Son said a lot more things last year besides being a "busy guy". He has reaffirmed his support for Sprint multiple times, but they don't bother to mention that in the article.

SoftBank has since made multiple share purchases of Sprint stock and it's right up against the 85% ownership threshold, which if exceeded, would result in SoftBank having to acquire the rest of Sprint.

The Bloomberg Article on which this Seeking Alpha post is based strikes me as a hit piece. I'll bet someone is shorting Sprint stock today.

  2. It's a great idea, although sprints problems still remain. --- the network is still an issue even though it has made huge gains.

Hopefully these guys will keep the pressure on to get these upgrades and small cells going.

Hopefully the regional/local managers have a better sense of what's going on in their specific market and can better direct those improvements as needed.

  3. Sprint just announced a new President for Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands:

Claudio Hidalgo Joins Sprint as President, Florida, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands Region

Prior to joining Sprint, Hidalgo was Chief Operating Officer for Caribe and Central America for Digicel Group. Before that he had been with NII Holdings, Inc. in positions that included chief operating officer of Nextel Brazil and Chief Executive Officer of Nextel Chile. Claudio was responsible for leading the company’s operations, providing strategic guidance and identifying and capturing growth opportunities.

Marcelo has recruited some top talent for One Sprint. He's basically put a CEO in charge of each of the 4 geographical regions (West, Central, South, Northeast) and a manager in charge of 19 specific regions within those 4 areas.

It's remarkable how many of these Area and Regional presidents are senior management or CEO's from other companies, like Claudio. Marcelo has poached a number of regional presidents from Verizon too.

The thinking here is, we're going to put you (as a former CEO or senior manager with experience from another company) in charge of this Sprint area or region. You run it as if you are the CEO or manager. You report your results up the chain. I think it's a great idea.

  4. I think the launch of Carrier Aggregation has been one of Sprint's most successful deployment's in terms of timing. NYC saw a substantial increase in speed and stability in a matter of weeks after the Wimax shutdown.

Hopefully this is a prelude to how Sprint will handle these things moving forward.

I agree. On top of this, John Saw and Gunther Offendorfer have previously said that the densification would not be disruptive to the customer experience. (in one of those Harrison Wiley Show videos)

This is much better than in the past when Sprint was selling the iPhone 5 which supported LTE and Sprint's LTE network wasn't deployed that widely.

  5. I vote no. With this type of industry you should be planning for the what ifs ahead of time. The 18-24 is still what he needs to be held to. If everything went perfect it would be 18 months this 3 month delay still falls in the 6 month window he gave himself..... Now if other things start happening.......

It's actually closer to a 3, 4 or 5 month delay for the respective markets.

See the WiMAX Shutdown Schedule: http://www.mobilebeacon.org/wimax-shutdown/

This pushed everything back a few months at least.

  6. With the delay of the WiMax shutdown, should we add a few months to Marcelo's timeline?

I think that it would be reasonable given the circumstances. Hopefully, Sprint was able to make the best of it given it was a shutdown done in stages, which would have hopefully enabled Sprint to start in those markets as they were shut down. Perhaps others can speak on this more.

  7. This report pretty much tells what will happen the rest of the way. SPRINT ain't gonna pass Tmobile in NYC Tri state , Philadelphia, DC, Boston, Los Angeles, and Dallas Forth worth

Sprint will beat Tmobile in Chicago, Kansas city, and Houston.

The problem with Sprint is, they threaten for the number 1 spot in markets like Cincinnati, Dayton and Pittsburgh then drop down. There is not consistency besides Denver and Las Vegas.

John Saw (CTO) said in one of those "Harrison Wiley Show" Videos from a few months back that Sprint is talking less, and doing more. I'm fine with that as long as there's evidence of doing more.

I think we'll be presently surprised by year end 2016 on what Sprint is able to accomplish. Remember, WiMAX was supposed to be completely off on November 5, 2015 and the final day of service in the staged shutdown wound up being March 31, 2016 due to the Court Order.

Even Shentel said how having WiMAX on substantially delayed network deployments in their area. Sprint has been making these network improvements with one hand behind its back this whole time. Now that WiMAX is finally shutdown, Sprint can make substantial progress on 2xCA, 3xCA etc.

  8. Sprint posted this in its Newsroom:

    http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/consumer-advisory.htm

Looks like a lot of people have been turning in their leased devices to other carriers when porting out from Sprint.

Sprint is going to start sending these customers advisory texts stating their lease obligations starting on April 4th.

"Sprint respects the right of its customers to switch carriers, but we want them to make informed decisions. Starting April 4, the company will begin notifying those customers via text message of their lease obligations when they move to a different carrier."

"Designed to help those customers comply with their lease terms, the text will read: “NOTICE-Sprint is processing your number porting request. Per your lease, return the device to Sprint or pay the full balance before selling or trading.” "

  9. Can someone explains what happens now that WiMAX has been shutdown? Within the last half hour here at my house I no longer see Clearwire B41 in SignalCheck but now Sprint 412 with the same GCI that I saw for Clearwire B41 yesterday. Was this to be expected with the shutdown?

Now that WiMAX has been shutdown, Sprint can fire up LTE and Carrier Aggregation on its capable Clearwire Gear. As for the legacy WiMAX gear (single mode), it can finally remove it from these sites and either replace the equipment with all new LTE gear or unload the site from the roster entirely if no longer needed.

