  1. The team over at Cyanogen Mod has officially released their CM9 nightly builds for 3 devices. The Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and XOOM Tablet.

    http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly

To find your device, just go to the CM9 source page and grab the one associated with your device's nickname. For easy reference:

    • Samsung Galaxy Nexus CMDA = toro
    • Nexus S CDMA = crespo4g
    • Morotola XOOM WiFi = wingray
    • Motorola XOOM CDMA/LTE = stingray

  2. I don't know if Sprint can raise that kind of capital right now though. They are stretched pretty thin already. If they could start making money off selling clearwire's service retail or wholesale, it might be worth it. I think it is only a matter of time before Sprint buys clearwire though.

  3. I think that if they took a small step to educate consumers about the benefits of wifi, more people would use it.

Frankly, the average consumer doesn't want to deal with it. They want something simple.

    1) At the point of sale, it should be explained in person or over the phone the benefits of wifi.

    2) With every phone there should be a seperate printed sheet of paper that explains the benefits of setting up wifi on your phone.

    3) Send text reminders to customers who do not setup their home wifi.

    4) Other incentives should also be provided (monitary, prizes, discounts, blah blah blah)

But for Verizon and att once a customer is on tiered they stop caring because it makes them money on overage

  4. I don't believe Verizon is staying true to the "Verizon Wireless will reduce speeds as minimally as possible, for as little time as possible based on geographic network load."

First they said that they only throttle on 3G then they said as minimally as possible, but I know someone on the grandfathered unlimited plan and once he hits 5 GB on LTE he is throttled the rest of the billing cycle. I forget what he is throttled to, but as soon as the first day of his billing cycle rolls around, he is back to around 30 mbps.

  5.

There are a bunch of apps like that for android that people use.

Problem with the dummy light idea is in order to do that you have to leave WiFi on and scanning and even if done in intervals that process kills battery life and is something users won't be happy about...

Wi-Fi actually uses less battery on my phone than the mobile network. Not when there isn't a Wi-Fi connection though. If there was a program to periodically check throughout the day if Wi-Fi was available maybe...

  6. From my understanding Tegra 3 is not that impressive of chip, Qualcomm and TI are showing off dual core chips that spank quad core Tegra 3 in almost every category. I could be getting confused because I am at work and won't do any extensive fact checking, but this is what I remember being shown over the last few weeks from ARM chip makers on other websites like anandtech, the verge, etc

They are beating the A9 quad core in benchmark tests. I have not seen them go up against the Tegra 3. I have heard that the GPU leaves something to be desired on the Tegra 3 which surprises me because it's NVIDIA...

  7. Released, sure - but announced by a carrier?

I can't think of a device that was announced by a carrier and took six months to get to market. Any history buffs here?

I agree this is different than an international model/US model delay. It's not even a GSM/CDMA delay. The only thing they HAD to change from Verizon's Nexus was the frequencies of the radios. Shouldn't take this long. There has to be something else holding it up.

  8. How about a dummy light like in your car. Ding, hey dummy, WiFi is available here...

On another note, on the wife's RAZR MAXX, there is a program that you can set it to turn on WiFi at certain geographical locations. There is a bunch of other stuff it can do, but WiFi kills the battery on that phone more than LTE, so it's nice to be able to turn it off most of the time and save her battery.

  9. Clearwire setup and Sprint Network Vision setup are completely different. Sprint was going to use the network vision work to set up Lightsquared's network for them, but they are dead in the water. Clearwire will still be up and running in those cities until 2015.

As far as which cities Sprint is picking for Network Vision... I'm sure they have a reason for it, maybe they are tackling the biggest cities first so they can boost phone coverage. I know that Network Vision looks like it is purely data, but in this day, people will not tolerate dropped calls, so they need to bolster capacity and dead spots to keep customers.

And it is obvious that Wimax no longer sells. It has been downgraded in customer eyes to being in a class with HSPA+ and although T-Mobile is throttled, it is still unlimited. Sprint needs LTE up and running in the big cities to draw customers.

From what I have seen so far, Sprint's buildout of Network Vision buildout makes a heck of a lot more sense than Clearwire's.
