  1. Get all 5 in upstate but dont port the two numbers yet. Have the store overnight them to florida and once your parents get them call care and have the numbers ported.

This. I've added my dad and my sister to my plan this way. Added lines in NY, and mailed the phones to CA. They went into the store and had their numbers ported over on the new lines.

  2. I think it would asinine to sell off 800Mhz after all that Sprint had to overcome to get it deployed. On top of the fact that device support is quite prevalent.

Lets not forget, Sprint has more than 10Mhz of 800Mhz in most markets, eventually the CDMA portion will  get refarmed, probably around the time that 600Mhz could get deployed (2020-2021)

    Making 600Mhz even less important.

The cdma carrier in 800mhz won't free up much of anything for refarming to LTE when it gets shut down. They only have 14mhz.

  3. I found this article amusing: http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/08/technology/verizon-5g/index.html

They start by saying that Verizon was the first to deploy a 4G network (maybe the first US carrier to deploy an LTE network, but Sprint beat them with WiMax by a couple of years and Korea had it a couple years before that), gush about how great Verizon's new network will be, and then go on to admit that they don't have a clue what 5G actually means.

They didn't even have the first LTE network, MetroPCS beat them to it in the US.

  4. That's what they say. I've seen it done where it's been added via the online account and then a few days later a claim done.

Good to know on the AppleCare refund.

I tried that in the past and it didn't work for me. I wouldn't recommend relying on that in case something happens.

  5. I'm thinking I might switch over to tep if anything at all. Paying for AppleCare when it won't transfer to my new phone next year doesn't make any sense to me. I've never lost a phone or had one stolen so between apple just taking care of it's customers and me being easy on my phone I think I'll be okay.

Either that or I'll just add on tep on my sprint.com account when anything happens.

You can only add TEP within 30 days of activation or during any random open enrollment periods.

  6. That's in my top 3 of android gripes. We iPhone users are used to the screen lighting up when we get a text, or other alert. Android can't do it without special apps.

Battery life would drop more than it already is if the screen kept lighting up with every notification. It's cool, but I don't see it working on Android without Motorola's implementation with active notifications on an amoled screen. Until manufacturers stop trying to make our phones into a razor blade and use a good sized battery many Android phones will be stuck with the notification light instead.

  7. Anyone had a chance to try the "App Ops"/Permission Controls ? If so do you get control of all the permissions listed at instal? Any additional controls?

It's a toggle list for each permission. Keep in mind you will break some apps robbing them of permissions they need to function. This is the message you get when turning stuff off.

  8. This is testing my memory a bit. One of the inadvertant benefits of the exclusive agreement is that it forced the competition (the other wireless carriers) to find an alternative, which gave Android a chance to match and surpas the iPhone in many respects. Unfortunately in the end that resulted in another duopoly - Android/iOS, and iTunes/App Store and Google Play. If I have a rant it is that you can not buy apps at a store like you can any other software application not to mention buy from the developers themselves and sideload it. I do not like being forced to do business and buy products from Google and Apple.

You can buy from developers and side load it on Android. They don't do this because its easier to get paid listing apps on Google play.

  9. While personally I don't need 4k on a smartphone device for 4k vr, there still likely will be a big market for such an "all in one" device, especially as more companies compete for the more/most feature-rich products.

For instance, rumors are that the may be a 4k screen for the Sony Z5+. It makes sense for these smartphone/vr headeset combo devices to be made for the portability factor. Even though many of these same people who want 4k for vr, may not think its needed for the smartphone.

Yet, it'll still be there as manufacturers think of having their "ultimate" devices. I still figure on their being lesser end devices with 1080p though.

I can barely see the pixels on my nexus 5 screen holding it as close to my face as my eyes will focus. I can't see pixels on the newer Samsung displays at all. There is a lot more to a quality display than pixel density and resolution. At some point you are adding pixels just for the sake of adding pixels.

  10.

yeah i find IOS to be alot smother especially when the phone is 1 or 2 years old, (my grandma has an iPhone 4s works as well as the day she bought it, on IOS 8.4) most of my family was firmly on android (samsung) until just this year, after seeing my iphone 5 hold up for two years and watching their phones freeze crash, lag, not receive software updates, they have all switched to iphone 6 or 6 plus... I think Samsung is losing a lot ground in the premium market, hence this poorly thought out test drive with its two gigs of data.

It's not so much ios being smoother than Android. It's all the garbage Samsung packs on top of Android in touchwiz that slows it down.

  11. In my prefernce, I'm not a big fan of large screen televisions as they currently are and may be for some time. I just don't like real world distractions while watching, and since I don't have much of a choice at the moment and likely for quite a while, I choose to multitask with the television on while online the device.

I know there are people who may disagree with this, and I completely understand the downsides many people have with this, or simply just not thinking of it in such a serious way. I definitely don't argue the potential societal and other issues which could be majorly resolved by giving people a choice of online interactive, or fully personal private space.

