  1. Sprint site spacing is so atrocious in Grand Rapids. They inherited the network there from iPCS. It will take a Triband LTE phone to get usable service in this market, in my opinion. If you stay with the Note 2, you will always have a subpar experience there.

Being able to use CDMA on 800MHz now and LTE on 800MHz soon is the only chance for sanity in a market like Grand Rapids. You need to switch to Triband or find another provider.

Robert via Samsung Note 8.0 using Tapatalk Pro

800 CDMA is accepted all across GR, but it's not live everywhere. It definitely helps a lot where you can pick it up, so I'm hoping LTE 800 gets here fast. Sadly, it seems this market is oversaturated with people on Epic Touches, and LTE 1900 is already struggling in places.

That, and if the Clearwire WiMAX sites get turned in to Network Vision sites, many of our problems will be solved as well. Here's me crossing my fingers.

Thanks for the response.  That's the way I've been leaning is to try the G2 for a few days and see if it makes a difference and if so great.  If not, well then I will switch.  Is Triband active in GR then?

Not sure if Rob is okay with me throwing this out there, but I do have a G2, new in-box, I'm willing to part with for very cheap...

  2. Keep in mind...I was told at Sprint that you HAVE to walk out the door with a $15/mo plan....you can switch it to $5/mo online any time...(Prolly just trying to keep their Commissions high)

Without going into details, most Tablet sales don't "count" if the customer goes on the $5/month plan. For some stores, that isn't the difference between "high" commission or not, it's the difference between "comission" or "no comission."
  3. If it still requires cdma signal to work, I wonder if a really weak signal would suffice. Otherwise I don't see Airaves going away anytime soon.

I wonder about that myself. How often does it need to call home? Does the device just need to see "Sprint" in its PRL and be good?

The restrictions stated make it sound like it's based on the Sprint licensing schemes for spectrum, but that shouldn't matter - it's WiFi.

  4. I wonder if this could be a work around "fix" for Airave's and tri-band phones without needing to disable LTE at home.

Considering the two phones in that screenshot are both Spark enabled, it would not surprise me at all that they're accelerating this for Spark phones.

Not only that, but getting this rolling on all Android devices eventually will dramatically reduce their overhead costs in purchasing and maintaining Airaves...

That being said, that screenshot looks like it's from a legitimate Sprint online training course. I'd recognize that 1990's style page layout anywhere. What really tipped me off was the edge of one of those hideous yellow rounded-corner next buttons...

  5. I don't believe the average smartphone user metrics for one second.

They are entirely biased based on the plan that user is already on.

If a user is on a 1 gig plan, of course they are not going to use more than a gig.

Show me honest and accurate average for only unlimited data plan users (across all carriers with grandfathered unlimited data users), and I guarantee it would be more than just over 1 gig.

    30 seconds of Googling:

    http://www.fiercewireless.com/special-reports/average-android-ios-smartphone-data-use-across-tier-1-wireless-carriers-thr-1

I apologize, my numbers were slightly low. However, even Sprint users, who have had unlimited data, use 0.68-1.43 GB of data per month. Other carriers have similar numbers.

  6. So essentially, for 1 line on the framily unlimited, we save $4.99 savings but are losing subsidization.

    definitely no thanks.

Correct. Nobody is going to really argue that the friends and family plan, that's basically the turbo version of the referral program, is a good deal for a single line.

Edit: The Unlimited Data package also comes with Annual Upgrades similar to the old One Up program.

As well, your average smartphone user uses just over 1 GB of data a month, and with things like the Nexus 5, phone subsidization may not be something you need at all.

  7. Apparently chat can change people to the Framily Plan.  I asked her to compare the cost of the Framily Plan to my current plan (ED 450) and she informed me that I was on the best plan for having only 1 line on my account right now.  Her reasoning was the $15 fee that she insisted I was not eligible to have waived.  She also felt the need to place a note on my account explaining this.  Needless to say I did not let her change my plan.

