  1. How dumb. They should want at least ONE more wired internet provider beyond the local cable and telephone monopolies. Those two have built up telephone and cable wiring assets that they are now using to provide last mile internet access. Certainly the market has room for a pure play fiber/ethernet last mile solution too?

most town councils are pretty dumb they get locked into an exclusive contract with company A for a few pieces of silver they think they got a great deal company B comes in and says hey we can give you better but all the red tape and if these contract have actual time limits hands are tied... thats why DSL got a foot hold because it was from phone companies it gave consumers the ability to get two choices  without cities backing out of deals with cable companies

Looks like apple is in the works for something.  Although probably many many months off.... A sapphire glass screen would be something quite interesting for protecting against screen damage being that it is the falls into the second hardest substance category on the Mohs scale. No more ugly phone cases.

I am not sure how strong the new gorilla glass is, but could compare?

that plant is right down the street from me...

in theory the sapphire is supposed to be more scratch resistant.. but i believe the gorrila glass is more shatter resistant

  3. I don't think that the Sprint HTC One supports 800MHz LTE. That would mean I would have to wait until upgrade time in June of 2015, and pray that Phoenix would be built out for Spark by then. Does anyone know if that is the case?

After getting burned by Wimax on the last contract cycle for Phoenix with the Evo 3D, I don't think I'll be renewing in 2015 to gamble that Spark will be the salvation in my neighborhood that regular LTE wasn't.

the htc one is not triband but the htc one max is

  4. In 2015, you will not have the option of renewing your contract in return for a subsidized equipment upgrade.  In fact, you probably will not have that option later this spring.  Contracts and subsidies are going away soon.

    AJ

yea but wont that pay as you go plan still be in place?  i figured that would replace the subsidized model people have been spoiled for way too long now as it is...  but the my way plans are at least a way to make it easier on the subscriber than having to dish out full price at time of sale..

a donation will give you a step up on that info in the members areas there are alot of maps that have this info in it.  there have been a ton of tower expansions phx is well underway most of the towers have had the network vision upgrades that means that the towers are upgraded but the backhaul for 4g hasnt... LTE comes when backhaul work gets done and thats by century link and cox...  but if you have 3g where you are its likely that lte will be shortly following once the backhaul is in place...

i would highly recommend making a donation whatever you feel is fair and the amount of info you get its worth it... make educated decisions not just guesses...

  6. eHRPD is just a software for a seemless handoff from LTE to 3G, essentially eHRPD is EVDO.  You will get the same speeds on 3G EVDO as if you were on eHRPD.  Why would you turn off LTE if it is available in your area?

The op doesnt have LTE, but to answer your question as to why someone would... i work at the airport in Phoenix.  We have LTE at the Airport occasionally im on the fringe of a couple of towers' range..  i routinely shut off my LTE because ill get stuck connected to one with Signal Check showing 110 or more db so im not getting any data... but connected to LTE so until more towers closer or actually on the airport grounds get LTE when im at work ill routinely shut it off or ill have unusable LTE its pretty but kind of worthless lol

  7. Hagerstown is the cellular equivalent of Death Valley.   Thanks for the welcome!  Sprints latest information to me concerning 47374 was that the "installers were finished along the highways and were beginning work in my city."  That actually made no sense as there are only two towers in this area and neither are on the highway...so...ironic considering the posts about interstates and such.  My latest tidbit on my HTC EVO 4G LTE is the signal is bouncing from 0 bars to 5 bars to roaming and to any combination of the above.  I only live 1.5 miles from the nearest tower and can see it out my front window so there is no good reason for the signal to be doing that.

Alas...someday my phone will say 4G.  Someday.  It may also say Verizon....

I understand the 4g part i mean its been just relatively recently that here in phx have seen some. so i feel your pain.but thankfully we have been seeing alot of updates now that our back haul vendors are catching up to the contractors doing the work...

As for why you may have bad reception from a tower you have a few things less than obvious could be the problem... signal loss woudnt necessary  be an issue of tower load but slower speeds could be attributed to that fortunately for you most people in eastern indiana are either VZW or ATT. so tower loads are probably not a problem and you should be seeing as NV gets in full swing an even nicer throughput

the biggest thing that addresses signal when you can see the tower is at what angle from a sector are you  Cell towers are not omnidirectional like a radio tower so there is signal loss if you are at a right angle from the panels direction

But the largest thing to consider especially in a less dense area like Richmond is downtilt of the panels themselves.  they may increase the uptilt of a sector to reach slightly farther or decrease it to get closer to the tower itself so you may be right up on top of the tower and get no signal but people 5 miles away getting 4 bars..

now sometimes thats by design and sometimes its by bad workmanship from the contractors hired either way putting in a job ticket might fix it for you, also before phoenix started full swing i put in a request for an airwave to help with my signal in my old home it helped for any dropped calls i may have had.

