  1. Small update: I'm getting 4-5 hours use with Background Refresh permanently off. I've also noticed battery drain at night e.g. 13% left when I turn in and the phone is dead when I wake up.

I'm really starting to struggle. Today I stated work at 9am and by 2pm my phone had died.

Can other 6S users please post screenshots of their battery usage? This will give me more ammo when I go back to my local Apple store.

  2. I've now turned off Background Refresh permanently for testing. It made no difference. I'm continuously getting 6 hours standby and 4 hours usage...

Do I return the phone *again* or just resign myself to crappy battery life until I can't stand it anymore and upgrade?

  3. At the current U.S. exchange rate, the equivalent of $561. (Sounds expensive, I know)

A Mini 4 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular would have cost me $791 so stuck to the Mini 2. I was also keen to stick to the old Home button as my boy already "broke" the TouchID button on my iPhone.

  4. Somewhat of a resurrection but 2Y later and LTE-A is showing up as "active" all over. In fact, my street is not too far out of the zone.

We're not seeing a lot of crazy speeds, yet; people that are lucky enough max out at 100Mbps.

This didn't stop me from upgrading my B593 LTE CPE to the E5186 LTE-A CPE. :P Hoping for records one day soon...

  5. Today I finally got a Mini. I sold my Air 2 earlier this week as I stopped using it altogether and sold my wife's iPad 4 today (a declutter exercise but that's a different story).

In place of the 9.7" I got the family's first 8" iPad. I opted not to go for the big daddy iPad Mini 4 but instead got a more modest Mini 2.

The Mini 2 had a massive saving over the Mini 4 but didn't have a 64GB option being an EOL device. I decided that that was OK and we'd make it work. Space Gray was the colour choice of the day!

The new Mini immediately went into a Griffin Survivor All-Terrain case for the necessary kiddy protection. My son was soon swinging it around with one hand and quite OK with it...I think it'll prove a good choice in years to come!

  6. I didn't find a topic about this but I'm sure it's something most Apple users have experienced: charging cables that disintegrate at the ends.

I refuse having to spend hard-earned dollars on a new cable and I'm not a fan of third-party ones either. The solution? The super awesome Dremel Versatip and 6.9mm heat shrinkable tubing. It's just a pity that I couldn't get white tubing as it is listed as an available colour on the packaging.

I wonder when Apple is going to solve this problem? It's a non-issue with the micro USB charging cables out there.

  7. Earlier this year when I got a replacement for my 6s Plus I ended up with a Samsung chip and haven't noticed much difference in battery compared to the TSMC chip I had in my first one. I think it was overhyped. In fact, overall I think this phone stays cooler than my first one.

I also don't think there's any difference. Often I have to remind myself that I got a new (TSMC) replacement because the battery just doesn't last...

Edit: does this seem OK to you guys?

  8. I'm also set up with a family account and registered an email address for my boy as soon as Apple allowed it (A-men to that).

I haven't seen that Apple market the Mini for kids but the more I think about it, it's a device for kids. Those small hands...

Now to just buy one...at the same cost as the Air 2! :(

  9. So I've almost crossed this bridge several times but always stop short. Last time I heard rumors of the Mini going end-of-line. That doesn't seem to be true anymore with yet another new model set to be announced next month. (Mini 5?)

My 3-year old loves using his mom's iPad (and mine for that matter). His mom's is an older (but serviceable) iPad 4 but it's rather heavy. I'm wondering if an iPad Mini isn't just the "right" device for those little hands...

Of course it would still need to serve Pinterest, YouTube and e-mail duty for mom. My son primary uses the YouTube Kids app and the Videos app for a half-dozen iTunes movies favorites.

We are not iPhone Plus users so the phablet debate doesn't apply...

    Anyone had similar ideas?

  10. So, I did a fresh install as well as an iCloud restore (similar results). Battery performance didn't improve but I've had no further incidents of the phone shutting down at 20%. I've since become aware of someone else with an iPhone 6 that has also seen shutdowns at 20%...so maybe that's a bug.

Ignoring the 20% thing, battery performance is really poor. As in charging morning, noon and evening.

I took my phone in to an iStore and they ran a diagnostic test and all tests passed...including battery. They are now doing subjective tests to reach a decision...

What sort of battery life are you guys getting?

  11. Thanks for the suggestions.

I've never done anything special for the sake of battery life so starting now seems off.

The other odd thing is that my phone often switches off at 20% battery indicating it's proper flat. Plug it in, comes back up and starts charging from 20%...

  12. A bit more on topic ...

I've owned my iPhone 6S 64GB for 8 months now. In the last month I've started to experience appalling battery levels.

Before then I was getting a full day and I was happy. Now, I often find my battery empty at the most inconvenient times.

I'm posting screenshots to show no low signal flags and, secondly, battery drain.

Are there any known recall programs in the U.S. for this type of problem?

  13. Hey friends. I know I've been scarce and I apologise. I've been more busy with PtP wireless again and not much mobile broadband.

There's been a massive push with LTE-A in my country of late. The availability maps are just lighting up.

With the above in mind, and my A1688 CAT6 iPhone 6S, is there any way to know *for sure* that I'm on an LTE-A connection?

  14. I successfully made the switch. Used up a lot of mobile data but it had to be done. I dread syncing my iPhone and then each device re-syncing!

I've chosen to have photos "optimized" on my device. The only issue here is that photos are only cached when viewed. This messes up sharing from other apps which just can't grab the photo e.g. Telegram and Hangouts. The workaround is to share photos from the Photos app outwards and not use apps to "fetch" photos.

    Aloha.

Man, I regret going with the "Optimise iPad Storage" iCloud Photo Library setting. I use a 60Mbps LTE connection and always have to wait for photos to cache to my iPad from iCloud. Severely irritating. Apps still can't request photos to cache so you can't share optimised photos.

I've switched to the "Download and Keep Originals" setting but in doing so, I'm outta space. Had to delete all my games; all my big apps; all my music; all my iTunes movies. Gah!!!

How are you guys finding the Optimise iPad Storage setting in the U.S.? I really advise against using it, especially if you have lots of self-made videos. Accessing those is a wait-a-thon of note.
