  1. I am guessing that they want you to port-out/port-in so the sales associate gets the commission. I am guessing that you don't need to port-out/port-in and it is more trouble than it is worth. Are you getting some kind of deal on your payments as a new customer (I am just curious). Very interesting story, thanks for sharing. I've always just paid full price for a new device and have had to argue with sales associates to sell it to me off contract because they'd rather save it for a commission sale.
  2. Yeah my only real complaint is the camera. GS6/G4 have much better cameras. But, again, for the price, hard to complain all things considered.
  3. Agreed - but given Sprint Management at the time, I suspect it would have been Sprint owing Verizon money as part of a breakup fee, haha. It was as much AT&T's arrogance as it was T-Mobile's unusual ability to negotiate such a large breakup fee to begin with. Good discussion though - I agree with all of your points.
  4. While I can't speak to the quality of the coverage, it's darn impressive they've covered 300MM pops by the end of October - any way you measure it. All around, the stats are impressive. While we can debate the quality of covering 300MM pops, the financials are what they are, and they're damn impressive. Short recap: 30.3% service margin ($1.9 billion Adjusted EBITDA) $1.12 billion in capex $411 million in Free Cash Flow Just over 1 million NET postpaid adds Postpaid churn of 1.46% I have no idea how T-Mobile does it but it's amazing they can add subs at this rate and keep churn under 1.5%. Bottom line - this is a good thing. If T-Mobile can do it, there is no reason why Sprint can't do it better given Sprint's far superior spectrum position.
  5. Sorry, my post wasn't very clear. The iFixit teardown did show the Nexus 5x having the SMB1358 Quick Charge 2.0 IC So we just don't know why its not enabled.
  6. Ok, here are my thoughts: Battery Life: Seems good enough, it's no iphone but battery under normal usage gets me through the day Screen: Excellent! Very bright/clear! I dont miss SAMOLED at all. Camera: This is STILL a sore spot for the Nexus. The Camera on the LG G4 and GS6 (and iPhone 6) is far superior. Granted, this is a HUGE upgrade over the original nexus 5 camera, it still needs to come a long way before it can be considered flagship level. I still view it better than the Nexus 6 camera, though. Form Factor: I think one of the things that made the Nexus 5 unique was the fact that it was a bit smaller than your average flagship. I miss the older size, which I found to feel just great in the hand. This is actually a bit taller than a GS6 and about the same width. Disappointed that Google didn't keep the unique size of the Nexus 5 and carry it into the Nexus 5x. Performance: Stock Nexus - enough said? This phone flies. Compared to a GS6, this is a MUCH faster phone despite only having 2GB ram and a slower processor. Everything is buttery smooth as it should be. Radio: Phone works great on sprint! Handles bands EXTREMELY well - FAR better than the GS6 ever did. For example, in my office, I would bounce between B41/25/26 at my desk on a GS6. The GS6 could only reliably handle B26 but would always try and shift to a higher band as in an urban environment signal fluctuates. The N5x behaves and just sticks with a stable connection. Band changes in general are smooth and I haven't noticed any issues. Imprint: Probably the biggest surprise feature of the phone. Much better than Apple's TouchID. This is extremely fast and extremely accurate, best on the market. I did not expect this. USB Type C: While many complain about progress, I was actually VERY happy to see this finally start to make it on flagship phones. It's a far more reliable and stable cable which is a good thing. I find the cable to be plugged/unplugged easily and securely. I bought 3 USB Type C to USB Type A cables from oneplusone's website, they are the cheapest at about $5.50/cable for 4ft and $6.50 for 6ft and a flat $4.99 shipping regardless of how many cables you buy. They seem to be a very high quality cable sold "at cost" according to oneplusone. Charging: Google's decision to go 3A over 5V is sort of annoying given that I have a bunch of 9V/12V chargers (quickcharge 2.0 chargers). Even AJ's favorite HP Touchpad 5.3V 2A charger can't give the N5x the juice it can take. For me, I'll settle for using my existing chargers at slower rates until USB Type C charging market matures. Given that the N5x can support quickcharge 2.0, I hope a software update unlocks higher voltage charging.