I have a feeling that whomever you talked to was, ah, not trained properly.

One line on Framily with Unlimited Data and no phone financing would be $75, vs the $79.99 of Everything Data 450. If you only want 3 GB, it's $65, and 1 GB, it's $55. The only way it's more expensive is to add a phone financing option on top.

The $15/month fee is only for customers who switch to Framily and have received a subsidized upgrade on or after 1/10/2014. If your last upgrade was before that, feel free to switch and not get charged the fee.

This is just for people that were on One Up right?

No, the opposite in fact. Anyone who has used a subsidized upgrade more than 6 months ago is immediately eligible for Easy Pay to start a new phone subsidy.
  8. So if I currently have a no-charge Airave due to poor home service, that could be retained under the Framily plan?

Also, being two weeks shy of my upgrade, I'm pretty disappointed in the timing of this for purely selfish reasons!

    Kevin

Your Airave will stay on its current $0 plan. Phones can go on Framily if you wish.

By the way, people can now switch to Framily + Easy Pay and get a new phone if you've had a phone for at least 6 months, no giveback required.

  9. Currently we are looking at one 5x5 800mhz carrier, one 5x5 1900mhz carrier, and one 20mhz TD-2600mhz carrier. As is it is my understanding that this provides a similar or equal level of capacity as the 20x20 AWS/PCS carriers that Verizon and T-Mobile are deploying.

    We've got effective downlink capacity of 5 MHz (1900 MHz 5x5 FDD) + 5 MHz (800 MHz 5x5 FDD) + 12 MHz (3:2 20 MHz gives an "effective" 12 MHz of downlink) = 22 MHz. So, we're slightly better ;)
  10. I have it confirmed with a Sprint Rep

for existing sprint customers on different accounts and want to join the new Framily plan, they can do a "change of owenrship" to merge the accounts

of course, only do this with someone you trust to pay their bills.

    https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/709058#709058

Right, you do what's called a "transfer of liability". You put the liability of the phones in question under someone else's name. This somewhat eliminates one of the biggest advantages of Framily, as you will receive a single bill. You also may not be able to do this, depending on the credit of the receiving account. But yes, it will work.
  11. The only words that you will hear out of Legere's mouth is what makes Magenta look good...Yes, it's true Sprint is only deploying 5x5 on 1900, but he doesn't mention the other two bands. Why would he. Everyone knows that 10 is a bigger number than 5....So that must be better right?

    Yes, but 22 (5 + 5 + 12 (3:2 ratio for 20 MHz TD-LTE, effectively)) is bigger than 10.

  12. Ive seen a few people say sprint is moving away from unlimited and ditching the unlimited guarantee. But it is clearly included in the FAQ 4yhumune.jpg

Sent from my LG-LS980 using Tapatalk

That must have been something they quickly backpedaled on; the Launch Guide and FAQ from a couple days ago clearly said that the Unlimited Guarantee was not included, despite Unlimited Data being offered.
  13. Does this mean that instead of prices getting cheaper mean that they will increase instead over the years? Mobile is already expensive as it is.

    UPDATE: Article on the matter.

    http://www.kansascity.com/2014/01/07/4735153/sprints-unlimited-plans-locked.html

The key part of this is "years". The cellular industry today is nothing like it was in 2011, which was nothing like it was in 2008...

As we've discussed on this site ad nauseum, unlimited data is untenable in the long term.

  14. What I got from reading the material is that there will be some kind of promotional period in which you will be able to switch with out paying the 15 dollars. That is the way I read it anyway, but we will have to see.

Yes. Anyone who has upgraded before 1/10/2014 can switch to Framily without paying the $15 extra charge.

So does this mean that people can't sign up for one up anymore?

    -Anthony

Correct. One Up is being retired in lieu of Easy Pay.

