"We still have a lot to cover" is what the invite (picture below) says.  New iPad 5 is expected, but people aren't sure about whether the iPad mini will go Retina or not.  Updated desktop Macs are also likely.

I personally hope that the iPad mini goes Retina and that it and the regular iPad both get Touch ID.

  2. Out of curiosity, do most of you go with the base storage model, or do you need 32 or 64GB?  One of the great things about the iphone is that I could potentially not have to have both an ipod and a phone since the iphone has the functionality of both.  I may be in the minority, but 64GB just isn't enough for the music I'd like to have on me, let alone apps and vids.  Have so many people switched to streaming services that the larger models just don't sell?  I was always confused as to why Apple seemed to really stall in expanding the storage size each year like they used to.

As someone else said, if you have a huge music library, iTunes Match is fantastic.  For $25 a year, I can stream my entire collection (even stuff not on the iTunes Store) without taking space on my iPhone or iPad.  Another nice feature of iTunes Match is that if you have it then the iTunes Radio feature has no ads.

As for which size is best, a lot depends on the type of user you are.  My parents are photo hoarders and can't seem to want to delete their photos after syncing to their computer, so the 64GB model is best for them.  I personally have the 32GB model as it gives me more room for trying out different apps and games.  I generally recommend that size to new users.

  3. Yeah that was an unfortunate casualty with my redesign, can't quite decide how I want to add them back in, The hover comments I used the first time didn't work with IE8 that I was updating it in, and the entire thing was glitching so bad I went with the simplest UI while keeping the info.

I'll figure out how to add some sort of glossary back in again that fits the design.

I would just add a "Glossary" tab that lets you give those types of definitions.  Thanks again.

  4. Ok, I updated the spreadsheet again today, and have dramatically adjusted it's layout with more information I found. Some of the formatting needs to be adjusted. I had to use IE8 to work on it, and Google Docs doesn't support it so I was fighting with the computer for an hour to make the adjustments I did manage to get done.

I'll go back through sometime at home and clean it up a bit, but all of the main information should be there now.

Looks good, but can you add a glossary of the acronyms? I'm not familiar with some of them.

  5. I never understood the allure of a removable battery and why it's constantly causing arguments amongst the android faithful. I already hate carrying stuff around with me all day. I wouldn't want a battery in my pocket "just in case." It's so much easier to just have a car charger in my vehicles, and wall chargers in a few spots of my house. I've never had a problem.

When I was on Android, I had a Galaxy S.  It's battery life was only a few hours, so I bought a few extras and had to rotate through them as I went through the day.  As soon as I got in the car, I always plugged in my GS.  I think some Android people get used to that and are then worried about issues with an iPhone running out on a daily basis.  Now if the internal battery ever went bad, that would be an issue, but by that time iPhone people are usually ready to upgrade their phones or have AppleCare and get the replacement for free.

I do have one of those external USB battery packs, but I only use that for road trips.  I use it mostly for my iPad 2, which after 3 years doesn't have the battery life it used to.  It still is decent though.

  6. I never hear of the iPhone being a non-removable battery being a downside to the iPhone neither as a SD card.  All tech blogs ever mention about the battery is that it is non-removable and that it doesn't have a SD card but that is just only stating the specs of the phone.

It's not an issue for me, but I have several friends that specifically won't get an iPhone because of the non-removable battery.

  7. Hi everyone,

What's available is some indication of the radio access technology. But we still don't have signal strength so we wouldn't know whether to draw  dark purple or light purple :(

How is RootMetrics able to do it then?

  8. I think iOS 7 drains the battery faster than iOS 6. My iPad 3 is wifi only, so any cdma/lte/low signal issues aren't a factor, but my battery definitely doesn't last as long as before.

There's some new features that can impact battery life.  Here's what I did.  Battery life is now better than it was on iOS 6 on my iPad 2 and iPhone 5:

    1.  I don't remember if the iPad 3 has AirDrop, but if it does, open Control Center and turn it off.

    2.  Settings | General | Background App Refresh is an important one.  It controls which apps can periodically update in the background.  Turn off the apps that you don't need to use this for.

    3. Settings | Privacy | Location Services lets you see what apps have recently used your location.  A purple arrow means it's been used recently, a grey arrow means in the past 24 hours.  Turn off access to apps that don't need to use it.

  9. I'm in Humble/Atascocita. Right at Atascocita Rd and Will Clayton to be exact. My concern is that part of my neighborhood has LTE service and even a good section of Will Clayton Parkway as well until you get to the entrance of my subdivision. I hope that it hasn't been fully activated in this area because that may mean that we won't get a good LTE signal at home or am I thinking about it all wrong? Thanks for the tip I'll check it out!

It's got a ways to go there, so it can get better for you.

  10. Sprint says that Houston LTE will be complete by November which is approaching quickly. I hope that they will wait until November to actually activate LTE and have not activated it yet because for now I seem to only get LTE in a few places around town. Hopefully what I'm picking up every now and then is just a test and not where they've already turned LTE on.

What part of town are you in?  A good portion of the city has LTE now.  If you become a subscriber of this site, you get access to maps that show where 4G is accepted.  I also keep up with a map (see sig).

  11. I've seen a couple of FB posts from my friends who complain about sickness after using their phones for awhile. I haven't played with iOS 7 myself so I don't have any personal experience on the matter myself.

However, it's important to keep in mind that people react differently to different things. These people can very well be feeling uncomfortable or sick because of it. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't make it any less real.

I'm going to find a good article on how to turn off the setting in question and spread it around. At least it's an easy fix.

I posted how earlier in this thread.

  12. My mom gets motion sickness easily, and has told me that moving home screen around and all the animations have made her dizzy at times (she has an iPad). Amplify someone who gets sick even easier, and yeah I could see some actually getting sick from it. It makes me uneasy at times too. Enough so that I really want to roll my iPad back to iOS 6.

Did you turn off the animations?

  13. I wonder if it's the Dynamic wallpapers that are doing it?  I always thought that was a dumb feature when I first saw it when I had a Galaxy S.  Seemed like a good way to drain the battery.

I use a personal static image so the effect is not that great.

The Parallax effect is easy enough to turn off though.  Settings | General | Accessibility | Reduce Motion.

  14. Just putting it out there, but I see the total number of iPhones sold a bit skewed. While people are saying that the iPhone 5s still broke records, they should leave it at that. People that couldn't, or wont, pay $200 for a new phone, paid $99 for the iPhone 5c. I think that really made it more possible for them to sell so many iPhones.

Basically, what I'm saying is. Do any of you agree that without the 5c apple could have still sold 9 million units of the 5s?

Even though the 5c is almost the same thing as the 5, it's still something new for those 4 and 4s users to upgrade to.  IMHO, if Apple just came out with the 5s and no 5c, then those that couldn't spend $199 would have gotten the 5 instead.  I don't think Apple would have done 9M in 5s sales.

  15. Some guy did a piece a few months ago that Apple was making a mistake because it would undercut itself with the 5c.  I only posted one reply to the article, but I said I thought he was wrong since people whom always buy the latest model will keep buying the latest model... while the people that keep buying the 2nd oldest model $100 cheaper will keep doing that....  the current sales of the 5s again prove I'm right because the latest model has always outsold everything else.. This is really no different then other premium phones.  The Galaxy continues to thrive and outsell previous generations.  When the G S5 comes out its a no brainer they'll sell less S4's, but they will sell them

Makes sense.  I said earlier in this thread that I don't see how anyone buys a 5c unless they're really price-conscious or it's for a teenager.
