  1. What do you see under "Change My Plan"....

The Sprint Website is a disaster for legacy content.

    You dont say!

I was just on the phone with customer support for 40 minutes....

In January, we purchased a 2-year upgrade iPhone for $299.

Credit card gets charged ~$350 after taxes. Great! Transaction finished!

So now we get bill showing a $299 equipment charge. OH NO YOU DIDNT. Why are we being charged twice?

Well, turns out the $350 credit card charge, which was for the new phone and taxes was actually charged against the bill before autopay could come in. It in turn cancelled autopay and resulted in a negative balance.

Then the full month + the iphone showed up on the new bill.

The total adds up, but WTF are you doing Sprint accounting!

  2. Im still amused at how Sprint decided to end the subsidies and move people to leases which in turn freed people from staying with Sprint.

If Im not stuck on a 2-year contract with a hefty ETF, why WOULDNT I jump to the best available offer on a competitor?

The entire point of contracts and ETFs was to tie people in. From a business perspective, removing the 2-year contract makes no sense.

  3. Anyone else getting more spam calls than ever before in the past few months? I'm beginning to suspect that maybe Sprint has sold our numbers to 3rd party companies or they've been compromised.

It's always random calls with automated machines or a quick ring with no one one the other end at least once every two days. The reason I'm suspecting Sprint being behind this is due to some of the lines on my account receiving automated machines that specifically mention my name (this is a first!). I have never associated my name with any number other than my own on anything I do. The only company that would know that my name is linked to the numbers that have received these calls is Sprint!

So what the hell Sprint?! I do paperless billing, so I doubt someone went through my mail and stole my info and numbers on my account. This is shady as hell and Sprint is the only one that would have known. Fortunately, Google Dialer has a nice way of weeding out Spam numbers, but it still bugging the shit out of me.

Yes I have as well. I dont answer them though.

Some have even come where the first 6 digits are the same as my phone number (area code + first 3)

Especially in the last week. Ive been trying to figure out how they got my number

  4. MetroPCS has now made its $50/5GB plan unlimited (with 480p video and no tethering) to go along with its $60 unlimited plan with 8GB of tethering and HD video. Both prices include taxes and fees.

    Are they prepaid or postpaid?

....And does it even matter these days with BYOD?

The network has improved a lot since Marcelo took over but Sprint seems to have ran out of steam, haven't seen any improvements in a long while now. And there are still some areas that are lacking optimization so you lose service or get stuck on a sliver of useless 3G.

The big sign for me that something was wrong was last November. Sprint had absolutely nothing for Black Friday. Nothing.

  5. If you will, show me where I accounted for leases or installments.  I doubt that I did -- because I want the operators out of the consumer electronics retail business.

This is not popular with many here at S4GRU and elsewhere, but if you have to pay for a phone on installment, you cannot afford it.  You are in over your pay grade and instead should look at less expensive options.

    AJ

I guess the issue is that I was operating based on real world situations - how mobiles were/are sold in Europe and Latin America, and you were operating out of an impossible desire.

As for installments, if the only option is to pay $800 or to pay $800/24 then the most financially prudent option is ALWAYS the installment. Its not about being able to afford something or not, it's about basic money management strategies.

  6. I think it is a fair assessment to say, that for the last more than 2 years non-contract services have been available, and heavily pushed by all the carriers, that a majority of those who are still on 2 year contracts, specifically chose that option.

Thats a very good point. Sprint has pushed non-contract options so heavily that many retail employees would lie to customers about having to switch to a lease or easy pay. I know last year I went to Best Buy to avoid the Sprint employees and even there he insisted on spending 10 minutes "educating" me on the benefits of dropping ED1500 and leasing. Bitch, I have a spreadhseet.

Honestly, the experience was very uncomfortable and if I had more time I would have simply ended the sale and done the transaction online (I was visiting my dad for a weekend and helping him out).

That fact that so many people pushed back is surprising.

That is hyperbole with little, if any substantiation.  Discontinuation of contract subsidy simply unbundles device from service -- and vice versa.  If you want to pay less, buy or lease a cheaper device and cut back your service from "unlimited" data to a tiered plan.  You have those choices available.  But if you are going to use more and more "unlimited" data and continue to buy flagship devices, then, yes, you are going to pay more for at least your "unlimited" data, as you well should.  Prices go up.  That is supply and demand.