  10. Pat Devlin Joins Sprint as President, Northeast Area; Mariano Legaz Named Chief Procurement Officer

Just announced. Both are former Verizon Region Presidents....

Before joining Sprint, Devlin was the Verizon Wireless New York metro regional president for more than seven years, and the Washington, D.C./Baltimore/Virginia regional president for more than six years. During his more than 20 years at Verizon, Devlin also served as senior vice president of National Distribution and Operations. Throughout his career he has held a variety of leadership positions in sales, operations and distribution. He also was in various sales and operations roles at Bell Atlantic, which merged with GTE Corp. to create Verizon in 2000. Before Bell Atlantic, he was an auditor at accounting consultancy Coopers & Lybrand, a predecessor to PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Before joining Sprint, Legaz was the Verizon Wireless Florida region president, where he oversaw nearly 2,400 employees and was responsible for sales, operations, marketing, distribution, customer service and financial performance. During his more than 16 years at Verizon, Legaz also served as senior vice president-Supply Chain Services, vice president-Sourcing, and director-Capital Planning and Analysis. Before Verizon, Mariano worked for a leading wireless company in Argentina.

These are solid hires by Marcelo.

  11. Sprint Waiving Long Distance Calls to Pakistan

In the wake of attacks in Pakistan over the weekend, effective March 27 through April 5, 2016 Sprint is waiving international calls and text usage to Pakistan from the U.S., and voice and SMS while internationally roaming in Pakistan. This includes all Sprint, Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile USA, and Sprint Prepaid customers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people in Pakistan and for those with friends and families impacted by the attacks,” said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure. “We believe Sprint customers who need to stay close to loved ones over the next few days should be able to so without worrying about incurring fees.”

  12. I am curious how this will play out with ATT who previously would commandeer the

Apple SIM which once you used it for ATT it would not longer be usable on the other

providers (Tmobile and Sprint). The way you would get around this is either purchase

another Apple SIM (price unknown) or try to get Tmobile or Sprint to give you a

SIM but the bottom line was your Apple SIM was bound to ATT. Tmobile and Sprint

didn't do this. You could still switch to another provider using the Apple SIM. With the

new Embedded Apple SIM I wonder if ATT will bind it only to ATT once you subscribe

to an ATT plan via the Embedded Apple SIM?

    Thoughts?

See this article, which explains rules/restrictions that each carrier puts on the embedded SIM in the iPad Pro 9.7": http://techcrunch.com/2016/03/23/explainer-alert-heres-what-the-ipad-pros-embedded-apple-sim-means-for-you/

The embedded SIM is deactivated on the Verizon version of iPad Pro. When traveling with a Verizon iPad Pro, you would need to swap out the physical SIM card for that of a global or local carrier.

If you buy the iPad Pro from AT&T stores, the embedded Apple SIM is used and is then locked for both domestic and international use. However, you can buy an iPad Pro from other channels and select AT&T from the embedded SIM and it will be unlocked for both domestic and international use.

    No other carriers are locked.

  13. Seems like vzw is reorganizing and cutting positions. Seems like sprint is hiring the ones getting cut?

I hope they are better than what sprint had and not being cut by vzw for not getting the job done...?

Or Sprint is giving them an opportunity too good to pass up by staying at Verizon.

I think these former Verizon execs would rather be at Sprint, a company which is slowly chipping away at the big 2 than be at the company (Verizon) that's being chipped away at...

  14. He needs to get retracting that, and very soon!

It makes me wonder if he even watched the Apple event. I did, and I remember it mentioning "up to 150 mbps". You'd think that would have given him a clue for his article too.

You could drop him a line...  B)

  15. I hope Sprint will mark it as that. Also, along with some information about the difference between LTE+ and not, so customers can understand the difference they'll experience on the device vs others, without making it appear the non-LTE+ is bad, just not as capable.

Looks like RCR Wireless already got this wrong for the iPhone SE...

    Article Link: http://www.rcrwireless.com/20160323/carriers/sprint-t-mobile-lte-ambitions-bolstered-apple-iphone-se-tag2

The Apple iPhone 6s models provide support for dual-carrier aggregation, which is expected to be echoed in the iPhone SE.

Someone ought to clue Dan in on this...

  16. I'm buying one on Thursday.

    Did you notice this?: https://www.strategyanalytics.com/strategy-analytics/blogs/devices/handsets/handset/2016/03/21/the-biggest-announcements-at-today-s-apple-event-was-also-the-quietest

The new iPad Pro 9.7" is a dual SIM device...

One of the quieter things to come out of today’s Apple presentations for the new iPhone SE and Apple 9.7-inch iPad Pro was that the new iPad would include an embedded Apple SIM. This makes the new iPad the first non-M2M and non-wearable CE device to use a true embedded SIM

The Apple SIM has been included in previous iPad models, but this new iteration is different. The earlier Apple SIM was a physical SIM card, installed at the factory, which allowed the user to choose from multiple operators’ data plans and provision cellular service directly from their iPad. The new embedded Apple SIM does the same thing. The difference? The new embedded SIM is hardwired directly into the device and is no longer removable (although the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is a dual SIM device, meaning a second physical SIM can be installed and removed).
