  1. I got 4G at home today in ,Mount Prospect, for the first time (between Golf and NW Highway just west of Rt 83). Had 5MB upload and 4MB download. Then it all stopped, so hopefully they are testing things out and it will be permanent.

So, when Sprint announces 4G in the Chicaog market, will they turn on all the towers at that point? It's a bit frustrating having 4G come and go.

When Sprint announces Chicago, most likely only about 60% of the towers will be completed. It will take until December or early January for the market to be completed. Any tower that is completed is being released into the public so far as we can tell, so announcing the market won't change anything if you still aren't getting a signal. Only when the towers nearest you are completed will the signal finally settle down.

  2. At some point in the near future, any tower that is complete should be activated, if they follow the trend in SF, Chicago, and Boston. So if you don't have LTE in the next few days, likely this means there are no towers completed in your area, and an official "launch" isn't going to change anything. In areas which have been soft launched such as LA, the trend has been for Sprint to release towers into the wild right away, with limited exceptions.

  3. Are other people having problems with Sensorly? I am unable to connect to their web site on multiple computers using multiple browsers, nor on my GS3 using Dolphin. When I run the mapping app on my phone, it counts points (Yay! I'm getting tiny amounts of LTE on the south side of Crystal Lake, IL!), but never updates points on the map, nor does it appear to transmit results. Anyone have any insight???????

I would assume they are having a problem. I haven't been able to visit the site for a day now. I don't know if this would be affecting the upload of collected data or not.

  4. I noticed lte dropped about a mile away. Considering there were no obstacles in the way, I thought that was weird.

Most likely it is due to the downtilt on the cell, in areas that have a denser population, the cells are tilted more in order to maximize capacity rather than maximize range. This will cause each cell to have a small footprint, but there are likely a large number of cells in the area.

  5. The location of the upgrades have nothing to do with socioeconomic status, device saturation or market size. It's simply the first tower to have completed backhaul, and have all the pieces in place. Sprint is not picking certain sites over others, it just the order in which they are physically able to complete the upgrades. Do no read into the locations of upgraded towers, because there is nothing there.

  6. I pick it up more and more places but I'm really thinking there's a problem with the EVO. There's threads on xda about it. Even when I pick it up at my house, usually by forcing lte only or airplane mode the speed has been bad. I used to get 10+ down and just now I got .57 Mbps down tethering to my laptop with a -108 signal. I'd like to test out another phone to see if its the tower or my phone.

Normally, a speed like that would be attributed to a very weak signal. However, if you are getting that speed with that signal (which is fair, not great but not poor) than it may be an issue with the tower. I would try a different tower and see if you still get that result.

The issues with the EVO LTE have been discussed extensively on this site, it is well acknowledged that there is an issue. Once all of the towers are completed, it should be less noticeable.
