  1. FYI, I pushed another update to the apk a couple of days ago that changes a couple of things; most notably it now hides information that's absent, reducing screen clutter on triband devices or when you don't have LTE. I expect in the next update to do a better job of sorting the LTE neighbor cells list and I may also swap out Leaflet.js for the new Mapbox slippy map API for Android (mostly because it's silly to be running a browser window + JavaScript when it could all be just native Java with ART goodness) if I can get it to work sensibly without too much pain. There probably won't be many more features after that; mikejeep's excellent SignalCheck Pro scratches most of my other itches, and I have other projects I probably should work on (both professionally and hobby-wise). Anyway, have fun with it!
  2. adb tip: If you are going to use adb sideload, the stock recovery doesn't go into sideload mode automatically. Once you're at the screen that says "No command," you have to hold the power button, quickly press "volume up," and release both to get the recovery menu, then select the sideload option. You should then have two lines of text at the bottom of the screen that say that you can now use adb sideload. Which then you can do. tl;dr version: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-nexus-tablet-kitkat Also, the full factory image doesn't work on a locked phone. You have to adb sideload the OTA zip, or wait to win the OTA lottery.
  3. Are you using a current version of adb? Some older versions (such as the one in Debian Linux) don't support the 'sideload' command.

  9. I still think it's a bad idea. I think Son is dangerously overselling what he can deliver in terms of fixed and mobile wireless broadband, particularly given that buying T-Mobile doesn't give him much additional footprint. As for Charlie Ergen and Dish, while they may make a fixed broadband play with whatever Sprint is forced to divest, I don't see mobile broadband or voice service happening, unless Sprint or T-Mobile is also forced to divest some WCDMA-compatible spectrum. But I guess we'll see either way.

  11. Don't forget that Sprint also wouldn't have gotten nationwide PCS block G without the Nextel merger. It's not huge spectrum-wise but it ensured Sprint had ample space to roll out LTE without removing any 1x and EVDO carriers. That said I do think they should have cut bait on iDEN several years earlier. The PTT crowd might have even tolerated the switch more since everyone's non-iDEN PTT sucked eggs then.

  14. In Atlanta, it's almost certainly eCSFB; I was having the same issue with band 26 enabled on I-285. If it was "donut mode," you probably wouldn't be able to hold the connection between towers in LTE-only mode. Now if you've flashed .15 and you're still dropping to 1X/EVDO, then I don't know what the problem is. And since .15 is unsupported, nobody's going to try to fix it. (Heck, band 26 is unsupported on any released radio. There's a reason it's not enabled by default...) In theory, if it's affecting everyone with tri-band devices, Sprint's automatic network monitoring should catch the falloff in LTE traffic and kick Ericsson to investigate and fix eCSFB on those band 26 sites. Or you could always tweet @sprintcare.
  15. Considering it's still May, we have no experience how the throttle will work in practice, just speculation (some informed, much not informed). My guess/informed speculation is that throttling won't really be noticeable (unlike the experience of going over the T-Mobile prepaid hard cap, which kills rather than throttles all Google Play downloads, VPNs, and most other non-web traffic completely) except for video streaming, where it probably depends on who's doing the streaming. I'd imagine mainstream services like YouTube and Netflix will still work but at lower resolution, since they have the engineering resources to deal with all sorts of congestion issues, while your Ukrainian cam girl's feed will cope poorly. 16. And Blacksburg too. That said I get the feeling that nTelos generally goes after the "townie" population rather than students; these days most students are on their parents' plan from a major carrier. At least in Blacksburg they didn't seem to market themselves to students much. So really the lack of LTE affects the wholesale side in college towns more than nTelos' retail operation.

  22. I've had pretty good experiences in Houston County generally, and in Perry proper. If you take a look at Sensorly you should see a pretty representative map of coverage in the area (the maps on Sprint's site are rather wildly optimistic).

  24. .23 works with band 26 if you have it enabled using *#*#DATA#*#*, although in my experience the fallback to band 25 is flaky (this may be an Ericsson thing rather than a Nexus 5 thing, though, from what I've read in other threads).
