  1. I'm mainly going to be in Detroit but we are thinking of popping over the border for a bit since we've never been to Canada. I don't plan on doing any heavy data but it's good to know I'll have use in case some of those Canadian hooligans decide to accost me and my wife and I need to call ole Dudley Do-Right. Now that I think about it, that's more likely to happen in Detroit than Canada...

  2. Which phone should I get? The galaxy nexus, the Galaxy S 3, or the HTC evo 4g LTE?

That's a hard one to answer for another person. But I'll try to give some input.

If you like something close to a pure Android experience and want to have the best chance of getting OS updates in a timely fashion choose the Nexus.

If you don't mind the Sense skin and you want a great overall device go with the Evo (I am biased as that is what I have).

The Samsung is a beautiful device and by everything I've read the performance is comparable to the Evo in most respects. You probably can't go wrong with the Samsung, especially if you like the design. I have no experience with TouchWiz so I can't comment on that skin.

    There are my two cents.

  3. I will be in the Windsor area of Canada for a short time next week and I want to know if the EvoLTE will work there. Sprint's list of devices that will work doesn't list this phone. It may not have been updated in awhile. Anyone have any experience with roaming in Canada?

  4. After flashing the latest update (firmware and radio) via PJ75IMG -so i didnt get the new HBOOT and loose my S-OFF, my data speeds suffered so much (down to 50-80kbps) so that i had to swap out to use my S3 to have a usable signal. I did a prl and data profile update after flashing the PJ75IMG with no changes, even did several reboots and even wiped all user data to make sure an app wasnt downloading updates or anything. There have also been other people with the same issue. S3 seems do be doing much better pulling in .58mbps (in a basement) Perhaps tomorrow, ill re-evaluate the LTE and see if it was only a temporary problem.

Is there a chance that the PJ75IMG that you used was corrupted in some way? I am not rooted and I took the OTA and I haven't had any degradation and in fact I saw improved speeds in a few areas. Nothing major but noticeably better speed test numbers.

  5. Setting up an Airave is really easy and requires no modification of your main router's settings. No forwarding settings are needed.

Plug the WAN port of the Airave into a LAN port of your main router, that is it.

Do not plug anything into a LAN port of the Airave.

You sometimes will have to reset the Airave, push in the small reset button.

Just for giggles I pulled the Airave out of the garage and tried doing exactly this. No luck. I did the reset as well. Last I looked the lights were showing solid green for Broadband and GPS and blinking amber for Mobile.

  6. Techies are no different than gear heads. To them the unwashed masses are all uninformed sheep because they don't know all the inside specs. The average consumer of any product has little interest in the under the hood stuff. They just want to know if the product will do what they need it to do, when they need it to be done.

I could care less whether my car has 4 valves per cylinder or uses four- channel, four-sensor ABS versus three-channel, four-sensor. I just want to know that it will start, run and stop like I need it to.

4G, LTE, LTE Advanced, HIPDQ++...who really cares what you call it? Bottom line is does the technology satisfy the perceived needs of the consumer?

We spend so much of our time interacting with other tech inclined folks that we forget that we're a small fraction of the total marketplace.

  7. You would think it would be common knowledge for any one who actually took the time to root but every time there is a new OTA there are a million threads asking the same damn question "Uhhh, is it safe for me to update even if I am rooted?". Then of course you have all the season vets saying don't do it, then they do it anyway then you see a lot of new threads popping up asking "when will I be able to get root again"?.......Very annoying!!!

Yeah, that's the funny thing about human nature...it never changes. No matter how many times the waitress tells you to be careful, the plate is very hot; you still touch it the moment she walks away.

  8. Also to add, if you are rooted please do not attempt to download the update, just wait for devs to make the necessary changes so it will be safe.

Edit: Apparently there is a new hboot(1.15.000) so definitely stay away if you are rooted and/or s-off since you will probably lose root access and who knows how long it will take to get root access again.

It should be standard procedure for anyone rooted to NEVER take an OTA for your device. The dev community will usually issue an updated ROM with the OTA fixes within hours of the OTA release.

