  1. So first day in and I must say, I'm enjoying my 6 tremendously. I didn't even hesitate about not getting a 6 Plus. The 6 is right for me. My right thumb just reaches the top corners of the screen so the golden one-hand theorem still applies.

I'd have thought I'd be more accurate with typing off the bat but it's not the case. I guess my brain is learning all over again with the slight key offset.

My wife still has a 5S, of course, and has asked when she's getting her upgrade. ;) Using a 5S now feels slow - I don't know how - which doesn't make sense as the A7 professor was a dragon slayer.

I'm of course using the camera many times a day and enjoying it. I can't tell the difference just yet but my wife thinks the images are sharper. The big thing for me, which leaves me feeling giddy, is the fact that I didn't go for the 64GB but the 128GB titanic. Super awesome. I upgraded my iCloud storage plan to 200GB when the new plans launched some time ago, so no issue there.

Edit: the LTE modem also appears to be more adept than the 5S. On my carrier, the 5S would go into limp mode if LTE was turned on. Essentially my carrier isn't approved by Apple yet. On the 6, while LTE still isn't officially approved, everything is working well and I'm getting some awesome speeds.

  2. Yesterday my iPhone 5S got damaged, and with the warranty swapout taking 7 days, I got a new iPhone 6 128GB.

Pretty quickly I noticed the quality control on the phone wasn't great? Where the aluminium band meets the glass it isn't seamless. It's as if the aluminium chipped while being cut. Pretty disappointed to see this. Anyone else?

  3. Had this weird thing happen. I guess when I turned on iCloud photos beta on myiphone, it decided to delete my iCloud backup...so I turned it off and checked my back up from last night and it was only 1.6 gb, which obviously doesnt make sense because I have like 7 gb of photos.

So I turned it on and off and I think? its now backing up my photos...that's pretty annoying because I would be very irritated if I had lost those since I don't regularly sync to iPhoto. Anyways, we will see.

Thanks for this. Been wondering about flicking that Beta switch. Now there's no way. 8,300 photos and counting.

  4. /Resurrect!

    So far I have this:

    And this:

As for what's going on the Weber grill, it'll be beef fillet steak (marinaded) and what we call boerewors (sausage of sorts). Then also BBQ toasted sandwiches.

    Edit: coming along nicely...

  5. Ugh. So the SIM tool changed. It's now smaller and round. I used the old "standard" one not having any idea it had changed and graunched the metal. :(

Just sold my iPad 4 and when putting everything together, I checked for the SIM pin tool. Imagine my surprise when I saw the "newer" rounded one was already sold with the iPad 4. Oops. :(

  6. Very recently our baby carrier pipped the big guns and pushed out LTE-A on some of their towers. The media spec says 150Mbps capability (but of course we know this to be 1Gbps on paper).

The only issue for now is that our carriers are concentrating heavily on profitability. This comes to the detriment of users living in the ordinary burbs, not Beverley Hills equivalent. The short of it: my area is not getting the LTE-A upgrade. :(

In doing some digging, our largest carrier has live LTE-A results from as early as September 2014 but is not making a huge media hype about their capability yet. I saw screenshots of 312Mbps. Holy bat balls!

  7. Luckily it really is just the little pin hole that got damaged. I'd like to order a new SIM tray to restore order. :(

Here's the two SIM tools side by side. The old square pin damages the pin hole in the SIM tray.

Another thing I've just noticed. The new charger is 10W compared to 12W on my iPad 4. Anyone able to explain this, as well as implications of using 12W?

  8. Picked up my white Air 2 64GB LTE+Wi-Fi at 2pm today. Got a 10% discount off the iStore price through my company. Sweet.

Now to camp till midnight so I can switch to my unused "midnight" mobile data to do an iCloud restore.

  9. Yes! Launched in South Africa yesterday. No announcement. Our carriers didn't even know it was out and have no plans for it. Rather than wait for the carrier plans to be published, I'm gonna buy cash and do a trade-in deal on my iPad 4 64GB LTE+Wi-Fi.

    Whoop.

  10. I've noticed a real slowdown with my iPad 4 which is hard to imagine as it hasn't been that long...has it? I used an iPad Air recently and could tell it was hugely faster. I cannot wait for my Air 2. :) I also just upgraded to a 200GB iCloud storage plan so I'm locked and loaded...

  11. I just wanted to drop an apology here due to my hiatus...I never intended to be a "one post wonder". My other love has always been wireless and I'm currently involved in quite a few Ubiquiti projects; as such, I'm on a bit of a break from cellular.

  12. I'll have to do some digging for you. My gut feel is that it's going to be hellish expensive. I haven't heard of a single good roaming experience to date. Vodacom are also (in)famous for out-of-bundle charges.

Regards obtaining the SIM card, our country clamped down on untraceable crime and cellphones. This resulted in RICA (Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-related information Act) being born. An ID (or passport) and proof of address have to be submitted. I'm not sure how this is handled for anyone outside of our country.

  13. Why wouldn't Sprint offer limited availability MIMO devices to customers in this situation? With traffic shaping and a little QoS for various services, why wouldn't it be a sustainable business opportunity considering LTE is more spectrally efficient.

Perhaps team up with Ubiquity or Mikrotik to come up with some inexpensive home base stations for these types of use scenarios. Though I'm not sure how well the MIMO setup would work if you were in a situation that required an external antenna on a pole to get service.

    We can dream, right? :)

I'm not sure about the companies in the US but the big name here and in Europe is Poynting. I know they have resellers in the US too.

This is my game and I have lots to share on this. :)