  7. So I successfully was able to swap sims into my coworkers iPhone 5S on Verizon and access LTE data no problem. VERY COOL. I am a google voice user, so all my calls route over data - I feel liberated.
  8. Eh, who needs CDMA now! I wish it was B26/41 - but B25/41 might be worth playing around with. if I can scoop one up off eBay for cheap, I might test it out.
  9. yeah it's a big bummer they just couldn't add bands 25/26 and do what google/moto do. It's an interesting phone, that's for sure.
  10. It's not the power/volume buttons. I can hold down all three and the rattle is exactly the same.
  11. Mine does the same thing - can you let me know how your replacement goes...
  12. I can confirm the same thing with my GS6. It attempts to do an OTA activation but fails while LTE works great. Overall, this is great news. Getting closer to not having to deal with switching online (which is a hassle because the online activation tool does not work with my SERO account).
  13. My Nexus 5x is waiting for me at home so I swung by the Corporate Sprint Store across the street from my work. For the first time in... at least 5 years? Maybe first time ever? my sprint store experience was actually 100% flawless. Now, as an early adopter, I expect to hit snags at sprint and have become quite good at dealing with them BUT this time I was just in and out with my new SIM card without issue. Thanks to AJ's post, I showed the guy a picture of what SIM card I needed, he checked his sim stock, scanned it, and billed it to my account for 0 dollars. He clearly explained that he had to bill it to my account for inventory purposes and that there was no charge, and I was on my way! It's very refreshing not having to argue with Sprint employees, having to get Sprint Corporate involved, and wasting two hours of my life. It was extremely pleasant - if this is a trend, the future is very bright for Sprint.
  14. Thanks for trying - I'll be curious to hear if you can jump back and forth once the Nexus 5x has been activated on Sprint without having to go online and switch on sprint.com
  15. I am curious if the Nexus 6 would work with both SIMGLW426C and SIMGLW446C. When the Nexus 6 first came out, it was listed as requiring SIMGLW426C (Printed 63.03a on the actual SIM). Now, it seems like the SIMGLW446C (63.08a) works. At any rate, the proper SIM is now SIMGLW446C (63.08a) for the nexus 5x/6/6P, M9, Moto x Pure as far as I can tell. I know my GS6 is rocking a SIMGLW426C (63.03a) and they were not swappable between devices. I will definitely try swapping the SIMGLW446C (63.08a) SIM on the GS6 and see if it carries without needing a manual activation. Big changes in Sprint land and its extremely confusing.

  17. Mine shipped Looks like we'll see a ton go out today. Very unusual for Google to get a preorder right, this is promising. Good for them. Almost as smooth as Apple.
  18. Get an Apple SIM card and just activate following these instructions: https://www.apple.com/ipad/apple-sim/ Pricing is as follows: http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/plan/plan_wall.jsp?tabId=plnTab1820002#!/
  19. sorry for the double post. Sprint already tried to buy T-Mobile - I don't see that happening in the next 5 years Same as above - I don't see that happening in the next 5 years T-Mobile has already said that they are open to being acquired by an outsider. I would not be surprised if it was Dish. Well, yes, that's what they are currently doing. That's unlikely - Softbank is very much invested in Sprint at this point. In reality, you are citing scenarios that can apply to 99% of companies in competitive industries. I definitely agree that the twin bells are too big to fail - however, I would not be surprised if you see their wireless gross margins get wacked over time. Overall, as a wireless spectator, that's my dream. I'd like to see normalized profit levels and see those billions be put back in the pockets of americans. Given how technology driven this sector is, prices should continue to decline. I was just thinking of the cost savings of moving software defined radios into the cloud. I mean, at some point, it's just going to be antennas everywhere with essentially unlimited backhaul capacity over fiber. Now we have 256QAM coming to mobile, 30+ LTE bands in a handset, etc. Technology will continue to get cheaper and data costs should decrease as well. I just can't fathom a world where you think T-Mobile is giving away the farm bringing in $4 billion in cash from operations over the past 12 months on 31.46 billion of revenue. 48.8% gross margins... 20% EBITDA margins... seems like all is well in magenta-land.
