  1. You guys have all given some great feedback. Little did I expect for this topic to gain so many responses. Looks like come July, I will be signing up for another 2 years with Sprint. I really hope that LTE is launched in NYC by then and that the new iPhone has launched.

  2. I'm in the EXACT same boat, my contract also ends in November and I'm torn between the two. I live in Queens as well, and I too have an iPhone 4S.

Well it seems like I may be staying with Sprint for another 2 years. I'll be paying $90 with tmo and I already pay $92.12 a month with sprint and Sprint's service i way better than tmo. I read a previous post that people are gettin 8mbps of lte in boston and thats good enought to download apps, stream videos and more. I am not looking for 35 mbps. I dont need all that speed when i can be doing the same thing with 8 mbps down. I believe sprint will also implement LTE away from large cities whereas tmo may not do so until way later.

  3. I recently made the jump to the $30 prepaid T-Mo plan with a Nexus 4. I'll probably make the jump back once Raleigh has NV fully rolled out. Here's what I've found:

    1. Downtown and in urban Raleigh, the HSPA+ speeds are fantastic. I'd almost forgotten what it was like to be able to load Google Maps and Rdio.
    2. Forget about data on the ground floor of a "tower" (what counts for one in Raleigh) once you get a few rooms in. The building penetration just isn't there, likely due to the higher frequencies in use.
    3. GrooveIP is not consistent enough to use over HSPA+, and in some cases even over WiFi. I've opted to add $10-$20 every couple of months to add voice minutes. These minutes roll-over for 90 days.
    4. The Nexus 4 is a phenomenal phone. It is also slippery.
    5. The second you are out of a city, you will be on Edge. However, Edge speeds are roughly equivalent to Sprint 3G in the Raleigh area, but Raleigh just may have the worst Sprint 3G speeds in the country. Less than 100 Kbps is what you can expect for both in the areas I frequent.
    6. There is no roaming with the $30 pre-pay plan. You are on T-Mo, or you are not in service.

    Hope this helps someone.

Wow so I guess I should stay with Sprint. Sucks if I can only be on edge when away from the city

You still haven't answered the question which many of us have already asked so far: "what is your highest priority as a wireless customer? Is it voice coverage? Is it data coverage? Is it faster data speeds?"

We can't really help you answer your question if all you worry is potential issues outside of your control. It seems like from your previous response that if you moved to Tmobile, financially you wouldn't be any better off than Sprint since you plan to upgrade your device every 2 years. So if its not going to be financially driven, then what is your initial reason for contemplating the move to Tmobile? For me its not adding up because like I said...a move to Tmobile will get your out of a 2 year service contract but you will replace it with a 2 year device contract so either way you are in a contract.

Good point, data speeds and data coverage.

  5. Are you loving the Iphone4s you have?

Do you travel much? The biggest pro with Sprint vs. Tmobile for me has always been the robust roaming available with CDMA vs. GSM. That could be a non-issue in the areas you frequent, but I would strongly encourage you to seek out friends or family who have tmobile and ask if or where they have "no service" issues. For me, a move to Tmobile would mean weaker service inside buildings and huge swaths of "no coverage". Its also great to ask about real world HSPA+ speeds. I know that in some dense markets, they can be just as labored as Sprint's 3G.

If your contract ends November 27th, I interpret that to mean you would still have a reduced ETF with Sprint until then. Do you love the Galaxy 4? That would be a solid purchase on either carrier, but if you're gonna go Iphone, I would think you might have a good bit of regret if you jump into a new contract this summer with an Iphone5 and a new release is 2 months out.

When evaluating Tmo, also remember that LTE deployment will be exclusive to current HSPA+ areas

Also, the T-mobile name isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Expect plenty more pink. The newly formed company may evolve the branding a bit, but they don't have the funds to implement a total makeover nor the justification.

Although tmobile does have better 3G speeds than Sprint, Sprint is beginning to impress me. I was at the mets game last weekend and it was 6:33pm and I was getting 3G speeds of .70 down with a 103 ping. Near my job, there is a completed NV 3G tower and I get amazing speeds all day. I use wi-fi at work most of the time but at times i'll turn wi-fi off to remind me of what is to come. I get over 1mbps down.

I used to be with tmobile a couple of years ago but i left because their prices kept going up and i was paying $70 for 350 mins a month with unlimited texting and I jumped to metropcs which their service sucks, then boost, and finally Sprint for the iPhone 4S. Tmobile also had bad service out of the city. Low signal, dropped calls and I dont know if it still that way but I am pretty sure it has improved.

  6.

i wouldn't worry with the noise related with Dish and Sprint. Its still got a long way to go given that the Sprint/Softbank/Clearwire is way closer to getting FCC approval than a Dish/Sprint deal which would still need to go through that long process. For all we know, Softbank could comeback with a counter offer that would appease the minority shareholders if it came down to it. I think Sprint is waiting to see if the FCC will approve the Softbank/Sprint/Clearwire deal in the first place and get their ducks in order as if it was the only deal on the table and see if they can get shareholder approval for the Softbank deal before entertaining any sort of deal with Dish. It would be foolish for Sprint to advise the FCC to halt its thorough review of the merger just because they may or may not deal with Dish.

True what you're saying. I just hope Dish doesn't buy Sprint.

Hmmm... I am still not finding the answer I am looking for but you guys all have made great points.

  7.

A decision on the merger should be made well before November.

The question to ask in considering the ability to save money is do you keep your phones longer than 2 years? If not you will not see any cost savings.

