  1. I wonder when the iPhone 7 get the update...will it just be a carrier settings update or bundled with the next iTunes update?

    Good question.

Whatever it is, they're running short of time to have it done for the Inauguration on the 20th.

Of course it should be released after thorough testing, but I guess what bugs me about it is that Sprint's press release (http://newsroom.sprint.com/blogs/sprint-perspectives/sprints-dc-network-ready-to-support-a-great-american-tradition-the-presidential-inauguration.htm) talks about 3CA sites and 3CA COWs and it's unclear to me what the point is of having those unless there are updates to additional 3CA capable devices so they can utilize it as well.

The inauguration isn't going to be overrun with HTC Bolt (which already has 3CA live on it) users as far as I know.

    Am I missing something here?

  2. Have we confirmed that though? Based on the logs we discussed on the local thread, I don't know if we can confirm a third carrier is live in the District.

Sprint's Press Release is pretty emphatic about 3CA being live on sites for the Inauguration and 3CA COWs being brought in. Either it's doing a "press release" deployment, or it's really happening...

Sprint still has 10 days to light up 3CA and push an update to 3CA-capable devices. It's cutting it pretty close though by now.

  3. With the Presidential inauguration coming up and Sprint touting 3xCA, will phones get update prior to the inauguration?

We can only hope. Sprint has deployed 3CA on sites in DC. Sprint is also bringing 3CA COWs for additional capacity.

Hopefully there's a peripheral benefit for 2CA devices from the third carrier being deployed.

  4. So are we just going to ignore that a large part of T-Mobile's projected coverage map is U.S. Cellular roaming? All you have to do is look at places like Maine to see that the coverage overlap is 1:1.

Doesn't Sprint roam on US Cellular as well?

Combine it with this article: "U.S. Cellular hopes Trump administration ups USF spending"

    (Link: http://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/u-s-cellular-hopes-trump-administration-ups-usf-spending)

.... and US Cellular is forever destined to be where it is in the market... which seems to suit the owners just fine.

"But there's always 2015. Verizon will begin work next month on a new distributed antenna system for Verizon customers to be completed early next year or, perhaps, in late December. Officials with Sprint, which manages the DAS now used by all carriers, say that system also is scheduled for upgrades."

  6. Sprint's DC Network Update for the Inauguration:

    http://newsroom.sprint.com/blogs/sprint-perspectives/sprints-dc-network-ready-to-support-a-great-american-tradition-the-presidential-inauguration.htm

Sprint says that for 12 months its team has been on the ground working hard to add additional network coverage and capacity in preparation for January 20.

Sprint says it's doubled the capacity of its 1.9 GHz cell sites around the National Mall and DC Metro stations.

Sprint is also using carrier aggregation on its 2.5 GHz cell sites for even faster data speeds on capable devices.

Sprint says it's using two- and three-channel carrier aggregation on 2.5 GHz cell sites in the area, and bringing in Cells On Wheels (COWs) with three-channel carrier aggregation to provide additional temporary capacity at various high-traffic locations extending from Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol.

Sprint says these efforts cap off two years of extensive work by the team in D.C. lighting up new cell sites, adding more capacity with additional spectrum and new technologies such as carrier aggregation and antenna beamforming, as well as optimizing the performance of each and every cell site along the way.

Sprint also says the team invested heavily in D.C. ahead of Pope Francis’ visit 16 months ago, including upgrading the wireless systems within many high-traffic public venues across the area.

So we'll see how it goes. Hopefully more devices receive an update so they can actually access 3xCA.

I'm guessing the 2xCA sites are more likely to be the Dual Mode Clearwire Gear and the 3xCA sites are replacement upgrades?

3xCA COWs? Didn't know Sprint had these. Would Sprint be using microwave backhaul for it?

  7. It would be nice if sprint had excellent LTE service during CES by bringing extra capacity online. Hopefully that is more of the focus instead of handing out uber coupons.

Fortunately, Sprint has signed onto the DAS at the Convention Center.

    From December 2015: http://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/cox-business-gains-at-t-sprint-sign-to-its-las-vegas-convention-center-das

More in the Press Release linked to in the article.

  8. Just looking forward to sprints big announcement next week... hopefully regarding VoLTE or simultaneous voice and data at least like the other carriers

Marcelo is speaking at a Conference on January 5th: http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/sprint-ceo-marcelo-claure-to-speak-jan-5-at-citis-2017-internet-media-and-telecommunications-conference.htm

  9. Link that shows they have a network announcement next week ???

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This was the Network announcement for the 2013 Presidential Inauguration:

    http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/sprint-prepares-its-network-for-2013-presidential-inauguration.htm (January 10, 2013)

It's interesting to see where the Sprint network was at that point in time. Perhaps a similar announcement will be made in the coming weeks based on prior timing.

  10. I'm sure they will do something yuuugggeeee lol

Lol. It would be nice if Sprint was able to activate a third carrier for both the DC area network and push the update for it additional devices (iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy S7) before January 20th.

Sprint's on much more solid network footing now. WiMAX was finally shut down earlier this year and Sprint has been able to swap out the old gear with new LTE equipment.

I'm really curious to see what Sprint's "Network" announcement will be for the inauguration. Hopefully a lot of progress has been made on the D.C. network?

  11. I have yet to observe third carrier in the DC market, which I'm pretty sure is an ALU market. Wonder when it will go live.

    - Trip

It would be nice if the third carrier was live in time for the Presidential Inauguration on January 20th, especially given the huge influx of people to the DC Area for it.

Curious to hear what Sprint's preparation plans are for it: COWs, etc.

Here's what Sprint did back in 2013:

Sprint Prepares its Network for 2013 Presidential Inauguration

Given the timing of the prior announcement (January 10, 2013), perhaps an update on this will be published in the coming week(s).

  12. "Three-channel carrier aggregation (3CA) is already available in more than 100 markets today and we’ll continue..."

Didn't know 3CA is available in 100+ markets...that's news to me

Sprint's Network Vision project enabled this to happen. The strong foundation is there from it. This is the power of new modular equipment, contiguous spectrum and pushed software upgrades to the tower sites.
  13. Quick question:

When I look at OpenSignal Sprint's 3g/lte map, its coverage map is about 20% more extensive than Tmobile's 3g/lte map. But upon removal 3g from the map, Sprint's lte coverage is slightly less than tmobile's. Is it fair to say that many Sprint's towers are still 3g and not yet converted to lte? If that is true, what are the reasons for not having these sites converted to lte? lack of backhaul, equipments?

Sprint's map has apparently been quite conservative in displaying its 800 MHz spectrum coverage.

Sounds like a change on that is in the works.

  14. That's exactly what I was getting at.

However, there's no way to know if the same announcement would have happened had there been a different election result.

Sprint would probably try to work with any administration to make its business more competitive. Of course, the question is how much of Sprint's outreach is reciprocated by the administration.

  15. Marcelo just tweeted:

    https://twitter.com/marceloclaure/status/814537972653625344

"The 5,000 jobs are NEW jobs that @Sprint is creating or bringing back to the U.S. Great news for the country."
