  1. There are several possible motives for the recent actions by Sprint, including the hope that Verizon and AT&T also back out for now and delay the auction giving Sprint time to improve its network like originally planned. Don't forget they have plenty of lowband and both have made big acquisitions recently including the last AWS auction.

  2. I think that Sprint and T-Mobile need to at least merge network assets. Both of them went deeply into debt to deploy LTE and by the time they finish they have to start all over again for 5G. I had hoped they would have network shared for LTE but that was not to be. I hope they look at their debt load and put egos aside...

It's not their decision to make. The FCC doesn't want them to merge.

  3. I would have liked Sprint bidding, if for no other reason than to drive the prices up for the others. It is going to be interesting to see if Verizon is out as well, they've also made rumblings about not participating. VZ might be better served with Dish spectrum. They have ample low band but need to supplement their middle band holdings.

I get the counter arguments that Sprint needs to fund NGN but low band is such a finite resource. It's nice Sprint has a national band for low band LTE with band 26 but it would have been nice to supplement that in certain markets that are strong for Sprint.

With the reserve and restrictions on AT&T and Verizon, Sprint would have been in good position for lowland spectrum at decent prices. They are helping T-Mobile by not participating and at least raising the prices. T-Mobile is in great position now to get lowband at a bargain.

  4. All of these "promos" are riddled with fine print of dependence of trading in a working device, and depending on what device it is, how low your payments go.

$20 on T-Mobile with no trade in, $22 with sprint.

$15 for both if you trade in an older smartphone from both T-Mobile and Sprint.

It's really no different than doing an EIP structure where the balance is reduced by the value of the trade, reducing overall MRP towards the balance. This isn't some smoke and mirrors show on either part, just overly complicated charts that highlight an edge case that demonstrates some fantastic number that the company wants to toot its PR horn about.

The real winners here are consumers who don't care enough, or are incapable of figuring out the actual value of devices and they see a low number per month, and that works for them. Their iPhone was worth $200 new, so it's basically worthless now right?

I also think comparisons are totally unequal because we are comparing an 18-month lease term on T-Mobile to a 22-month lease term on Sprint. So let's keep that in mind as well.

Well the chart does say price after 12 months.

  5. In their defense, the memory in the phone is a different breed of memory than the card. It's much faster.

Let them offer 2 versions, a faster one with no SD and one with SD support. Which do you think would sell more?

  6. That is exactly what Fabian says when he's lost for words and can't somehow figure out a way to say something bad about Sprint or praising T-Mobile/John Legere. Then again, maybe he's just exhausted trying to imagine the day when he meets his idol, John Legere. That is, if he hasn't already.

Imagine having to deal with Fabian on a plane trip he's taking to go meet John Legere. He'd bug the hell out of the flight staff and the other passengers about meeting his almighty un-batman (in rl more like the joker) John Legere, how John Legere "rescued" consumers from the mean, evil "duopoly", and how Fabian sees himself in John Legere. fighting the so -called "S4GRU Sprint Trolls", on Fierce Wireless every day, and making sure that everyone who reads the comments sections on Fierce Wireless knows just how bad Sprint is, and just how great T-Mobile and of course John Legere, truly is.

Then again, all that talk on the plane likely is just as exhausting to poor little Fabian, as is his thinking about T-Mobile and John Legere. However, other than repeating it to John Legere after they meet, considering its pretty much all Fabian talks about anyways, it is doubtful Fabian will say much else, other than this :

"Yes Sir", "No Sir", and "Please don't fire me Sir, I never called my store manager a trollish slut for not going out with me. I would never do that, Sir. I don't date anyone in my free time, because all of my time off work is spent online promoting our company and making sure everyone knows how great the uncarrier is, Sir. I was fired from Sprint for being a douchebag, and that is why I hate Sprint. They suck and are full of Trolls. But, I love T-Mobile and if you don't fire me, give me a promotion and I'll do anything you want, Sir!"

True... but you just spent too much of your time writing that post on that chick. She ain't worth that many words.

  7. If you are counting on plenty of or even any reserved spectrum in all markets, stop counting. That is entirely dependent upon TV broadcaster participation. I still expect another delay in the 600 MHz auction -- or outright disaster, as TV broadcasters may opt out. I hope so. This could be a fun train wreck to watch.

Too bad we would have to wait for that "Super Extended Range LTE"

  8. they would need to buy enough to split it between t mobile and sprint, I can't see sprint and t mobile doing a shared deployment. the LTE would also have to be available to sprint and t mobile customers, not just FI customers otherwise it wouldn't be worth the build out cost for sprint or t mobile, unless google wants to provide the equipment as well, i doubt that would be worth it for google, and would just help drive the cost up.

Well 30 mhz is set aside. That's 15x15. You aggregate that with b41 or/and b4 CA. The build out is used with money saved from the auction.

  9. This is a quite interesting take on "Combining" Sprint/T-Mobile, but keeping them separate...

    http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/sprint-t-mobile-could-combine-network-assets-new-company-analysts-argue/2015-09-22

Is there a chance Google buys 600 spectrum for both Sprint and T-Mobile to use and build out along with FI?

  10. Welcome to Fabian Cortez's Magenta Superfans...

So, who would win in a fight between between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Legere? Of course, Legere would have one hand tied behind his back.

LE-gere! LE-gere! LE-gere -- but it will not be a TKO until the final round.

What will be the subscriber numbers at the end of Q4 2015?

    T-Mobile: 380 million. VZW: 60 million. AT&T: 50 million. Sprint: negative 37.

But, Fabian, those numbers don't add up.

Legere will somehow find a way.

Finally, who's a bigger rock star, Bono or Neville Ray?

    NE-ville! NE-ville! NE-ville!

Yeah, that one wasn't even close.

    AJ

    You have comprehension issues.

  11. The sealed battery trend is to get people to change phones more often. ( More sales) I still have a note 2 because I just kept buying new batteries when the old ones started to fail. Same with SD card support. They want to charge extra $100 for memory that's only $20 on a card.

  12. Even though Lowell McAdam has denied Verizon being interested in purchasing Dish, I think they will do so, instead of just leasing spectrum from them, as there is more value in that, than just leasing spectrum from another company. Besides, Dish wants a wireless company to own and have bundled services tied in with their Satellite.

I think Masayoshi Son and Softbank really ought to purchase Dish before Verizon does, since it seems there isn't going to be a deal between Dish and T-Mobile. Then later on, Softbank can try again acquiring T-Mobile, especially as they can claim to the FCC it will expand choice giving customers better value with both mobile and television together.

That'll only cost around 100 billion.
