That borked voice, text, LTE and 1x as well. I then performed a factory reset which got the phone mostly working again. I still do not have 3G data but something has changed. SCP now reports the connection as "Inactive" instead of as unregistered. It also reports a 1xRTT and eHRPD connection. The Sprint connection icon in the drop down box does not show 3G. The Service State under SIM Status in Settings shows Data as "In Service". Baffled as to why the Data Service State shows to be In Service when SCP shows it (apparently correctly) to be inactive. If I set the Preferred Network Type to 1x, the Sprint icon shows the connection to be 3G. SCP reports only a 1xRTT connection which I assume is correct. If Ting can't figure something out soon, I may start a new thread or post in the Moto X PE thread. Would welcome input from anyone. Scratching my head at this point and wondering if I just have a bad phone. DC

I'll verify again the info I gave Ting but they think it's correct for what that's worth. What voodoo is at play that lets me get a 1x data connection but not 3G? Is there a report within SCP that would help me communicate the problem to Ting? Appreciate your help. DC

I'll repeat it: "What does it mean when SignalCheck Pro reports that mobile data is "unregistered" when I have the "Preferred Network Type" set to 3G?" I only included the other information as background to why I need the question answered. Advising me not to assume is good advice but I didn't assume anything. You did. I contacted Ting before I purchased the phone, was told that it was eligible and was told the Sprint SIM would work. I'm trying to resolve the issue myself and need to understand what SignalCheck Pro is telling me. If anyone has any other info that would help, that would be cool. DC

  20. The MXPE is on my radar to replace my ailing Nexus 5. Other than wireless charging, is there anything the MXPE DOES NOT have that the Nexus 5 does? DC
  21. At least one Ting user has reported successful activation on Ting using CDMA. Ting has not officially responded that the phone can be supported via CDMA but I suspect that announcement next week. Regarding Bill's attempt at the BYOD check, it looks like Sprint's financial eligibility database was not yet up to date for the phone (or maybe the SIM). Maybe it'll work now. DC
  22. Thanks, I'll do some more research on this later. But for now, the crazy phone started working normally again without any effort on my part. Must be a bad connection or something. I'm about ready for a new phone but finding a decent phone about the size of the N5 with removeable battery and SD slot seems out of reach. DC
  23. Hmmm, the USB cable does work in fastboot. I'm totally unfamiliar with fastboot commands and flashing factory images. I rooted the phone using Wug's excellent rootkit and never bothered to learn how to do things manually. Is there a good online tutorial somewhere that could guide me in reflashing a factory image?   24. I wonder if any of you guys would have some ideas regarding problems that just started with my N5. A couple of days ago, the phone was upgraded to LMY48I. The problems began after that but that could have just been a coincidence. Phone is rooted but stock otherwise. Problems: 1) Wireless charging no longer works. 2) Cannot connect to a PC 3) Standard wired charging does not work. However, if I turn the phone off, plug it into the charger and leave the phone off for about 30 minutes, then turn the phone on and don't touch it, it will charge but . . . 4) When charging as described above, there is no indicator that charging is happening. The only way I know it's charging is that the battery indicator % climbs. I have two wireless chargers including one Nexus charger and neither work with this phone but both work with my buddy's phone. Although I cannot connect to a PC, the USB port is at least partially working because I can connect my external micro-SD card adapter to the port and it powers up and allows file transfers just fine. I have 3 new cables, none of which made any difference. When plugged in with the power off, the displays alternates back and forth between the battery symbol with the lightning bolt and the battery symbol that shows the current charge on the battery but there is no animation showing the battery is charging like there used to be. I've taken the back off the phone and visually checked the battery to see if it was swollen (its not). Suggestions? Thanks, DC
