  1. So when they get the 800 signal up and running on the sprint network will the tower placement mess with the signal? Because 800 has a much larger range im thinking that the signal will overlap. I this even a problem? Or are they going to pick and choose which tower gets 800 to avoid overlap as much as possible.

All towers get 800. Their configurations are unknown but possibly has antenna downtilt set a bit further than the PCS signal but not that much further that is causes problems.

  2. I will have very nice ones very soon.  I have full access to site in San Diego that is in progress.  Currently awaiting AT&T fiber.  We provide IT services for the clients throughout the building at that site   :tu:

I will make sure I get some snap shots of everything!

Make redundancies of redundancies. I expect albums of 100s of photos of the same thing (Lol). But seriously. I scoured this entire thread, San bernando , orange county, and metro la and cannot find much images so it's much appreciated if yall step up with the images of Alu equipment!

  3. I see you used some shots I took - cool!  OK I have a question - it sure seems to be that there are different sized cabinets for NV.  Are there also different sized legacy cabinets?  I see a couple cabinets locally that may be one or the other  - usually it's easier to tell because the legacy stuff is dingier and dirtier but ....

The Samsung cabinets are all the same two 70" tall cabinets. Every vendor has their own cabinet style but they do the same thing regardless. Legacy wise, there have been dozens of vendors used over the years by Sprint corporate and the affiliates they've acquired so one cannot summarize all legacy equipment in a few pictures like you can with the new network vision gear.

  4. Hmm, thanks. Stupid on spectrum here but you mention 65mhz=4 LTE carriers, a few questions:

Sprint only had 20mhz here going to hopefully 40 of PCS A-G. Do they have 65mhhz anywhere that high capacity is needed? Wouldn't 4 LTE be 40mhz + a couple for guard bands, would seen to be 5 or even 6 LTE if the spectrum was continuous?

When they add TDD-LTE 2500 which I guess is likely at 1st on existing leased towers that will need a new panel that could support more capacity for older spectrum frequencies as well?

One more stupid question, the extra 20mhz Sprint is getting from US cellular would allow them an extra 2 5x5 LTE carriers here (ie 5x5=10*2=20) if they use it for LTE expansion only?

-- I don't believe that they have 65mhz of PCS spectrum in any market. Most have 30-40mhz iirc, some a bit more, and some a bit less. Samsung typically does not max out their RRU capacity before adding a second RRU & antenna. I believe that high capacity sites have 65 degree antennas (or 45 degree narrow beams) set up in such a way that they cover around 120-130 degrees (or one sector) to alleviate load. They can then utilize the same carriers via the two independent PCS RRUs & antennas for the same sectors and thus alleviate the load by splitting one sector between two antennas & 2 rrus.

-- TDD-LTE 2500 antennas are made by Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent, and Ericsson with each market getting the TDD-LTE equipment by who is deploying Sprints NV in that market. Most of clearwires existing upgrades apparently are in Samsung markets as sammy already have a dual mode tdd-lte - wimax in existence and ready to go since yesterday. The TDD-LTE RRU's that samsung has can support 80 mhz or a setup of 40+40 or 4x 20mhz carriers. That setup can get approximately ~100 mbps DL / ~20 mbps UL on a 10:1 TDD setup that clearwire loves using.

-- The 20mhz from USCC is currently being leased back to USCC. What i personally think Sprint will be doing is shutting down one 5x5 carrier and use that spectrum to add carriers to beef up Sprints 3G network in the region. By late summer, I envision they'll probably leave 1 EVDO carriers and 1 voice carrier up for USCC sites and utilize the rest for whatever Sprint deems fit.

*edit* But I'm not sure and AJ or someone else might be able to explain it properly...

  5. Any idea if they were smart enough to deploy 2 panels/sector in spectrum constrained, but high capacity needed areas like the northside of Chicago near the lake (aka loop to Lakeview/Wrigley) figuring they would hopefully get the spectrum ie US cellular etc or will they likely have to revisit each tower and add panels here?

I'd say no. They don't have enough spectrum originally to even reach the capacity of the single PCS 1900 RRU (65 mhz - 4 LTE carriers or 8 CDMA carriers) that Samsung uses and they won't add another antenna (more costs) just to sit there and be pretty. Samsung tends to put another PCS RRU & antenna only when they have enough PCS spectrum to deploy multiple carriers. In high capacity areas like northside of Chicago, TDD-LTE 2500 will be utilized in addition to SMR 800 for capacity.

  6. The cabinets in your new pic look like legacy Motorola cabinets to me, not NV. When I first started tower stalking, I originally thought those cabinets were Network Vision as well since there are so few pics of the new ALU ones here :D. Here's an album of some pictures I have of NV ALU cabinets: http://imgur.com/E7fLSUW,fjtUrlL,w229fq7,GGhYt7m.

I can try to go back and get some clearer shots of the fronts of these cabinets. They seem have a habit of installing them with the fronts facing away from the fence, so it's often hard to get a good view!

At last! Someone offers up images of the ever elusive ALU cabinets! Much thanks! And yes, frontal images of the cabinets would be nice~

  7. You think so? I think NYC will be one of the first markets to get Clear LTE but I think Sprint will be hesistant to announce LTE from Clear and their PCS network is ready here yet.

It's all but confirmed by Roberts sources. In addition, Clearwire has been deploying TD-LTE equipment in Chicago for many months now of which are all are waiting to be connected to Sprint MSC's in order to go live. They need the boost and Sprint knows it too.

  8. It seems like Sprint is currently trying to convert the existing upgraded 3G sites to LTE as the last update had a lot of LTE upgrades and only 1 new 3G upgrades. Coincedence... I hope not!

Possibly gearing up for a summer wave of LTE launches.

Alcatel-Lucent modus operandi of 3g first then 4g a bit after. Watch those existing 3g accepted sites go 3g/4g in the coming weeks!

  9. With iDEN sunsetting this month, what is the realistic expectation that LTE800 will be broadcasting in Chicago any time soon? I'm currently considering picking up a HTC One but due to the lack of a Snapdragon 800 in it, I'm wavering. As it is, the connectivity on my Galaxy Nexus is spotty at best on the north side with almost zero building penetration.

Within 3 months in the Chicago regions, The region will be the first to have all 3 bands (LTE 800 / 1900 / 2500) up and running.

  10. Finally 4G LTE on Galaxy Note II in Vegas. At 'Charleston Neighborhood Preserve' (off Torey Pines and Hyde Ave) 24.7 Mbps dwn and 9 Mbps up.  Holy crap!  Speeds on 3G at my home 4 miles away 1.5-2Mbps. Like going from dial-up to T1.  Sensorly map is spot on.  So excited didn't take Speed Test screen shot (I know, no pic, it didn't happen).  I'll use Sensorly app next time I'm up there.   Digi's pixs have me analyzing tower configs now.  Must get a life. lol  Great sight!  Keep up the good work.

Las Vegas is an Alcatel-Lucent vendor region. Best to go to my thread on Alcatel-Lucent equipment rather than Digis Ericsson one.
