  1. Completely stock for the last few days.

Hmm that's a bummer. I'm guessing that whatever issues people are having is related to their market. I've only seen my phone stay on 3g or 1x for at most 10 minutes before switching to LTE and the phone predictably will be on band 25 or 41 at the same locations every time.

  2. After spending another day with the update, I'm experiencing the same problems as many others. Most of the time I sit camped on 3G, resetting connection I will hit band 25 LTE and be dropped back to 3G a few minutes later. It feels like Syracuse was 6-8 months ago before they had more than a few towers broadcasting LTE, and definitely not like a launched city. So far it's looking like I'll be going back to one of the older modems but I'll give it to the end of the week.

Have you flashed another ROM or are you running stock?

  3. Yeah I found a lot of EVDO service in and around LA using Signal Check, which is something I haven't seen since 2012 in Chicago.  All our 3G is now eHRPD since all our sites are 3G/4G/800 complete, so the existence of EVDO implied legacy sites are still quite abundant in the LA Market.  We all know legacy sites equate to the stereotypical bad Sprint service with dial up like speeds.

I can't remember the last time I've seen EVDO.  LA is a really large city tho.

  4. A question for those much smarter than I. Is there a way that someone who is familiar with radios could dive into the new .13 radio and decipher what change was made to enable spark? Could this be implemented into a previous radio? I know this would probably not be an easy task, but it was a thought I had earlier.

Probably best to find and ask some of the Cyanogenmod developers who have worked on these issues in the past.

  5. My data has been really stable since the update and probably performing better than before.

I don't have anything to compare to but I'm in a spark area and have been connecting to B41 pretty consistently.

  6. My N5 acted weird today. After breakfast I sat it on the counter. 4 hours later I picked it up and the display was black and the buttons didn't seem to do anything. I plugged in the USB cable and it showed up as a media device as normal but I still couldn't get it to reboot etc. I got it working using ADB to recovery then a normal boot. Had me worried for a awhile.

Long pressing the power button will usually reset the device.

  7. Spent half the day in Long Beach after driving from San Diego. Very poor/intermittent data connection and call quality both during the drive and in the city. :( Also had trouble getting a GPS lock. I had to embarrassingly make a call using someone's Verizon phone and navigate using another person's AT&T phone.

Lack of GPS lock makes me think there is something wrong with your phone.   Does the G2 have GPS issues?

  8. So we have 11 pages of responses over something that may not, in all actuality, be terrible for even high data users.  Has Sprint specified how low they would throttle the speeds?  Not from what I have seen.  I actually doubt that after NV they would throttle even the highest users to below 500kbps unless the site was severely over capacity (which would hopefully be rectified down the line by network engineers if it were constant).  They just announced the Spotify deal.  I highly doubt they would throttle to the point where many of the people they just signed would want to flee.  They know, better than any company in America, that one unhappy customer tells about 7 people of his/her experience, whereas a happy customer typically only tells 2-3.

Not sure if it will interest anyone but here is the text of the linked FAQ from 2012.

  9. As I said, file a class action lawsuit if it's that big of a deal. Don't get me wrong, I am just as upset by the delay but if you want to try to influence expedience of the update complain to sprint. They are the only ones who would have any hope of speeding up the process. And even that's doubtful. It's Google... They will do things on their terms.

Class action lawsuit is a bit too dramatic for me.  As much as I'm hoping for the update, I'm in no way upset at Sprint or Google.  I would have bought the phone either way.

  10. If you are connected to LTE 1900, then you will have ample signal for CDMA1X 1900. CDMA1X 800 is not needed in that situation.

    AJ

This makes sense but I don't find this is always the case...at least not currently.   One place I travel through in particular has really terrible LTE 1900 coverage for about a block but my phone remains connected to it despite that.  When a call connects to CDMA1X 1900 in this spot I'll barely be able to hear the caller and will almost always have to hang up and try again.

  11. Well, even if it did detect that, switching you to 800 while talking on the phone would cause the call to drop anyway...

    -Mike

Oh I didn't know calls would drop if you're switched to 800.  This probably explains why no Sprint users that I know have really seen an improvement with 800.  Pretty much everyone I know with sprint complains of dropped calls, and voice cutting in and out...hopefully Sprint is able to figure out a way to improve the experience.

These issues weren't really issues until about 2 years ago so I'm guessing they are solvable but will just take time.  Data is working better than ever tho.

  12. I agree that the 1900-priority PRLs seem to be too conservative about switching to 800 when the PCS signal is weak. Perhaps Sprint is afraid of overburdening the sole 1x800 carrier? The only workaround for the moment is to flash an 800-priority PRL. Hopefully in due time, the network will become smarter about switching users to 800 when the 1900 signal is questionable, and only punting back to PCS when that 1x800 carrier gets too busy. After ESMR rebanding is complete, there may also be certain markets where Sprint has enough spectrum to squeeze in a second 1xA carrier. If that is the case, hopefully the move quickly to deploy it.

I wonder if Sprint's network is able to detect when the voice is cutting in and out - if so they should switch you to 800.  Otherwise I hope they are able to adjust the threshold of what a usable 1900 signal actually is.  No point in connecting a phone call if I can only hear 50% of what the person says.

  13. How much better is connectivity on spark capable phones (specifically using the 800MHz band) in the general Los Angeles market?

Interested more so in connectivity rather than speed.

I tend to only to connect to 800 in places where I normally wouldn't have service.  Like a parking garage or deep inside a building or something.  I'm not connecting to 800 in places where I have a low signal or where the signal is barely usable with calls cutting in and out.

It's still early and so I am hoping the user experience improves with time as it is currently less than what I expected.

  14. Those dont need to be upgraded as they take the weak signal and repeat it stronger with some amplifiers i assume

On the Sprint site, the user said that Juni support told him that the repeaters are connected by fiber to either a base station or the closest  tower.

If this is true - I'd think the base station/tower could directly tell the repeater what signal to broadcast.  Is it possible these these antenna's are all broadcasting there signals independently rather than just taking a weak signal and amplifying it and that the processing of data/calls is just done off site at the base station/tower that these are all connected to?

  15. The 32gb Black Nexus 5, it shows up as a Nexus 5 with picture and everything. Doesn't state capacity on the activation screen; as I am not switching back till post spark update! So I don't know if it shows the capacity of the model as well....

Working here too!  I can also now set preferences on my account, block numbers, etc... About time!

Maybe someone with connections to Sprint is reading this thread?  Someone should try to activate a Tmobile Nexus again., maybe it'll work this time.

  16. This is an interesting question! May I ask what region you are in?

I would like to research this topic more as well. I see that Juni made a WiMAX repeater, they make enterprise and home versions. I wonder if this is a company along the lines of Wilson or similar products? Sweet, if nothing else mrjeff you piqued my interest in the 'what happens between macros' type cell technology, again. I would like to learn how this and other technologies are used to supplement service on a wider scale, what areas, and how it is implemented. While home use is always handy and all that, I would like to see or hear the bigger companies i.e. Sprint usage for these.

I must also admit I would like to see one in action and maybe add some to my epic picture collection. I have an itch for unique technologies that are not widespread or in the open, or that help serve people in hard to reach geographical places. This is just a sweet topic I would like to see more of. To the internets!

FWIW, I got most my information from this currently unavailable sprint forum message (still on google cache tho).  You can view it here.

Some pictures of these guys are available in this thread here.   They are spread out constantly through out the canyon on many of the turns.
