  1. Could be that hand ups isn't enabled properly yet. I've seen that happen in many places that have B41 online.

Yeah, as a fellow tri-band user in DC (Logan Circle) - I can attest that the network in DC isn't fully ready yet. I tend to get stuck on a weak band 25 signal until I reset my wireless connection. I'm sure it will work itself out soon.

I just feel lucky that Clear was able to steamroll B41 through my area.

  2. As long as you're steadily streaming data, it doesn't look.  If there is a periodic pause in the data stream, it will check.

Pandora often has gaps and doesn't steady stream and that gives the phone a chance to look.  Other apps may not stop very often.

If your 3g connection is weak or slow, there may not be any gaps for it to pause long enough to look.

As 4G fills in, this will become less of an issue as you will have a more constant 4g high data rate.

Thanks - I figured this was the case. Otherwise, my new phone really loves going it slow on 2G technology.

  3. I live in a 1x800 area and I've noticed now that when I make or receive a phone call, it seems to be random whether it uses 800 or 1900. I know with my S3, it would scan 1900 first, then switch to 800 if the signal was weak. I live a few blocks from a tower so I would expect it would just use 1900 but even here it uses either seemingly random.

Does anyone know why the S4t does this? It's obviously not a problem, I'm just curious.

Unfortunately, all I can do is speculate. I know on the LTE side of the shop, the network decides which band you connect too. Your experience seems to mimic that albeit, I am not sure the CDMA network is that 'smart.' Do you have any LTE in your area? I am curious what happens, if you set your phone to CDMA-only.

  4. Sprint should had left the 4G icon for 1900 mhz lte and the 4G LTE for band 41. USA another pathetic decision by sprint network and handsets dept. These idiots keep screwing things up.The average Joe doesn't know what is band 41, so putting that hideous spinning icon is a waste of time.

This was more of a marketing decision. While I like the Sprint Spark branding, I do agree they could have done better... the Spark MIcrosite is pretty bad. Luckily for Sprint, Masa has hit the reset button with Sprint Marketing.

Anyways, visited NYC this weekend and service was much better than I anticipated. Heck, I was getting LTE on Ellis Island and my partner-in-crime's Verizon GS4 could barely register a signal. It just felt soooooo good.

  5. I know if the County of Frederick could make the city of Frederick just disappear, things would be easier as a whole.

I say the same thing about NoVA all the time... ;)

Although, whenever the silver line opens it will make my life much less stressful than siting in the assortment of moving parking lots trying to get home.

You asking me about Frederick? If so that could be possible, just if a permit was issued would it be a little quick for any activity to occur? I drive home down N Market street and it would be just a side loop around the block.

Yeah, only if you get a chance. I'm hoping for some Masa magic with work underway already...

  6. I may not fully understand the whole backhaul story, but if Verizon has advanced backhaul to their rural sites why can't other carriers also get the backhaul there.  Some of these rural areas have to be on the same tower as well.  I mean I understand Sprint is having a tough time getting backhaul to many of their towers (even here in the NYC market), but what can be done to speed this up?  It is definitely an interesting time in the wireless market.  Finally starting to see decent competition among the four major carriers.

A lot of it comes down to who owns the 'local-ish' lines and whether microwaves will be used. Many rural sites use microwave dishes to get backhaul, the problem is who runs the backhaul at the origination point. I've seen Comcast and Verizon do some dirty things here in DC (Comcast loves to accidentally pull competitor's cables) and it wouldn't surprise me if it happens in other business units....

  7. The timing of this move is peculiar, we just 'redeployed' half my team yesterday. Maybe this week was the quarterly reorganization week.

Anyways, I think this is a great organizational move. At the end of the day, the 'network,' at a primarily wireless firm, should be the only focus of one C-level executive.

Having peered into the inner workings of Sprint, many teams are still stuck in the pindrop era.

  8. It was disappointing to get a confirmation of sorts from Sprints customer care on their forum that the Frederick, MD area is not even on the scheduled for LTE at this time.

Well it looks like hope is on the way. A permit was issued on 2/11 (App #: BP-14-00365) by the City for 30 W Patrick. This straggler also includes some Microwave antennas, so hope is on the way for a quick LTE deployment in the immediate downtown.