I am very good at taking care of my things. I use my 4S without a case and it's in perfect condition. I've never had to replace the screen or have it repaired so keeping the device for more than 2 years is no problem. I do wish to upgrade and change my phone every two years so I'll probably always end up paying $90 a month with tmobile anyways just like I pay with Sprint.

  8.

Why not use both. T-Mobile's $30 a month 5 gig plan can use LTE and you can tether your sprint phone or tablet to it.

Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I would be spending more money. I currently pay $92.12 a month for a single line with Sprint.

  9. Hi everyone, i've been a member for over a year now and I am also a sponsor. I love this site and everything that Robert does. If it wasn't for him, Sprint would've lost me as a customer. I am very excited for Sprint and their network vision and I am beginning to see the benefits of it now. I am in NYC so the rollout will take a lot longer than other markets to complete but my data speeds have begun to improve and I am very excited for Sprint in the coming years.

As many of you know, Tmobile just got rid of contracts and also offer unlimited data. Up until Tmobile announced that they were getting rid of contracts, I had never thought of leaving Sprint. Now that Tmobile got rid of their contracts and now offer the iPhone and are impleting LTE, joining them doesn't seem too bad. I love Sprint and I can't wait till they launch LTE in NYC. My contract ends November 27th of this year and my upgrade is on July 1st. I am debating whether I should wait until my contract ends and jump to Tmobile or upgrade in July and sign on for another 2 years.

I feel like I would be betraying this site and Sprint if I join Tmobile. Contracts do suck but at the same time, Sprint is stepping it up. Tmobile will be launching LTE in NYC soon. I don't like that Tmobile will be merging with Metropcs and I think they will begin using the name metropcs which I hate and I hope Dish doesn't buy Sprint.

I don't what to do so I am hoping your opinions will lead me to make the right choice come July.

  10. Welcome and as the previous post said, become a sponsor and you can see the updates for south carolina and the sites that have been converted to NV. South carolina is a third round market so it is only 24% completed. If all goes well, you can probably expect to see LTE in the 4th quarter of this year.

To become a sponsor you have to donate any amount you can to help support this website. You will have access to so many more features and information. It is so totally worth it.

As more sites begin to get converted to network vision, believe me, the wait will be totally worth it. I live in NYC and I have the 4S and although I can only connect to 3G, I am beginning to see much better speeds for 3G. Even around 6pm, I still get over 1mbps. I was streaming live CNN yesterday on 3G without buffering.

Once again, welcome and Robert the administrator of this site can assist you with all the questions you have but first snoop around the site because you will find the answers to your questions before you can even ask him.

  11. In Manhattan I get great 3G NV speeds. Amazing. I average 1.20 mbps down. Currently im in weehawken, NJ which is real close to the lincoln tunnel and my speeds are great and it's 8:01pm on a saturday and I am getting 1.50mbps down to 1.99mbps down. I think i saw in the maps that there is an upgrade 3G tower nearby. I love it. I am streaming youtube without buffering and browsing webpages at full speed. Sprint is really stepping it up.

  12. First post and all. :) Decided to join since LTE finally became available in my area of Queens, 11432. I had randomly checked out Sensorly in the beginning of February, saw it was available, and have had LTE on ever since. Here's my screenshots from tonight:

I'm literally in the heart of that dark purple and I have about 3-4 bars indoors, 4-5 outdoors. Strength is -97 dBm 43 asu. I'm actually surprised that I'm not getting 20 or 10 Mbps peaks easily but I guess it's being capped right now.

Wow! I live in 11432. I have the 4S so I dont have access to LTE but I wasnt aware that LTE was beginning to show up in this area. My local tower still hasnt received NV so during the day, 3G is useless. Speeds are terrible. 2 months ago it received a speed upgrade and speeds were good but now they are terrible again. I am hoping it receives NV soon. At home I use wi-fi so I am in no hurry for it to receive NV but it'd be nice to run speed tests to see the much better and improved speeds NV will bring once it is updated.

  13. Weird encounter last night my signal kept spazzing out, lol it went from low to full and kept doing that back and forward for 2 hours, at first I thought it was my phone so I turned it off, problem still persisted so I guess they working on my tower again. Today I was traveling the Bronx and Sprint speeds are now decent at least IMO I was loading images and website rather quickly.

    Chris

3G speeds have definitely gotten so much better in the Bronx. A few months back 3G was useless. It was horrible. But lately I can stream videos on youtube and browse the web. All this waiting around is finally beginning to pay off.

  14. I'm getting this box with a little o next to the sprint bars. it's literally in most places in brooklyn and then it finally goes to 3G.

    Never was like that before.

    http://i49.tinypic.com/295xv2r.jpg

I was in Brooklyn about 2 weeks ago and my iPhone 4S was also showing the 'o'. Im hoping that was because towers are being updated to NV but who knows for sure. Just have to be patient and hope that all this waiting around will pay off at the end. I was considering leaving Sprint last year but decided to stay. My contract ends in November and im really hoping that by then, Sprint would have completed the NYC NV updates in most parts of the market. My upgrade is in July so hopefully LTE is in most parts of the NYC market, otherwise i'll just wait till november to decide about my future with Sprint.

  15. I must say that I am surprised that NYC had 81 updates today. First time I see a number like that. I guess Sprint really is pushing to launch NYC soon. They still have a lot of 3G updated towers and very few 4G towers, except in the bronx but that is fine with me since I have the 4S and I cant upgrade to the iPhone 5 till July for LTE speeds but I have been having much better 3G speeds around NYC. Can't wait till my tower is updated.
