  1. Sprint should "accidentally" shut off wimax anyway and the next day bring it back, but at minimum power. When they complain about spotty service, troll the trolls and say wimax doesn't penetrate paper bags or something, and that they should have moved to LTE a couple years ago.

     

    If the Court finds any evidence that Sprint is doing this, it will not go well for Sprint.

     

    What I can't understand is why these schools are on Wireless anyway. No one wants to do a Wireline buildout for them?

    Yes. Because the Court supposedly balanced the merits and sympathized with them over Sprint.

  3. Theres an article from a Kansas City news outlet saying Sprint is being ordered to extend Wimax network coverage in certain areas for 90 days.

     

    Correct. 90 days. Per this News Release as well:

     

    The emergency relief orders Sprint to maintain the WiMax network in certain areas for 90 days to allow Mobile Beacon and Mobile Citizen time to migrate their users to Sprint’s LTE network.

  4. We don't know that. What we do know is that they are backing away from throwing a bunch of money at major deals that left them with nothing to show for the outlay; something we've known for nearly a year with Nascar and nearly a half a year for the NBA.

     

    Indeed: They were throwing tons of money away. What bothered me so much about these costly deals is that they were done in such a vacuum with no respect for ROI, no respect for the overall state of the legacy network and what needed to be done, and no seeming awareness of the mass customer exodus which was occurring. In my opinion, these kinds of initiatives showed total detachment: a complete disregard for the state of the company overall and the employees. I have to guess the running narrative in marketing was: "If we can put our name/logo on the NBA half-time show, or all over NASCAR's Victory Lane, etc. then everyone will believe our network and customer metrics are just fine." No coincidence that the chief marketing guy was shown the door in November 2014 shortly after Marcelo came on board. Thank goodness Marcelo pulled the plug on these things, because stuff like this was sinking the whole ship.

    I'm glad these sponsorships are coming to an end. They just seemed to have very little ROI, especially given the deficiencies in the legacy network. Hey, there's no coverage or slow speeds outdoors at this NASCAR event unless we bring a COW in, but let's plaster our name/logo everywhere for advertising. Same goes for indoor NBA arenas without good speed/coverage or DAS builds that supported Sprint's network. What's the point of plastering your logo everywhere during the half-time show or at the arena when the network isn't up to par?

     

    Thankfully, this spending is being brought under control now. Run a commercial during the game or something, but that's all. Much better off putting it into the macro network or DAS builds like Kauffman Stadium:

     

    With a seating capacity of 37,903, Sprint – a longtime sponsor of the hometown Royals – is the only wireless carrier serving The K with a DAS. Sprint’s extensive system provides voice and data service throughout the entire stadium utilizing all three of Sprint’s spectrum bands (1.9GHz, 2.5GHz and 800MHz).

    So even though the Levi’s Stadium DAS performed exceedingly well — according to Dutto “we turned it on and from day one it exceeded expectations” — and that there wasn’t any capacity problems during the Niners’ 2014 season, the expected impending crush coming in February spurred what Dutto called “carrier-driven upgrades” that included the need to take over some previous storage-room space to house the increased amount of head-end gear.

     

    But even with new head end rooms and extras like under-seat DAS antennas (a new deployment method at Levi’s Stadium for DAS), 20-plus new antenna placements in the parking lot and the accommodation of new 2.5-GHz spectrum for Sprint, Dutto said that the new network was expected to be at least “90 percent complete” before the season’s start.

  6. That guy is an uninformed assclown of a journalist. The issue Sprint has with these backhaul providers is that they are demanding retarded "cancellation" fees for what amounts to some crap tier t1 lines and so the financial cost to Sprint is huge. These companies are also frequently owned by competitors like AT&T and Verizon and Sprint views this as an abusive and unfair advantage. 

     

    In terms of a business example: The building I work at used to be serviced by 5x T1 lines at a cost of over $1000/mo. EACH. A competitor in town built out fiber to our building and AT&T tried to demand that we pay a TRIPLE cost cancellation fee on the remainder of our time and when we refused and simply paid for fiber while also paying for the T1s they (AT&T) then tried to refuse to transfer our landline numbers over to the new servicer. So we went back and forth and eventually got local government involved to fix the situation and the STUPIDEST thing about it was that AT&T HAD FIBER AVAILABLE to the building (as we discovered during the process) but refused to let us change to that service because they made easy money off the T1s. The whole thing was completely asinine and if Sprint is dealing with anything like this it is a small wonder that backhaul is delayed.

     

    Well said. In my opinion, the most egregious thing the author did was say how T-Mobile built its own fiber network to the towers but not actually acknowledge why it did. Of course, acknowledging why T-Mobile did this would have undermined the whole premise of his article to begin with.

  7. I really thought (hoped?) that we'd get more information on NGN on today's earnings call. Aside from that gripe, overall good news. Now, if Sprint can return to profitability, that is the elusive key. #daybyday

     

    Me too. They were pretty mum on NGN. Hopefully the 2H 2015 and 1H 2016 RootMetrics results speak for themselves as Carrier Aggregation is deployed across the country.

     

    Sprint has established a good foundation getting churn down to a record low (The lowest in Sprint's history). Next step is to control/cut costs and keep the quality Postpaid adds coming. The Profits will come.

  8. Glad to see Sprint is on the leading edge when it comes to supporting the advanced features of iOS, but also for an innovative way to always have the latest iPhone.

     

    Marcelo's really pushing the iPhone as far as it can go on Sprint! I'm glad he was able to smooth over the relationship with Apple. Per Marcelo's comments in the Kansas City Star (November 2014):

    Claure has said he spent his first day on the job flying to Apple’s headquarters to meet with CEO Tim Cook because Sprint’s relationship with the iPhone company was “pretty damaged.”

    Now there's: "iPhone Forever"....

    Now there's Band 41 Carrier Aggregation and Band 12 support...

    Now there's enhanced WiFi Calling and Single Number Support.

    From what I can tell, Brightstar basically runs Apple's trade-in program and it can turnaround Sprint's devices from the "Forever" Program,

    And lastly... Sprint Zone's substantial redesign for iOS (Yeah, it's been a while since it was done, but hey, I'll take it, and it works pretty well!)

     

    Great work Marcelo and Sprint people! You've come a long way!

  9. Basically it was a comfy job for someone who was well connected.

     

    Word on the street is there's a ton of jobs just like that in corporate and is one of the reasons why the structure and environment is so shit.
