  1. More of a Northern Wisconsin market thing but just to show how impressive 800SMR could be.... I was in Cleveland, WI and was receiving 1x800 from the tower in Manitowoc, WI which is approximately 13 mi away. It wasn't strong but it worked! (mostly line of sight over water. Once the Sheboygan towers go 800SMR, Sprint could be useful at our lake house)

Snapped the screen shot before full connection but it did connect.

  2. Would great to be able to see a time lapse video of the Milwaukee area. Who has skills?

Like time lapse of pins going up on the sponsor map? That would have been a good idea. I could try to start that from now on with daily screen shots, then make a gif.....for the sponsor side only of course. Not sure if Robert would be okay with this.

Madison is back to eHRPD this morning. EV-DO for the past couple days.

  3. I'd assume LTE will only be active on that tower when a cluster of towers are ready to go live. I drive past there every day. I'll let you guys know when its active.

Not necessary for a cluster to be ready.  Many of the towers have started all by their lonesome....ie, the McFarland Tower was the only one active in our area, then Oregon, then Sun Prairie, etc. etc.  I think they just need all the pieces to be in place, then whammo, turn it on.

Since you work in the Greenway area, head out Greenway until it hits Pleasant View, then turn right, after you pass the golf course turn in, keep an eye to the left and see if you see any work going on if there's a tower there or something ;) .  I'm interested to understand these guys' pattern for work.  That High St. tower is ready for juice as far as I could tell last night, so I'm sure they've moved on to the next tower.  That antenna I posted is what you're looking for with the the two RRU's on them.

  4. (I don't know if Sprint uses AT&T fiber around here exclusively or not). He said that Sprint is only going with 1Gbps whereas AT&T and Verizon and so on, are putting in 10Gbps usually. He thought that was kind of shotty that Sprint was only installing 1Gbps instead of 10. That can easily be changed though.

He also made the comment that Sprint is moving pretty slow on this work.

The fiber here in Fitchburg has AT&T on all the flags. The switches are easy enough for them to swap out from 1 to 10 Gbps in the cabinets. I do think that's lame they aren't putting in 10s right away. Hopefully that's not everywhere.

I'd say their slow! They have hundreds of towers to do!!!! :-)

  5. I work by greenway station. That tower is not broadcasting lte as far as my discovery test is concerned. I take airport rd on my wsy home from work. I'll be sure to run discovery and sensory when I go home.

Well, cruise east on Airport Rd until it turns into Century....then turn north (left) on High St. If you hit Hawkridge Park, you've gone too far :)

  6. No, that wouldn't be your tower. You are a S4GRU member, head over to the maps for your closest tower.  The one I'm referring to is accepted for 4G, but until we map it, there's no way to know if its broadcasting.  Airport Rd. and the Beltline is pretty generic, its really a little northeast of there.  But at Airport and the Beltline, you'd probably get some signal.

Whoops, you aren't a sponsor....you should become one and then see the maps and join the fun!!!

  7. It is marked as a 4G accepted site on the NV sites complete map in the sponsor forum. A question about the acceptance process: will all sites eventually turn green on that map?

From purple to yellow to green is how I've seen most of the sites going on those maps.  Yes, all sites in Madison will eventually be GREEN, meaning they are 3G/4G/800.  That's a complete NV build of a tower and all our sites will get the NV updating.

  8. I live near Greenway station and I would suspect this tower would supply LTE for me and I do not have LTE :(   I do go by that area a lot and will check it out.

  9. I'm not in the middleton area...I work on the West Side of Madison (research park area).  When I saw the permit for the site on Tokey I was happy as hell, because that's right behind where I work...but as of right now..nothing.  All of Madison is pretty much sucking when it comes to LTE.  There's a little work on the beltline, but that's about it.

My wife is right there as well, in Research Park. I keep asking her to tell me if her phone sees 4G symbol ever, but she doesn't like to play our little obsession of LTE game.....glad someone else will be able to notify us of a LTE signal when that Tokay tower goes live.

  10.

Sprint really needs to get these sites up and running.  I am on the west side of Madison, and can barely look at facebook because the data speed is horrible.  Attempting to stream Pandora is a complete joke.  The downtown area of Madison is even worse.  I roam when I am down on State Street by Campus Barber Shop.

So the Sprint tower is right on top of the Towers Apartments about 1/2 of a block from Campus Barber shop (above Urban Outfitters).  I get my hairs cut there about every 5 weeks and was in there just last week.  I had 300kbps up and 100kbps down.  It really was remarkable speed for that area compared to what I usually see.  I think that the antenna hang off the side, but they aren't real visible to what updates were done yet and they're not on that permits list.  Downtown Madison needs a few more towers for my liking.....800MHz or not, it's a little sparse down here.  They could definitely use one or two more over by Camp Randall.  Real dead zone on my way home down Monroe.  I don't think that 800MHz is going to save that either since its a little valley there.  Edgewood HS has antenna all over their roof, but none that belong to Sprint.

You're out in Middleton, right?  Did you have any luck finding permit reports in Middleton?  There are only a few towers there, and their city website is not helpful. The tower on Everglade is at least on the west side!

  11. Well, my tower (Seminole Hwy and McKee in Fitchburg) had two trucks at it's base on Friday morning.  The base is pretty occluded by brick walls and a power station....and then a new building that the power station built to further block my snooping.  By Friday afternoon the utilities must have labeled all the buried cable around that area from the bike path north of McKee to just adjacent to the tower.  However, there were flags heading directly to the tower that were already marked for "Fiber Optic Cable".....so my question is more, if there is already Fiber leading to the tower, do they need to add more Fiber?  or is this different Fiber that's needed?

This obviously could be totally unrelated as there are a lot of utilities through that area...but I like to dream. Something has to start on this tower!!!!  gah!

Someone asked earlier about Madison Towers and these are the ones that have approved permits from the City of Madison. I've visited several of these towers and I can't say that they've really had any work done on them.  The Tokay one looks like new antennas, but nothing has happened since, can't get real close to that base (at the News station tower).

Permit reports from the City of Madison, none of these towers are spitting LTE at this time.

    No June Permits filed.
  12. Well, there isn't anything accepted in Madison as of yet. The tower at 30 and 51 looks like it has some new antennas on it for sure. Wasn't able to stop and check the base. That might be next to go live? That's in Madison proper.

Drove up past Beaver Dam today and Beaver Dam has 800 voice kicking and solid LTE. 33 up, 12 down!
