  1. The article mentions nothing of BRS/EBS.  But never assume that omission automatically indicates negation.  So, basically, we do not know.

And I would not call it a "good" article.  For whatever reason, it feels like a foreigner -- someone not well versed in US sports or wireless -- wrote it.

Look at some of these excerpts:

Levi's Stadium was built just last year; it was not renovated.

Well, I am relieved to know that the DAS supports AMPS.  There are so many analog users left in the Bay Area.

And what the heck are 700SMR, 700PS, and 800PS?  That is not standard terminology.  Or the writer got the bands wrong.

Just noticed this article: DGP upgrades Levi’s Stadium DAS in preparation for Super Bowl 50

Though there was more than enough cabling areas and pathways to make the retrofit easier, Dutto said working around the live events increased the deployment degree of difficulty. But even with new head end rooms and extras like under-seat DAS antennas (a new deployment method at Levi’s Stadium for DAS), 20-plus new antenna placements in the parking lot and the accomodation of new 2.5-GHz spectrum for Sprint, Dutto said that the new network was expected to be at least “90 percent complete” before the season’s start.

Fantastic news on this for Sprint... Could it be two carriers of 2.5 GHz?...

  2. Ill be honest, its going to be a 10x10 sliver at best, plus extremely overpriced. Not to mention the fact that it would take at least 4 years before you can really deploy it properly.

I just don't see it as a viable option for Sprint. If they have found a easy way to leverage wireless backhaul plus C-RAN, I can see them densifying in lower population areas with faster and more cost effective way.

Considering there's a 30MHz Reserve, a 10x10 is most likely to happen from what I can tell. And if they don't get it, they'll likely never have another bite at the apple. In order to have economical rural deployments beyond CCA partnerships, it seems to me that Sprint really needs to do this.

  3. I wonder if anyone had any insights on what he meant by doing backhaul differently and how he plans to speed up that process?

    See here:

"Our engineering experience and our depth of 2.5GHz spectrum give us flexibility, and we expect to utilize various options for deployment of backhaul in order to balance performance, costs and speed to market," Sprint spokeswoman Adrienne Norton told FierceWireless regarding Sprint's backhaul plans. Some analysts have speculated that Sprint will likely use in-band wireless backhaul solutions using the lower 2.5 GHz spectrum band that would not require line of sight.

It'll be interesting to see how they do this.

  4. Tune in today: http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/sprint-ceo-marcelo-claure-to-speak-sept-17-at-goldman-sachs-communacopia-conference.htm

"Chief Executive Officer Marcelo Claure will speak at the Goldman Sachs 24th Annual Communacopia Conference in New York City on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4:35 PM ET. A live audio webcast of this session may be accessed at www.sprint.com/investors. The replay will be available shortly after the actual presentation."

Hopefully some more tidbits on Sprint's progress.

  5. Perhaps the AT&T representative should've spelled out what exactly is misleading about it. Moreover, whether it's misleading or not, that's a choice that the consumer should be allowed to make, not AT&T.

Exactly. Per the last paragraph of the letter (http://newsroom.sprint.com/blogs/sprint-perspectives/an-open-letter-to-our-friends-at-att-and-directv.htm), the next 24 hours should be very interesting. I don't see Marcelo or Kevin backing down.

I have a feeling the FCC/FTC would be interested in this...

  6. I am not writing the full article, only a tech editor sidebar on the tested RF.  The author is Josh -- or Sanjay if Josh does not hop to it.  So, I am not stealing my own thunder, per se, by revealing this.

I have not checked for antenna diagrams.  But they are usually not made public and are relatively useless anyway.  The filings do disclose the antenna gains, however, and the antennas between the two sizes are quite different.  Not to say that the Plus is bad, just that the smaller size appears to be notably better.

    AJ

Looking forward to reading the article and sidebar. I assume the RF performance specs are something that both Apple and Sprint are keenly aware of during the device testing/certification phase?

  7. Sorry for you Plus size fetishists, but you are going to take an RF performance hit.  The smaller handset this year measures notably better.  More to come...

    AJ

That's surprising, especially because the "S" versions are usually tweaked for improved performance.

Really interested to know your take on why this happened. New 7000 series aluminum?

  8. I kind of want this upgrade just for the LTE support.. I'm on everything data family halfway through my contract on my 6 plus. If I switched to iPhone forever and turned in some cheap smartphone (I have plenty) would it be $15 or $5 (loyalty discount)? If it's $5 I'd go for that immediately.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm in the same situation but one year in on a two year contract on an Unlimited My Way Family Plan with 5 lines... I have a 128GB iPhone 6. What are my upgrade options?

Sprint seemed to indicate on the My Account page that I qualified for a lease upgrade for a new device. However, what's the Loyalty Credit amount, and does this make sense to do? Would appreciate thoughts. Thanks!