The theory was that unbundling would push prices down because people would not want to spend $800, and would look at $400 alternatives.

I pointed out to you two years ago that bunding never existed in Europe, and prices never decreased.

I was right. Leasing/easy-pay hid the true price as well, especially with the carriers falsely claiming that they were offering cheaper plan prices.

The end result is that phones still cost $800, but prices have gone up for plans.

Also, the market for non-flagship phones has essentially collapsed. HTC? Sharp? Sony? Nokia? No one is biting.

It is Apple or Samsung or bust, with Google as a side attraction.

  7. My sister got a 2 year upgrade around the 17th. It was a pain because we were planning on using Costco and it was suddenly ended.

When our contracts end I will take a long hard look at what Verizon, Tmobile and AT&T are providing.

I have been a Sprint customer for around 7 years now. If they are no longer a good value for me and my family, we will move, period.

ED1500 + 2 year contracts were a good value. I do not think the current pricing plans are.

No hard feelings Sprint, but business is business.

But who knows, maybe things will be different. After all, I will be conducting a simple cost benefit assessment between the four companies. Maybe Sprint will still be the best value.

  8. Hm, so Im looking to switch from the global roaming to Open World as I am going on a cruise next week and want to take advantage of the promotion...

    When I go here

    https://www.sprint.com/landings/openworld/index.html?INTNAV=LP:GlobalRoaming:LearnMore

The list of countries does NOT mention the islands.

But they ARE shaded in on the map

Edit: I see on the services add-on menu it is a separate line item that has to be added!

  9. Yes, they're both GSM. It probably would be smart of Sprint just to strike an Open World agreement with TelCell and/or Chippie. While St. Maarten isn't the biggest tourist destination in the Caribbean, I have to imagine that they get a number of customers that accidentally run up huge bills. The problem is exacerbated by the main airport and cruise port being on the Dutch side.

Yup, unless you own a yacht, youre going to arrive on the dutch side, so thats what people think of when they see St Martin.

  10. I was just there in August. Before I left the Open World map showed the entire island as green so it was all covered and I was fine. I noticed when I got back that only the French side was still green and the Dutch side was changed to purple and thus subject to the regular (read:expensive) international rates. There's a few posts about it earlier in this thread.

Even on the Dutch side you can sometimes pick up Digicel from the French side and Flow from wherever. I wouldn't count on that though. Unless you're 100% sure that you can exclusively lock your phone to Digicel or Flow I wouldn't chance it. If your phone roams onto Telcell or Chippie on the Dutch side you'll likely have a large bill waiting for you when you get home. Be careful.

    Thanks for the warning.

Are Telcell or Chippie also GSM?

And shame on Sprint for not making that clear on their website

  11. Except that the advertisement is only successful if the trainer actually buy something from the store. Again, it is VERY difficult to convince a person to change wireless providers.

You should call up Sprint and Verizon and let them know advertising on TV is a huge waste of money because it does not allow for an immediate transaction and nobody changes providers anyway.

Also, WTF does Charmin keep advertising with those damn bears? Its toilet paper. We have no choice, we have to buy it.

  12. I realize that. Starbucks is not a valid comparison. A drink that is $4-6 in range versus a wireless provider. People will gladly go to Starbucks to catch a Pokemon while sipping on a nice drink. People will not be wiling to go through the hassle of visiting a wireless provider store. I just do not see this being a major announcement for Sprint and I do not see it brining in much business.

People playing the game will see a new gym or pokestop and click on it.

It will then say "Sprint store"

Player says "Huh, I didnt know there was a Sprint store there!"

Or "Huh, I didnt know Radioshack was still in business!'

    Advertisement successful.

  13. Wow "huge" announcement... How many subs will this bring in? How will this enhance revenue? This would have been great news in September back when there was the "craze". I personally cannot say when the last time I saw someone playing the game. I assume this number will decrease even further with freezing weather in the forecast for a large chunk of the USA in the coming weeks.

    1. Millions still play

    2. Starbucks is launching Pokemon themed drinks

    3. 100 more pokemon are being released soon
