  1. This reminds me of some old arguments like:

-Who can afford a data plan?

-Why do you need to carry email around with you on your cell phone?

-With such a tiny screen is it even useful to browse the web on a cell phone?

-Cell phones are for making phone calls.

    Any you know what happened.....

    - Data plans became less expensive.

    - I don't remember this argument (I may have been too young; I always thought this would be a good idea).

    - Screens got much bigger (I also always thought this would be a good idea).

    - Which they are, as well as other things now that the data plans are less expensive and cell phones got bigger.

4K, however, is strictly dependent on the resolution of your eyes.  My eyes cannot tell the difference between 1080p and 4K, for example, except on a very large screen.  To stream 4K to a phone instead of 1080p (or even a lower resolution) does nothing for me.  Our eyes aren't suddenly going to improve in their resolution to the point where we will suddenly be able to see a difference between 1080p and 4K on a 6 inch screen.  Any increase in resolution is going to be wasted.

If I'm understanding Fraydog correctly, I'm more inclined to agree with that argument, which is that while 4K might not make sense, there may be other applications which need 4K-level bandwidth on a phone in the future.  I see no reason to discount the potential future need for the bandwidth, but I don't think streaming 4K to a tiny device is an efficient or sensible use of that bandwidth.

  2. In Vermont this week on vacation and the Sprint service has been... disappointing, to say the least.  On I-91, once we left Massachusetts, the Vermont portion of the trip was either 1X only or, Signal Check indicated, EV-DO and not eHRPD.  Then on VT-103 it was almost all roaming on US Cellular or Verizon (though I did have EV-DO roaming on US Cellular, at least).  Once we got to US-7, there was LTE from the two towers in Rutland, but then it's been 3G/eHRPD basically all the way up to Burlington.  Here in Burlington itself, I finally have B25.

  3. Well, yes, I know that, but I mean which specific towers.  It does appear there are some nTelos towers, much like how there were at least a handful of Nextel towers, that may be useful to Shentel even in their own region.

EDIT:  Also, my count has only 98 towers in the overlap area.  Of course, I'm guessing that the nTelos stuff in Ohio that overlaps will also be taken out.  I count 36 more in Ohio and the overlap area of West Virginia.  I knew I was missing some but that seems like a lot.

  4. Trip,

Do you have a map just showing the overlap in nTelo's eastern markets? I know many of those sites are collocated with Sprint, but I was curious to how many are not. Unless something has changed with this announcement, all of the sites in the eastern market are suppose to shut down. It would be nice to see those non collocated sites be incorporated into the Richmond and Norfolk markets to help densify them...

  5. Am I the only one confused about this Sprint affiliate lingo? Why don't Shentel and Sorint just merge?

Maybe it's just me, but I want to see them remain separate companies.  I think Shentel has generally done a much better job of being competitive with the duopoly and completing their build-outs in a timely fashion.  If Shentel became a part of Sprint, is there any guarantee they would continue to do that?

  6. Trip, pardon my ignorance in asking this, but in regards to Virginia in the above post of yours you linked here....does nTelos not cover the gap along 81 from roughly Mt. Pleasant south to roughly Atkins?  If not, who does?

Edit:  Or, is what you linked simply representative of duplicate site areas alone?  On further review it seems that may be what I missed at first glance, but please enlighten me either way.  Thanks!

Those maps are just the areas where the two companies have overlap.  If you want a map of all the nTelos sites, see here:  http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/6784-trips-cell-tower-map-work-in-progress/page-2&do=findComment&comment=435523

  7. That expansion map is beautiful.  Most of my drive to visit my parents is about to get filled in with service from Shentel.  :)

Look at Buckingham County, currently a giant void, full of yellow.  And US-15 between Culpeper and Gordonsville.  And Red House!  People in that area currently can only use US Cellular, no other carrier has service there.

Premiere Sponsors can see a map showing the overlap of Sprint/Shentel and nTelos tower sites in this post here:  http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/6784-trips-cell-tower-map-work-in-progress/?p=419133&do=findComment&comment=419133

  8. I finally figured out where my mystery B25 signal is coming from at work.  Apparently, the building's DAS is the source.

I happened to be standing in the hallway and looked at my phone and noticed I was at -66 or so.  I found a spot on the ceiling labeled "ANTENNA 6-3" (I work on the 6th floor) and held my phone up to it, and, well...

    That answers that.

  9. Two things:

    1)  For anyone who hasn't seen, there is now a Premiere Subscriber thread with spreadsheet and maps for the Washington, DC and Southern Virginia markets!  If you have SCP data that you would like to contribute or other tips and info, let me know.  Look forward to seeing you there!

    2)  Today I took my handheld spectrum analyzer with me to work.  On the way, I had it looking at 700 MHz.  I observed LTE from both Verizon and AT&T at L'enfant, and I know from experimentation with a MetroPCS phone that T-Mobile has LTE on AWS in L'enfant Plaza Metro as well.  Only Sprint, it seems, does not have LTE there.  I wonder if it's due to Sprint's use of B25 and B26 instead of B2 or B5.  Anyone know?
