  1. Sigh.. I'll quote the relevant parts for you guys..

Neal is the S4GRU for the other carriers...

Yeah, I saw that, but it still reads like some kind of code to me. Some sounds like really bad news for Sprint, some sounded like bad news for nTelos subscribers and not so much for Sprint.

If they use Sprint's frequencies and not their own (is that even possible?), that sounds like it's OK for us.

Would someone have the patience to do the tech translation?

    Thanks!

    David

  2. More (non?)-info from yesterday. We were having issues with family and friends who are out of state not being able to call us. They were getting the "number no longer in service" message. So I stopped in the Sprint franchise repair store and was told it was a network problem. She did the ##72786# reset on my phone. (Didn't help) So, I asked about whether this was due to nTelos network upgrades. With with wry smile, she actually told me that we would have Sprint towers in our area. (Thanks to s4gru, I knew she was absolutely making this up.)

So I then went to the corporate store to see my buddy there. According to him, an nTelos switch was out and they're working on it. He has a friend in an nTelos call center (yeah, I know) who says that Sprint techs are working alongside nTelos crews in the network upgrades. He said that they're having to switch out the legacy Motorola hardware, and that "they've learned their lesson" from Richmond's eCSFB issues. According to them, the timeline is 3G NV here in October, and 4G rollout is November.

    More hope, little substance . . .

  3. I dropped into an nTelos store today to ask about 4G implementation in Central Va.  (Insert all the usual caveats here)  I was told that it would be "the first of the year" for C'ville.  I then said I was a Sprint customer, and was interested in when Sprint folks would have access.  She admitted that is not yet available in any market in which they have deployed 4G, saying that "depends on their agreement".  I should note that her examples of 4G markets were Richmond, Va Beach, and Harrisonburg.  I pointed out that there was native Sprint service in those places, so I was not concerned with those markets.  She looked at me funny, and reiterated the statement regarding "their agreement".

Just a big 'ole (worthless?) FYI for everyone.

  4. Mashed the button a lot and it seems to have helped, but I want to avoid pressing it as much as possible until I can get a temporary replacement. Anyone know of any good apps that will let me tap the screen to turn on the phone? Tried some basic one off of the Play Store but didn't have any luck.

I've enjoyed Gravity Screen, which uses the proximity sensor effectively and the orientation sensor.
  5.

nTelos - Sprint customers in nTelos land would probably rejoice if Sprint acquired them! Again their network and spectrum holdings would dovetail nicely into Sprint's. However, I think a well run nTelos could be a strong regional if it wisely partners with Sprint, T-Mobile (who also lacks coverage in much of that area), and Dish (for fixed broadband) while still retaining a core group of local subscribers.

I certainly agree that a Sprint acquisition of nTelos could result some rejoicing. HOWEVER, a "well run nTelos" is, IMO, a real long-shot. It appears that they had to be strong-armed into updating to 4G long after NV got started.

  6. I'll echo what lazydog said above.  We've been on an unlimited data family plan for years.  It's now called "Everything Data - 1500 Shared Anytime Minutes" on the bill.  Our manager rep also said in an email to me, "Customers on existing unlimited data plans will be grandfathered in indefinitely."

Given the uncertainty of keeping unlimited data being done away with (given the usual caveats mentioned above), I'm inclined to stick with what we've got.  We could switch to 40 Gigs at what we pay now (or "downgrade" to save some $), but then we're on the slippery slope of no more unlimited data in the future.
