  1. Deal structures can be fascinating. Getting into the specifics of the deal, it appears that Metro will be buying T-Mobile. Then issuing 74% of its common stock to DT. The surviving company will in fact be Metro, but it will trade under the T-Mobile name.

The transaction is structured as a recapitalization, in which MetroPCS will declare a 1 for 2 reverse stock split, make a cash payment of $1.5 billion to its shareholders and acquire all of T-Mobile's capital stock by issuing to Deutsche Telekom 74 percent of MetroPCS' common stock on a pro forma basis. DT also will roll its existing intercompany debt into new $15 billion senior unsecured notes of the combined company, thereby providing the combined company with a $500 million unsecured revolving credit facility and provide a $5.5 billion backstop commitment.

  2. I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I learn from every post on this forum :)

Gotcha. Two different subjects being discussed in this thread and got my wires crossed. If their device doesn't have the capability to roam on VZW 850, then, they would miss out on that aspect, but could still use it on the network. However, if Metro Prepaid customers wanted to come to Sprint, they most likely would be drawn to a Sprint Prepaid brand, right? Which they do not offer off Sprint network coverage the last time I checked.

But Sprint's prepaid phones use Sprint's native network which covers more area than Metro's. Plus, I tend to think that MetroPCS customers probably don't roam outside of major cities that much anyway, so roaming coverage probably isn't that big a deal. Metro and Sprint's Boost brand may have a lot of demographic similarities.

  3. $1.5B plus a 26% stake in the new entity. Depending on the value of the new company it could be more or less than the prospective deal that they supposedly had with Sprint.

The engadget headline didn't really get that. Haven't seen anything yet on what the new Company's value will be. Wonder if they'll keep the T-Mobile brand name or change it to something else?

I bet the $1.5 billion in cash was a good sweetener for Metro over Sprint.

  4. These are prepaid handsets. Virgin and Boost customers don't get Verizon/USCC roaming either.

MetroPCS does offer plans with nationwide extended coverage. So those phones have to roam on someone's network. Don't know if Metro roams with Sprint or Verizon.

  5. Really? T-Mobile is a PCS 1900 MHz and AWS 2100+1700 MHz carrier, and MetroPCS is a PCS 1900 MHz and AWS 2100+1700 MHz carrier. So, there you go.

I'm not a spectrum expert. It gets too complicated. That's what you all are here for. lol. Thanks for the info. So this does make more sense for T-Mo to pick up than for Sprint.

  6. The rumor mill is churning today. Bloomberg has a story on T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telekom, acquiring MetroPCS. I didn't know metro's spectrum was compatible with anything T-Mo had. Interesting, rumors were that Sprint may have been in contention as well. We know they had a deal worked out with Metro earlier this year and it was squashed by Sprint's board. Does this make Leap a prime target for Sprint now?

  7. That's the crux of this article.

1:20 PM -- Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) could make millions selling off spectrum that it can't use to fund the 4G updates tied to its "Network Vision" program.

On Wednesday, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski opened the way to allowing 4G services on the 2.3GHz Wireless Communications Services (WCS) band. AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) will be the main beneficiary if the FCC follows the chairman's lead, as it holds the most WCS licenses. (See FCC Chairman Says Yes to WCS for 4G and AT&T to Buy NextWave for 'Alternative' 4G .)

I'll leave it to the spectrum experts on s4gru to state whether this spectrum would actually be valuable to ATT.

  8. I'm pretty sure webos is dead. Let it go. When you have HP's CEO calling the WebOS purchase a "detour" you know it's over. It'll be an OS people wistfully remember as being great and never getting a fair shot. Which it really didn't. But, it seems like a lot of the ideas that webOS had that made it interesting are finding their ways into the other major OSes.

  9. My last phone purchase as well as an upgrade for my mother-in-law were both at Best Buy. Like the fact that they have instant discounts instead of mail-in rebates. Also, their 30 day price match policy applies to phones as well. So, if you buy a phone and they drop the price on it within 30 days you can get a refund on the price difference.

  10. I am definitely not an apple fan at all but I agree with you. The phone has nice specs for a current device but I was shocked that they would still have the same camera from the 4s, now granted the parts for the camera are smaller but its still the same camera. I was also hoping it would have at least a 720p 4" screen, not sure where they got the 1136*640 from(not really that big of a difference anyway). This was more like a iphone 4s s. The jump from the 3gs to the 4 was pretty substantial, the jump from the 4 to the 4s was minor(as expected) but I would have thought that the jump from the 4s to the 5 would be a lot bigger that this. And whats the deal with no NFC?

I think the screen resolution is just so that existing apps can be stretched to fit screen without distortion. I'm sure NFC will come next year once apple works out deals for its wallet system. As far as the camera, it's an improvement over previous version. How much of an improvement? I guess we'll see. They'll still probably sell 10 million of them the first week.
