No, I had to do something a little more extreme than that. Over in the LG Google Nexus 5 thread the discussion lately has been that installing a specific baseband version (M8974A-1.0.25.0.15) will automatically scan for B41 and ignore missing eCSFB paging information. That's a winning combination if you are trying to connect to B41 sites in San Francisco with a Nexus 5. You just can't make or receive phone calls and SMS's while you are connected to LTE.
-
was that test done with the -108 that is showing on scp?
It was between -82 and -92. I was in my car at the time trying different sectors around the building. On the South side I was only able to get 20mbps, but the north side I got that speedtest.

Also, what is the best sprint LTE anyone has achieved on here? I know we are teased with 60, but I think I've only ever seen maybe 30-35.

I think this is the fastest I've ever seen. I am in a ecsfb hell hole (aka San Francisco) so I probably have the tower to myself. I'm impressed.

Wow impressive. You should lay down a 73 on the sensorly map as well.
So now that it ignores the lack of ecsbf does it miss calls?

Yes, you can't even place calls or texts. On my lock screen it says "Searching for service" and I can't update the PRL or Profile because it says I don't have service. This is all while the LTE is blasting 75mbps at me.

I should also add I tried out a couple other towers.
Here's a timeline of all the tests I did while I was downtown.

1st St and Folsom St near the Bay Bridge onramp.

I wouldn't say that. I tried 3 other towers nearby and the fastest I could get was 20mbps.

So over in the LG Google Nexus 5 thread, they figured out that a certain baseband version ignores the lack of eCSBF on the network and connects to Band 41. I just tired it out, and check this out:
I'm blown away by those speeds. I took that screenshot on the corner of Folsom St and 1st St just a little while ago on my way home from work.

Apparently Google is up to something as KOT49N has been spotted in the wild on a testing device.

Looks like they have an updated baseband too!

I've actually been on calls I started on NV 800 with EVRC-NW in Oakland, and traveled across a bridge into San Francisco where it handed off to legacy 1900 just fine. It even switched the codec mid call, and it was noticeably different.

I actually was on a long call this evening at work and it sounded great. I actually thought, man, this sounds perfect. I made another call right after with the engineering screen up but the service option was only EVRC, not the EVRC_NW I was expecting to indicate HD voice.

OH MY GOD!

I take back what I said earlier about the Ec/Io. -11db seems to be pretty good, especially for that range!
This site has a pretty good description on CDMA Ec/Io
http://www.telecomhall.com/what-is-ecio-and-ebno.aspx
Took these screenshots from work:
And these on my commute home right on the base of the bay bridge:
Seems like I was connected to that same Daly City site through the entire commute. The Ec/Io was in the unusable range in that first screenshot. But at the Bay Bridge, even with interference from Oakland, I was getting a usable signal. Color me impressed! The hilly terrain and the tall buildings should have killed my signal, but it was going strong from all the way across the city.

That's awesome. I just loaded the 800SMR sponsor PRL to see if I get 800SMR at work. I do, but saldly it seems to be a very distant tower in Daly City. My Ec/Io is in the -11dB range.

If I understand you correctly, I think you are saying that your reception is sooo bad that they must have something up their sleeve for the better? I'm not sure if I disagree with that statement but I find it comical (I think the same way) that it is so bad, that it must be because something really good is going to happen.
I hope you're right. I'm a few weeks away from switching to TMO since they pay my ETF now. Still would not want to but I really have no choice.
I used a tmobile SIM for a couple months to try out their network. It's pretty good in SF however I did have some problems with it when visiting family out of town and I had zero signal on a while traveling I-5 on a road trip I did to Las Vegas last week.
-
I think it might be soon. Over the last couple days, my phone has spent a considerable amount of time on 1X. My hope is that they are testing the EVDO equipment.
Yesterday morning the Bay Bridge was all 1X and kicked on EVDO when I got into the city. Then in the evening the reverse was true.

I just got back from a trip to Las Vegas attending CES. The show was great but the 3G service was terrible almost the entire time. Not just in the convention center but in the casino's as well.Sprint must be hooked up to the DAS systems because I had excellent signal but the data service was useless. Phone calls connected just fine and texts were not a problem. My friend with Verizon service had LTE on his Galaxy S3 and it was working just fine even on LTE.It would be pretty sweet if Sprint upgraded their DAS integration with LTE service at the Las Vegas Convention Center and the various casinos with LTE. Especially if they could get B41 LTE going on the DAS.

Or just go this route like a few of us did...

I use it from time to time to check to see if the 1x800 rollout or 800LTE has started here. Also great for finding 1900 LTE sites in test mode. You can hook it up to a computer as well for a better look at things
That seems like a good option. The cheapo RTL-SDR's are not very useful for decoding broadband signals. I've actually been considering a high end SDR like the USRP B200: https://www.ettus.com/product/details/UB200-KIT
It's quite expensive but it has all the features I want. Broadband RF support, 70MHz to 6GHz, sampling up to 56MHz wide channels, and you can actually transmit with it. I went to a conference where they gave a presentation on the interesting things you can do with these:
-
It's probably that the paperclip can't hear the tower very well. Those cheap SDR's don't have very good receive sensitivity. Since your phone is probably very close to the SDR, it will show a very strong signal, and depending on how your signal is on your phone, it could be broadcasting something like 5 watts of power.
I've been having some fun with my RTL-SDR and I'm considering getting a more expensive Ettus Research SDR to experiment with. I actually hooked my SDR up to my big ham radio antenna in my back yard and I can hear AM broadcasts from the other side of the world. Those things are a lot of fun.
-
Can't think of much cheaper than Ting... 1 device at 100 texts a month will run you $9 + surcharges/tax. Ting offers voice/SMS roaming, just not data.
I 2nd this. Ting is the cheapest thing I can think of.

Or just buy signalcheck pro

Yeah, thats actually the better option.

I just tested a call where I started on EVRC-NW on SMR and it sounded awful. Part way through the call it did a hard handoff to EVRC on PCS and sounded fine. The handoff happens 21 seconds into the recording.
I was able to replicate it when I got home by calling the local traffic information.

A couple blocks from Ghirardelli Square.

My guess is that's a signal from the other side of the bay, probably Albany or Sausalito. Your Ec/Io is pretty terrible in that screenshot.
Were you just visiting or are you from there? I don't have a table of SID NID BID like some others here do, so I can't tell you what tower you are connected to.
If you want to see which tower you are connected to, this is a decent app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.parizene.netmonitor&hl=en The geo locations are not usually 100% accurate, but they give you a rough idea.