What I'm getting at, is wanting to be able to have a fully virtual reality based custom reality software that is much more than a gaming headset, which is why I'm supportive of a 6inch 4k screen. My reasons have nothing to do with movie streaming and wasting data. I want this, along with medical sensory drugs and devices to help form this new life experience, which has absolutely nothing to do with shootem up games, porn stuff, typical aged social building software, etc.

So, I'm pretty much on the side of 4k really not being needed for conventional stuff, especially as it wastes streaming data. However, if anyone would like to know a bit about it, please pm to me. As a notice though, I'm having some increased health problems with my nerves and muscles, so I may be a bit longer from here somewhat. Whatever happens, I do support S4GRU!

If you want a VR headset then buy one. The oculus should be available early next year and there are several others. You can even get the Samsung set up. I still don't see how that translates to needing 4k or uhd resolution on your phone.

In case you didn't know, 4k is 4096x2160 and uhd is 3820x2160. Samsung managed to make it work with only 2560x1440.

  12. http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/sprints-claure-gives-himself-3-5-years-turnaround-after-1-year-job/2015-08-25

Marcelo is saying he gives himself 3 to 5 years to turn Sprint around. What happened to the 24 months of being no. 1 or 2 for the network?

Once the network is where it should be, its going to take time to regain lost subscribers, fix brand image, return to profitability etc.

  13. Wouldn't a lot of that boil down to the utter and complete lack of 4K content out there? I know that's the main reason I would not upgrade right now.

Pretty much. I won't upgrade for a long time. It's never fun trying to explain the reason their TV looks bad is because cable TV can't keep up. Upscaling only goes so far.

  14. Inconceivable on both accounts.  The price will be the price and I'm sure there will be several versions available from brick and mortar Bestbuys.  If this is the way that Moto wants to "change the industry" they'll be plunking down handsets with options in every place they possibly can, at least that's how I view it.

However, with the Motomaker, I'm not sure why you'd really get it from Bestbuy versus just making it yourself online?  Regardless, I'm sure that BB will have like a black and a white version with higher storage sizes.  If anything, BB and Amazon will likely offer better incentives and deals than Moto does to get you to purchase there like they do with current phones.

Best Buy sold the Nexus 5 for $400 vs Google Play's $350 price. My store price matched Google Play for me, but it's not hard to see the price being different.

  15. I think what eventually will happen is that everything will be a minimum 1080p, possibly having QHD being scrapped in favor of 4k. Some midrange devices may have 1080p, though I think it'll become standard for budget devices, while midrange and premium devices have 4k. Instead of competing so much on display resolution, devices will focus on features, very notably virtual reality.

I think most television screens under 48 inches will be 4k, while sizes above will be starting at 8k.

Devices may move up to that resolution but it doesn't mean its a good thing. You can have a beautiful display with 1080p resolution on a screen the size used in phones. TV's may keep following that path, but content needs to catch up. I deliver and install tv's and appliances and any time I set up one of the newer UHD tv's I have to sit there and explain why it looks like shit compared to what they saw in store.

  16. So, I was on the phone with Sprint Customer Care, and they say our tax rate for New York City is 10.8490%, which doesn't match the $124 in taxes quoted over the phone (and on the website). I called the 86th Street store and they said that there are additional taxes on top of the sales tax, including the mobility tax and a transit wireless tax. When I said taxes on the Note 5 were about $124 he said that sounded right because for the $720 phone it was totaling around $850 in the system. The guy at the 86th Street store said the invoice would show all applicable taxes, so today when I go buy a replacement hot spot for my plan, I'll see what the taxes amount to. It's just weird I can't get a straight answer until I actually purchase a device. If the $124 is right, that's about 17.34% in taxes. There's no mention of fees to finance, and there shouldn't be. When I financed a phone for my grandmother in New Hampshire where there is no sales tax, nothing was due at all and the payments are exactly the price of the phone divided by 24, with no noticeable change in NH-based monthly taxes on her line.

Best Buy taxes amount to the exact 8.875% NYS/NYC rate.

Sorry if this is getting lengthy, but if this helps anyone on S4GRU in the NYC area make decisions in the future on where to buy devices, all the better.

This happened to me when I bought my sisters m8. I ended up calling telesales and ordered that way since the website was showing the wrong tax amount. I don't know how or why, but I ended up paying less sales tax than was actually due.

  17. I lucked out with this and signed up for the S6 edge and got a $20 a month bill credit so i am only paying $5-$7 a month for the phone. I dotn remember exactly. only thing is when you do the lease they add on insurance for the first 3 months mandatory and required. But i mean its not a horrible deal. Just dont destroy the phone between contract sign up and return date.

Insurance is not a requirement. The rep doesn't want to lose their commission on adding tep.