  8. As a geographer, I love old highway right of way and classic roadside architecture.  Though some stretches of the Interstate Highway System are notable exceptions, most just distance us from the landscape and communities they pass by at 70 MPH.

    AJ

Oh I agree totally nothing like having some of the greatest views of things like mountains and rivers only to have a view of a big concrete Wall to look at..

  9. Backhaul and LTE must be steering clear of Richmond like I-70 does.  Man, just across the Ohio state line, I remember that big, sweeping curve, a huge change in the Interstate right of way.

    :P

    AJ

Bah interstates! Who needs those when you have the National road? Interstates are a fad. US 40 is forever... I hear hear they said the same thing all all across the country on Highway 66 too lol who's going to get get their kicks on I40 fix the roads we got don't build new ones I always say. Who needs to go 70 much any way... Said ppl in the 1950s

  10. Robert, thank you for the reply. The local ILEC is Frontier.

May I ask where you got the information that our sites had been upgraded? Sprint forums told me three days ago that upgrades were scheduled to begin within the next 90 days. I know that is their canned answer, but it surprises me to hear that the sites have been upgraded.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

Hey Rick welcome to s4gru.. Being from Hagerstown. Originally I get your pain it's rough going home for service... Hell htowns only tower is off Germantown road down by mcyds off 1 and 70. When vzw finally put a tower up near the country club I was able to roam while home.. Was always frustrating visiting lol.

But for raw info to get a better idea of what's going on make a donation whatever you can every bit helps. The access and maps you get is worth it and better than any lying u will get at sprint forums.

Go Tigers... And I can't help it Go Boilermakers lol

  11. I must be blind cause I don't see where to change that.

  12. I've been unemployed for over a year now and just got a job(yay me!) and will have some money to donate again. And I thought this is kind of a cool idea to maybe get some donations. The posting level numbers( 1x rtt, 1x adavanced, 4g etc...) we could donate like 10 bucks and get to choose our own. I see some people already have some custom ones like mikejeep is the signal check guy. I'd give 10 bucks to be called "The Doctor". I plan on giving money anyways, just a nice bonus. As long as its kept clean think it may work.

Just so you know you can already change that!!! I would think a time lord would have noticed that lol

but ill take that ten dollars lol

  13. But can't I get a better signal with 3 of them? ;)

Robert via Samsung Note 8.0 using Tapatalk Pro

well that would certainly depend since most radio station towers are omnidirectional no.. but if they were unidirectional yes that would make a better signal.. depending on the reference point im looking at

it would be like having a yagi with more elements but those make no sense in a radio station you want a large audience in all directions from the station...

now i could see the argument of saying that more cell panels on a site would give a better signal ok not signal but throughput, if they are not connected to one radio but multiple radios because then you could double the amount of users to each site. you would have less bandwidth issues.. which may be the argument being made... could be but it doesnt come across as such..

i know you were being sarcastic and in the way you meant it obviously no... but there is a point there lol

  14. every body has said it, load on tower... i mean i have a finite amount of data going through a single pipe... if i have 30 people hooked up to it its going to dribble at the end.  i mean we have all had bandwidth issues in the past whether at home or using a single wifi connection with multiple people, this is expected everywhere and easiest to explain

also your location in reference the available sectors you can be  the same distance from a tower.. but if your location is offset from the panels at a right angle your going to get significant signal degradation they try to elieviate this by having multiple sectors but still you are going to get an uneven power distribution

also keep in mind the angle the panels are pointed uptilt is something thats hard to measure or anticipate you may have lousy signal the same distance from once site than another but be able to go a few miles further and get great signal, not knowing those numbers makes it impossible for anyone to say why your home tower is slower than other towers... but you have to keep these variables in mind when you go to compare one tower or another.

you cant just say im x miles from tower a and i get this signal so if im x miles from tower b i should get this signal without knowing the other variables like sector direction, and tower uptilt. if you are going to test a site do it from different locations in relation to the towers to see if there is a problem with the site or just that its set up with different variables.