Did I say NEVER ACCEPT AN OTA IF YOU ARE ROOTED?

  9. I was so excited to start using my new GPS navigation unit that I accidentally left my phone on the desk when I left work. I returned this morning to find that I was still at over 70% battery life. This thing sips power at idle. It's good to know that if I have to be away from a charger for well over a day I can pare down my usage and still have my device available to use as a phone if needed.

  10. Thanks, I am still learning a lot on this site. I have installed NetMonitor & OpenSignal. Still trying to learn them. I was wandering about "OG EVO"? I am assuming the orginal EVO which I had from the day it was introduced.

OG Evo refers to the Evo 4G that was released in 2010...June 4th if I remember correctly.

  11. Have you been using it nonstop for those 2.5 hours?

Sent from my Jelly Bean Toro using Forum Runner

Maybe about 1 3/4 hours total.

Sent from my LG Viper 4G LTE using Forum Runner

Here is a wild idea: maybe you are using your handset too much.

    AJ

So your phone was in use for about 70% of the time it was unplugged and used about a 1/3 of it's battery? Doesn't sound so bad to me. I gotta stand with AJ on this one. Put that thing in your pocket and look around for awhile. Your battery and your neck will thank you.

  12. Thanks for the info guys. I just spoke to the manager's manager through customer service and explained that i need my phone for work. I gave him the whole situation and no results. I was sold a defective phone, im losing my data, service and time to go pick it up an hour away when it actually arrives(probably after the 4th). I was hoping that somebody would of had the authority to release a phone out of inventory or offer a loner phone or anything but i am SOL.

Can you get by with something like a Tracfone for the time being?

  13. My reaction has tempered somewhat upon realizing that it was most likely storm related. As long as my Evo returns to her usual lovable ways then all will be forgotten. That is, unless I find a way to get some of that GS3 "strange"...

  14. I'm hoping that it was related to the storm because I was so disappointed in the service. I can't remember the last time that I had a device fail me so consistently like that.

I'm still getting a dedicated navigation unit. I don't want to worry about data connection when I need directions.

  15. I'm sad to say that this weekend my Sprint cell coverage and my Evo both decided to fail me at critical moments. As you know the DC area was hit hard with storms on Friday evening and since then my cell coverage at home has been even worse than normal. I have been without electricity since Friday night and with digital landline service that means no phone. My Evo has been almost unusable in the house, frequently dropping calls and breaking up during calls. It's been much worse than normal. The 3G coverage has been equally as bad. I was either losing data connection completely or stuck in 1xRTT all weekend.

On Saturday morning my wife and I decided to go for a drive so we headed north to Delaware and then on to Atlantic City. I figured I would get better coverage on the road but no dice. Data was terrible and my navigation was unusable for large stretches of my trip. While in Atlantic City I needed to find an alternate route around some pretty bad traffic and I could not get any route directions. The GPS radio itself seemed to be working but any route information was unavailable. I would lose data connection completely and often would have to reboot the phone to get it back.

If I had needed my phone in a critical situation I would have been in trouble. I am finally seeing what some other folks may be experiencing with their Sprint service. If my experience was anything like what others are getting on a daily basis I can understand the extreme frustration. I figured that major corridors like I-95 and places like Atlantic City would have good coverage. Not so. I also realized that I will have to go back to a dedicated navigation unit as my phone cannot be counted on.

I'm hoping that this was related to the storms and either the system was overwhelmed with users or that it was NV related. Either way I was extremely disappointed with both my device and Sprint for the first time.

  16. NFC Task Launcher is quite a bit more flexible.

You're welcome. They also have a great selection of reasonably priced NFC tags at tagstand.com.

Thanks for these posts! I just downloaded the app and ordered some tags from tagstand to try. :tu:

  17. Those folio cases are awesome looking! At first glance it just looks like your screen is dark. I wanna get one just for that alone. I love my Evo but the GS3 just appeals to me in a visceral, aesthetic way. I get a feeling when I look at it. Especially the pebble blue one.
