Following up on myself, my wife and I ventured to Wegmans for the first time since March this morning.  The T-Mobile rack at Hayfield now has a fourth antenna, that resembles (but is taller than) the Sprint Massive MIMO antenna on the rack below it.  Guessing this is the n41 gear.

Oddly, I checked for permits, and there's only electrical permits, and no antenna replacement/addition permit.  Not sure what to make of that.

i've seen this a lot around here too with permits not being pulled. several years ago i could check permit reports and have an idea of when upgrades might be starting. i don't know if cities have just relaxed on tower permits or they don't record them anymore or if t-mobile just isn't following the "rules" when it comes to permits, but most of the B71 upgrades that have happened around here over the past year i haven't seen permits for.

You cannot use B71 and N71 at the same time. It's one or the other. Just like you can't have B12+B71, you also can't have B71+N71 or B12+N71. Only one low band carrier (LTE or NR) can be used at a time.

I know you can't have B71 be the "anchor" band for 5G, but are you sure it can't get aggregated with the other LTE bands? according to what my phone was saying it was showing 5G as "connected" and i had 3xCA on LTE, the only bands around me are B66, B2, and B71. So that to me says i had 3xCA with those LTE bands plus N71 5G.

Can a phone not connect to LTE on Tower 1 and 5G on Tower 2?  With how dispersed 600MHz deployments are, seems like this would actually improve n71 coverage on NSA devices.

Might be a trade off worth having? Otherwise n71 coverage really goes down the toilet.

thats how t-mobiles implementation of 5G works. ALL towers have the EN-DC stuff enabled to be anchors for 5G, even if they aren't broadcasting 5G themselves. So you can be connected to LTE from an anchor tower and 5G from a different tower. Thats why you see so many complaints about the 5G speeds, your phone says 5G since you are connected to a LTE anchor thats close, but the 5G could be coming from miles away. EDIT: plus you don't have to be connected to 5G for the 5G icon to show, just being connected to LTE with EN-DC enabled will show the 5G icon.

what i haven't figured out is when you do a speedtest, is your speed only coming from the 5G carrier? or is it aggregating the LTE from the close tower plus the 5G from the further tower?

I know for sure if you are connected to LTE and 5G from the same tower it is all aggregated together, I've almost hit 400mbps connected that way.

  4. Posting this here as I assume it's Verizon..... In the pic the round cylinder out the top back have been installed on light poles in our area for a couple of years now. Recently the triangle of panels started showing up on the same poles that had the cylinder ones. Anyone know what the triangle ones are?

As an update to the 5G discussion -- I have received several diagnostic reports from users who noted they were connected to 5G at the time (thanks!), however I have not seen an example where the API is reporting any 5G data. Everything has appeared as regular LTE for now.

Please keep sending me reports, I am sure eventually we will have a device that reports it properly! At a minimum it will need to be on Android 10, because the 5G reporting routines did not exist in earlier versions.

    -Mike

i have a feeling that the report i sent in i was really connected to LTE, like signal check was showing, but my phone is showing 5G..... once i get around to an actual tower that has been upgraded with B71 i can do some more testing and send more reports in. I have a feeling though that tmobile is showing 5G when when connected to LTE on the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G phone. Speed tests and signal check info remain consistent if i'm on "5G" and drop it down to LTE manually.....

Anyone from the Beta Crew seeing obvious problems with the latest SCP update? Likely on Android 10? Many (including myself) are seeing no cell data, or data that suddenly stops updating or appearing. I've been flooded with reports but I didn't notice any from this group. I'm likely going to be pushing out an update shortly that makes one adjustment that I think is causing the major problem -- setting the compiler target to API 29 (Android 10). I'm going to try rolling it back to API 28 and see if things return to normal.

From a developer standpoint, the Android 10 network routines appear to be a disaster. Several long-established parts of the API are simply not working as designed. My best guess is they went too far trying to limit background processes to save power, but that's pure speculation on my part at the moment. Reporting bugs to the Android development team is a long, slow process but once I can narrow things down a bit I will do my best. This may be a bumpy road.

i sent a diagnostics report from my app last night, oneplus 6 on android 10 where its not updating data very frequently.

Interesting I think I saw one of those in northern Iowa. Almost mistakened it for a Hexadecaport, but upon closer look I didnt see the right RRUs.

I would not be surprised if it was t-mobile B71 upgrades, i've found 2 towers with it live in central iowa in the past couple of weeks now.

How's the transition been for you from I-wireless to T?

no issues here! the network in central iowa was already broadcasting as T-Mobile while iWireless was in control. So there weren't any transition issues or anything for me.