Just read through this whole thread, and something hasn't been addressed. Is this some kind of ploy or loophole to get people off of their recent "unlimited for life guarantee" plans? Does framily have that guarantee if choosing an unlimited data option? /edit: found it in their FAQ section. Unlimited guarantee for life will be honored if the unlimited data is selected.

Oh? All the material I could find specifically called out that the Unlimited Guarantee was NOT included with Framily. I don't think that's an issue, to be honest. I think, for some reason, they just don't see a reason to continue with the "Unlimited Guarantee" marketing; it likely didn't work as well as they'd hoped.

Does anyone else think "Framily" was just Son saying "family" and being misheard on the American end? Then quickly covered up with the concoction of "friends plus family =framily."

No, because Japanese doesn't work like that.

I'd like Sprint to clarify how it works for existing users.  I know you can switch to the Framily plan if you're off contract or pay the additional $15/month, but the terms also mention you can't merge groups.  If I currently have a single line, and I know 6 other people with Sprint, am I considered my own group and therefore cannot merge with the other group?  So that means I'll need people new to Sprint to join onto my plan for the Framily discount?  Can any Sprint employees shed light on this?

Current accounts cannot merge together. You can start a new Framily and add referrals, if you wish.
  15. I read all of the posts but am still confused. The Framily Plans are no contract and for a limited time current lines under contract can switch to the Framily Plan with no additional $15 fee per a line? So to me it looks like my 2 line EPRP Everything Data Plan under contract until 8/14 can switch and then cancel before the contract is up with no fees and keep the phones?

In am correct in what I said above? It doesnt seem correct to me and doesent seem like something that Sprint would do?

While Framily has no contract, if you already have a contract, you will still need to run out that term commitment to not cancel without termination fees.

  16. As I understand it, that is correct.

Now, here is a related question.  The $20 "unlimited" data add on qualifies for annual upgrades.  Does that mean the typical subsidized upgrades?  In other words, handset upgrade cost will be roughly $200 -- instead of full price?

    AJ

Not sure if this got answered...

Framily has no contract, no subsidized upgrades. Phones MUST be either on Easy Pay (Installment Billing), paid at MSRP, or BYOD.

The "Annual Upgrades" that come with the Unlimited Data addon are like Sprint One Up, where you give back your phone, wipe out the second half of the Installment Billing agreement, and start one anew. If you don't go with that package, your Easy Pay agreement must go for all 24 payments.

You do have to stick on the $20/month Unlimited Data package for 12 months consecutively to qualify. No jumping on at the last second.

I think a big issue is going to be the airave line. How would that work? Just an extra fee?

Nope, extra non-Phone lines have their own pricing plans, and have nothing to do with Framily, and do not count against the 10 phone limit. As Framily can span across multiple accounts (for multiple liability), each account has its own line limit dependent on credit.

Plus carriers buy handsets at wholesale cost. There is profit in selling them at MSRP.

Such a profit is much less than you might imagine. Especially Apple devices.
  17. Interesting. It's free for me, although no matter how many times I tried I couldn't get it to stick adding it myself using the OLAM. I just had to call in and CS added the proper SOC. Regardless, I agree with you. It needs to be free no if, ands or buts.

    directconnect.png

If you don't mind me asking, what plan are you on?

Third Party Employee 3000 or something similar. I tried adding it before and was told it was $5. Stopped caring at that point, didn't want to press the issue.

  18. Here's something that may have flown under the radar as I haven't seen it mentioned yet. Late last month Sprint revamped their Direct Connect Now app to include more phones and to supposedly now work on LTE, though that remains to be seen.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qualcomm.qchat.dla

Getting Direct Connect Now running on more high end handsets may be a part of Sprint's alleged attempts to revive the Nextel brand.

I downloaded the app to my Note III to test it out, but it won't activate without a direct connect plan, which is at minimum $5/month.

They could bring back the chirp in a big way if they'd give that out for free and bring it to all sorts of devices.
