  1. They have one: 600 MHz. "Ray said that the company is not currently looking to expand its network footprint and is eagerly awaiting next year's scheduled incentive auctions of 600 MHz broadcast TV spectrum. He said using such spectrum is "a far more effective way to go and build those opportunities out" and that getting access to such low-band spectrum would mean "we would finally have a level playing field in the U.S. marketplace" between smaller carriers and AT&T and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), which dominated the 700 MHz auction in 2008." 2. Regardless, DT channel 51 was there first and is entitled to significant protection until it is retired. That is the key fact. AJ Is ch 51 compatible with the 600MHz reverse auction?
  3. What about interoperability? Does anyone know even how they're leaning?
  4. Guys, those DT channel 51 protection zones follow their stations' Grade A Contours, which can easily extend 60 miles outside of urban areas. In other words, they impede the most valuable rural areas, too. AJ Could someone buy all the channel 51 stations, shut them down and use them as guard bands? Also, how did everyone miss this ch 51 issue? If the FCC knew about it, why even auction A block? Is the FCC doing something to deal with this issue?
  5. It depends... I doubt AT&T would be happy, but at this point, Apple is powerful enough to dictate terms to AT&T, not the other way around. If there are truly A interference issues, it'll have to be Band 12+17 on same iPhone.
  6. The only place where T-Mobile really needs 700 A is rural areas, areas mostly unencumbered by 700 A interference issues. Could tmobile get an iphone with LTE Band 12?
  7. To the contrary, TMO is greatly helped as it doesn't need urban 700; it needs rural 700.
  8. Dish needs a deployment of their AWS-4 holdings ASAP. How would Clear help? Their network only covers 130million.
  9. No, they won't. Ever. Never, ever, ever! Clearwire is Sprint's differentiator. No other carrier will have so much spectrum. If Sprint goes for Tmobile, they'll just be similar in AWS holdings to Verizon; how will that deliver a knockout to the Duo? Sprint already has enough mid-band spectrum. Go in the DL section and you'll see an excel that lists markets in which Sprint can already launch a second 5x5 PCS LTE right NOW. Verizon got good mileage from 20MHz at 700MHz spacing so imagine how long Sprint can go with 20MHz at 1900MHz spacing. Verizon won round one, the coverage battle, but capacity is round two. Sprint needs a little more 600MHz (about 10MHz) to augment its motley SMR and Clearwire.
  10. Does it make sense for TMUS to upgrade to HSPA+84 and higher? Or are they hoping their HSPA+ customers all upgrade their phones to LTE so that they can upgrade even PCS, Band 2/25, to LTE?
  11. What about their plans for their AWS spectrum? 1) Sprint doesn't want it 2) FCC won't let Verizon get more 3) US Cellular + Leap already have enough or too much TMUS is the only option but it's also their biggest competitor but . . . if they don't deploy it, they'll have no choice but to sell it to TMUS.
  12. What will ATT's solution be to avoid VZW's current LTE speeds? I'm in metro-Detroit and with two bars on Motorola Razr, I got 1.5 Mbps on VZW LTE. Why would ATT care that they're roaming on TMUS' W-CDMA? Just require that it says "ATT LTE" in top-left corner and . . . everybody's happy. TMUS keeps stating how much space their network has and it's not as if this is a permanent arrangement.
  13. What about this idea: AT&T sells the rest of AWS to TMUS on the condition that TMUS gives it a really nice AWS LTE roaming deal? Meanwhile, ATT builds up its LTE on PCS, WCS. TMUS gets spectrum and short-term revenue while ATT gets to avoid the problems Verizon is/will be facing and cash to fund dividend . . . I mean cash to fund PCS, WCS LTE deployment. Plus, after ATT has built up WCS, PCS LTE, it gets the added advantage of being able to drop Band 4 (AWS) compatibility from its future phones thereby increasing obstacle to its customers from leaving to TMUS in the future.
  14. Real wireless network nerds do not use iPhones. AJ What about the iPhone's SDK precludes having a "full" version of sensorly?
  15. Is it possible the 37k towers are the HSPA/LTE and 14k are the EDGE-only sites? No. Tmo doesn't have anywhere near 37k HSPA+ sites. Not even close. The 36k is the entire Tmo network, pre-merger. Robert via Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta "T-Mobile will be improving approximately 37,000 cell sites over the next 18 months. These upgrades include: Replacing copper lines with fiber optic lines Adding new radios Moving ground equipment to the top of towers Adding new antennas" Doesn't this mean they're gonna have 37k HSPA towers?
  16. Is it possible the 37k towers are the HSPA/LTE and 14k are the EDGE-only sites?
  17. Is this total BS? Analysts: SoftBank could 'walk away' from Sprint following Dish's bid for Clearwire Read more: Analysts: SoftBank could 'walk away' from Sprint following Dish's bid for Clearwire http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/analysts-softbank-could-bail-sprint-following-dishs-bid-clearwire/2013-05-31
  18. In an article, someone suggested that Charlie is only bidding for Clearwire to force Sprint to make a deal with him to host his S-band. This makes sense to me because Clearwire doesn't have a decent network - right? - so it wouldn't make sense for him to buy Clearwire and then still have to spend more money to get more/better infrastructure. Can Sprint currently veto any Clearwire spectrum sales? If yes, then a) Charlie truly is wasting everyone's time and the vocal Clearwire minority shareholders are deluded if they think Charlie's offers should somehow pressure Sprint to increase its offer. However, Sprint did increase its offer. Why? Was it more psychological than anything?
  19. I'm not saying I disagree. I just wonder if he's so obsessed with Dish, cause he founded it, that he wants to "save Dish or go down trying", taking with him Sprint+Clear. Or if he can see that television as a standalone business has no future and no amount of spectrum to prop it up with save it.
  20. Update on my knowledge of TMUS' towers: * Pre-Metro merger, they had a total of 51,000 towers 1) http://www.rcrwireless.com/article/20130507/carriers/whats-next-t-mobile-us/ * Though they are only upgrading 37,000 (currently planned) 2) http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-5736 So does this mean that they will never be upgrading the last 14k towers that are on PCS EDGE? * MetroPCS had 11,500 towers but TMUS but will "decommission approximately 10,000 of its current 11,500 cell sites at a cost savings of up to $7 billion." 3) http://www.rcrwireless.com/article/20121116/carriers/metropcs-decommission-10000-sites-part-t-mobile-usa-deal/ * Looks like TMUS will indeed wait for 600 MHz to expand coverage to the last 50-60 million "Ray admitted that while the larger players are able to provide coverage to the last 50 million to 60 million pops easier and less expensively due to their lower-band spectrum holdings, the planned auction of 600 MHz spectrum through the incentive auction process could level the playing field." 4) http://www.rcrwireless.com/article/20130517/carriers/metropcs-brand-live-on-focused-urban-markets/
  21. Why would competing with ATT, VZW be incompatible with also doing his video thing? And what about TMUS? lol
  22. How is this different from any company? For example, Apple has $130bil+ in the bank so one can conclude that its products don't have to be that expensive to maintain current level of quality. But has Apple lowered the price of its products for us, its customers? I can understand that more anger may be provoked against infrastructure companies because its customers are more "captive" and because government policies/regulation play a far larger role than in smartphones. However, if the shoe were on the other foot and you or I were CEO of AT&T, we'd would do the same because our bosses would be the shareholders.