Yep B41 is what turns on LTE+ icon...however in Ames there is no B41 but I still had the icon on.  I wonder if when they CA 2x Band 25 if this causes the phone to display the LTE+ icon too?  Does SignalCheck give any indication that there is CA going on?  Here is the screenshot for those who asked.  This was in a B41 area.

there are 2 towers in ames with B41 installed. even though i don't have sprint i still check for permits, there hasn't been a new B41 install for awhile, at least a year now. you can see where the B41 is in ames off of sprints coverage map.

Curious how to tell in Samsung ##debug screen. Would the bandwidth show more than 10mhz on band 25 if it were aggregating? I'm in Urbandale and it alternates between 10mhz on band 25 and 20mhz on band 41. Guessing I'm not getting LTE plus from this tower (WDM Marriott).

LTE + is the name they use for B41, so if you see B41 you are on "LTE +". the WDM marriott definitely has B41, it got it back when i was still on sprint and i confirmed it from that tower.

I was able to connect to USC yesterday afternoon. Works great. Shortly after that Tmobile called me to check if it was working. I pushed her on what they changed/fixed. She didn't know but said a lot of "technical jargon" was being passed around in emails regarding my account that was over her head. She did mention one of the last things they did was whitelist my phone. Not sure why they would need to do that because I'm using a Tmobile branded V30. She also said other customers were having issues connecting to USC. I did swap my SIM over to a Pixel 2XL and it wouldn't connect..so the phone does matter. I've used quite a bit of USC data now and it's showing as native usage on my account.

I tested trying to carry a VoLTE call from USC to Tmobile and it won't do it :(. It just stayed on USC network even into Tmobile native and what finally dropped the call was when I crossed into NE where USC don't have VoLTE enabled. I was hoping it would be seamless coverage like Verizon and their LTEiRA partners. I can cross between their networks and it won't drop the call.

nice! glad they got it working, also nice to have confirmation that there is something they can/need to do on their end to get it to work if its not. yeah i didn't expect the call to be able to carry over since iwireless doesn't have VoLTE enabled on the network in Iowa yet. i'm hoping that along with a few other changes, is on t-mobiles radar to do right away once they take over iwireless!

I still haven't been able to connect anywhere in Iowa. The last couple days I've been all over Iowa and I've never connected. I sent an email to John Ledger which got me in contact with executive response team. They have been looking into it and they let me know last Monday there was a problem on the backend of my account and they have escalated it up to engineering.

So you always have to manually connect? It won't automatically connect on it's own? What about when your on a VoLTE call on TMobile and you cross over to USC, would it hold the call? These are all scenarios I look forward to testing.

no it auto connects, i was just manually selecting it while testing things out. iWireless hasn't enabled VoLTE on their network so there is no VoLTE on tmobile in iowa...... so based on that i don't think calls will carry over from network to network.

glad they are getting something figured out for you! i haven't used a ton of data while on USCC but as far as i can tell its counting as native usage, not roaming.

I’ve been working in Dayton the last couple weeks and it won’t connect there either..that’s not to far from where you connected. I’ve been wondering if it could be a SIM issue? But I can connect to Vaeiro Wireless in NE and ATT HSPA just fine so I don’t think it is..

i went to howell's pumpkin patch on sunday, its south west a little bit from cumming, ia. i was definitely on the border of allowed US cellular towers to roam on. sometimes i was able to select US Cellular and connect to it, other times it wouldn't let me on. my guess is i had a tower N/NE of me that wasn't allowed it that it tried to connect to sometimes and another one S/SW from me that was allowing it.

could be a SIM issue.... but that would require someone from t-mobile to help out. might be time for an email to the executive support team. the amount of network you went through from SW iowa to dayton iowa should have been enough to get some kind of connection, so maybe its not on us cellular/network side....

Haha yea I knew you were here to. Like I said on reddit I’ve contacted support and also TForce and they aren’t any help at all. I’ve tried my SIM in iPhone 8, OnePlus 3, V30 and Pixel and they all refuse to connect.

Also my ATT Mobley hotspot line now connects to USC LTE. I wonder if a smartphone line on a VoLTE capable phone would work to..

thats so weird..... it has to be something on US cellular's end where they didn't get those towers setup to allow the connections, but yeah, where do you go to get help on that?!?!? if i'm in the des moines area and try and select us cellular it sits there for awhile and then comes back saying "unable to connect (maybe register) to this network at this time" but up in the huxley area it connects right away when i select it. so obviously they have the ability to control which towers allow people to roam on them, which points to it being on their end.....
