  1. If sprint can deploy 800 cdma on every tower that they can it will help with voice coverage/capacity and provide an additonal 1x advanced carrier tto deploy 4x usage to help shut down a 1x carrier at 1900 mhz

    The Nexus 5X has a highly smudge prone screen. Clean it, then 30 seconds later, it is smeared again. All reportedly use Corning Gorilla Glass 3, but the 2014 Moto X and 2015 Moto X Pure Edition stay clean far better than does the Nexus 5X. Maybe differences in oleophobic coating quality are at issue. I am ready to move on from LG in the Nexus line.

    I don't have smudging issues on mine. Maybe the oleophobic coating has worn off a bit more with age.

  3. I could be wrong, but I believe it's possible on sites where they have 2 NV 1.0 antennas per sector. Usually this is only seen at high capacity sites currently. They put CDMA on one antenna and LTE on the other. I think it would allow for either 4x4 or 4x2, but I'm not certain. In theory they could go back and add a second set of antennas to every site, but I don't think it's likely any time soon.

    In Ericsson and Samsung markets there are low key deployments for 4x2 MIMO. They are going back to the sites and adding a second dual band antenna to enable 4x2. It isn't really for CDMA capacity anymore.

  4. The difference between AWS and 700MHz is also greater than the difference between PCS and 800MHz so one would expect a greater difference in dim on Verizon vs on Sprint. Additionally, VZW is not running 700MHz LTE and CDMA off of the same panel. As a result, the power output is not limited by CDMA like how it is on Sprint. It's easy to lowball and pick on the 3dbm but it's obvious he is using this as a range.

    In addition, VZW and ATT run 10MHz of 700MHz LTE vs Sprint's 5MHz. 5MHz is more susceptible to interference, which limits the useable range.

  5. Sometime there is a delay between signal updates on the 5X between engineering screen and what signal check pro reported so I thought the same as you. I watched it long enough and compared to my Nexus 6 engineering screens and i eventually determined it matched.

    I thought that too, but the discrepancy between engineering screens and signal check doesn't make any sense. The reported 1x RX power from the engineering screen doesn't match the value for 1x or EVDO as reported by signal check.
  7. Picked up a used 5X last week from B&H Photo to replace my Nexus 5 which the WiFi had stopped working on. Today was my 5th day with the device as my daily driver and here are my impressions so far.

     

    Build: Solid. I'd say it's better than the OG Nexus 5. Much more stiff and feels great in the hand. The size is a good upgrade over the N5 in my opinion. The N5 has started to feel a little small to me.

     

    Performance: Great for everyday tasks, which is all I use it for. I don't game or anything so I don't have issues with the device overheating. It can get a little warm at times from the A57's being active but that will change with N. Battery generally lasts me all day, although this needs more testing.

     

    Network: Much improved over the N5. The LTE scan intervals are much shorter and the device holds on to LTE better from what I've seen. The only strange issue I have seen is the poor 3G reception. Signal check generally reports that 1x and EVDO around 5dBm+ worse than the Nexus 5. I'm beginning to wonder if this is a reporting error because I am still able to make and receive calls, texts and MMS even when SC reports 1x800 at -110dBm and EVDO at -100dBm. Another reason I suspect some sort of bug is that the engineering screens report 1x receive power of -95dBm when SC reports -110dBm. 

     

    Overall a great upgrade from my 2 year old Nexus 5. I tried out the N preview for a bit but it has some battery issues so I reverted back to MM. The N preview definitely kept the phone cooler because it turns off the A57 cores under normal use. N should bring much improvement to the phone on the performance and battery side.

    Specific generations of the technology matter. As for VoLTE, it is a completely different beast with lots of different implementations. T-Mobile has a different VoLTE implementation than Verizon, for example. I might have to write an entire technical post on this and ON VoLTE standardization. It's going to be a while, though, before the dust settles in that regard.

    The VoLTE problem is on its way to being solved. The GSMA just finalized an global standard for VoLTE called OMD (Open Market Device). More info here

  9. Their deployment strategy is going to vary based on individual cell needs. There's not a hard and fast rule for how they set up every site.

     

    Sprint is already aggressively refarming voice capacity for LTE. In the Dayton OH area they are down one 1x and one EVDO carrier with 10MHz FDD LTE in PCS. The only other voice carrier is the one in SMR. The only way they can squeeze more LTE capacity out of PCS at this point is when EVDO is shut down, which will probably be a ways out.

  10. Yeah, it is the band 12 Lower 700 MHz A block from AT&T/Leap Wireless. Who knows how much T-Mobile had to pay for that chunk of spectrum, though? Financial terms were not disclosed. And do not expect any usable deployment until late this year or early next year.

    The deal doesn't actually close until Q4, so I highly doubt deployment this year.

    There's no way they can get new equipment by the end of 2017, with all the designing testing and production work that has to go with it. On top of all this, since 600MHz requires massive panels, they might have to restructure some sites. I'm calling them out on this, there's just no way end of 2017 is doable.

    Design and testing has probably already started so that the equipment vendors can bring products to market ASAP.

     

    Lots of people said they couldn't reach their EoY 2015 LTE coverage goal, and they ended up shattering it.

    Edit: also they took shots at Sprint for lowering capex

    They'll probably be able to in areas where there are no TV stations to move. That's a very limited rural area, but as long as the equipment is available it shouldn't be an issue.
  13. My point was about how it would affect Wifi and other consumer devices that run on close frequencies.

    If properly implemented with listen before talk and other mitigation technologies there won't be any issues. Radio equipment is designed to prevent stray harmful interference, unlike your typical Chinese electronics that don't have proper EM shielding and design.