  20. Every time you spell doom and gloom, you never cite any numbers. Just like churn - you always said that Legere is gaining customers with marketing gimmicks and that churn will go up, yet that hasn't been the case either (churn is down in the 1.3x% from 1.5%+ over the previous years). I'll just compare 2011/12/13/14 and current 12M through 6/30/15: Revenue, Adj 4,847.4 5,101.3 24,420.0 29,564.0 31,461.0 Growth %, YoY 19.1 5.2 378.7 21.1 14.1 Gross Profit, Adj 1,934.0 2,171.2 12,165.0 14,155.0 15,338.0 Margin % 39.9 42.6 49.8 47.9 48.8 EBITDA, Adj 1,290.0 1,474.4 4,785.5 5,287.0 5,909.0 Margin % 26.6 28.9 19.6 17.9 18.8 Net Income, Adj 309.5 361.3 140.5 -128.7 486.9 Margin % 6.4 7.1 0.6 -0.4 1.5 EPS, Adj 1.69 1.96 0.21 -0.16 0.58 Growth %, YoY 19.9 16.3 -89.5 -- 80.5 Cash from Operations 1,061.8 1,181.5 3,545.0 4,146.0 4,067.0 Capital Expenditures -951.6 -817.2 -4,025.0 -4,317.0 -4,603.0 Free Cash Flow 110.2 364.2 -480.0 -171.0 -536.0 (eh, it wont let me paste in a table, sorry) Cash from operations has increased 4x (from 1billion in 2011 to 4 billion for LTM) and they've invested in their network and are projecting free cash flow of 2.5 billion by 2016. The numbers move in the opposite direction of what you claim. They are becoming more profitable and generating more cash from operations, not less. Please explain how they are racing to the bottom. Again, they are increasing their cash from operations not lowering. This totally goes against what you are saying. I am utterly confused.
  21. so I'll throw in my comments/thoughts: No expandable storage. This is more of a reliability/security issue than anything else. Move on people. Argue the fact all you want. This is a phone for most people and most usage senarios. Want expandable storage? Buy the LG G4. Stop getting caught up in mah. Look at how small the iPhone battery is... it's not about mah - it's about creating well optimized hardware/software and a form factor that feels great to hold. It's designed around normal usage to be charged nightly. Not enough for you? Buy a LG G4. 3GB is where it will ship. Price/performance ratio people... At the end of the day, this is a LG G4 derivative, which is a good thing. The big wild card is the camera. How much does LG want to protect their flagship camera performance from the downmarket nexus 5x? I dunno... big wild card. The LG G4 camera is quite good and gives the GS6 a nice run for its money (though I'll admit the post processing on the GS6 is just better). Either way, the N5x is going to have a vastly superior camera over the N5 gvien how far LG has come with camera tech over the past two years. Overall, this is a nice win for everyone. On the plus side, anyone that wants the features of the LG G4, the price point on a used Sprint G4 is excellent. I picked mine up off craigslist for 350 basically brand new. For me personally, the LG G4 at 5.5" with a thin bezel is the limits on smartphone size, so the moto x is a no go for me. That and moto's displays have historically been poorly calibrated and I wasn't all that impressed with the N6 camera... Long story short, N5x for me. It will be nice to finally retire my old N5.
  22. I am guessing that ATT requested band 30 late in the development cycle... hence the separate SKU. Bummer. More confusion for customers.
  23. This is just marketing. It looks like Verizon is starting to lobby for additional spectrum to be auctioned. This stuff ticks me off. It's like AT&T with their fiber to the press release news.
  24. The coverage is good for the most part. Speeds are hit or miss. It really improves when you find unloaded cells in more suburban locations but downtown and around downtown it's tough.
