  1. Parts of Robert's first post in this link go into more detail on 800 and how it compares to other carriers spectrum.

    http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/32-network-vision-explained/

VZW holds 750, 850 Cellular, some 1900 PCS. and lots of 1700/2100 AWS

AT&T holds 700, 850 Cellular, 1900 PCS, a little 1700/2100 AWS, and almost all of 2300 WCS, except a small chunk Sprint owns.

T-Mobile holds a lot of PCS 1900 and a lot of 1700/2100 AWS.

  2. Totally off topic, but I am glad to see this thread being used again. There was a 2-week period when only like 5 posts were made... D: So yay!!!

Anyways... I am not the person who knows much about towers. So what is this "800 site" thing? Is it a faster spectrum?

Sprint holds 12MHz of 800 from Nextel that they are killing off on June 30.  That's enough for 1 CDMA-1x carrier for voice/text/data carrier and a  5x5 LTE carrier(same as what's currently deployed on PCS).

800 will help Sprint to compete on in building coverage and rural coverage.  800(SMR) isn't near as fragile as PCS as over long distances.  They need to deploy on this spectrum for the viability of the company.

So if you have the photon 4g(wimax), you will get cdma 1x-800(better voice coverage).

Then there's Clearwire's spectrum, which doesn't travel far at all, but they have so much spectrum, that they can really deploy som blazing fast LTE.

When new phones come out with 800(SMR), 1900(PCS), and 2600(BRS/EBS) Sprint will have an amazing portfolio of spectrum to deploy on.

  3. Here's the last public information Sprint gave about small cells.  Insiders may know more.  I would say at some point in 2014 once NV is close to done.  A similar time frame for LTE-A

Sprint's Tarazi promises HetNet focus in Network Vision 2.0
    October 4, 2012 | By Mike Dano

iyad%20tarazi.jpgIyad Tarazi, Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) vice president of network development and engineering, said the next phase of the carrier's Network Vision network modernization plan involves integrating small cells and Wi-Fi to create a seamless connection for users. In comments to FierceBroadbandWireless, Tarazi said Sprint's Network Vision 2.0 will integrate the carrier's CDMA network and its LTE networks at 1900 MHz and 800 MHz with picocells, femtocells and Wi-Fi. Specifically, Sprint is ramping up an LTE picocell deployment strategy with an initial focus on indoor deployments followed by outdoor deployments in 2013-2014. Alcatel-Lucent's (NASDAQ: ALU) lightRadio metrocell architecture and Samsung's small cell gear will play a role. Tarazi discusses Sprint's overall HetNet strategy in this Hot Seat.

  4. Ah that's cool I shouldn't have assumed everyone had a free hour at work to study this stuff today :) Dish plays a great game of poker and forced sprint into desperation but sprint sprint has closed every door they could think of with this latest deal. A big one being get it all wrapped up before clearwire runs out of money.

I only wish crest would have to sell their shares for 2.97

  5. I'm thinking they have 800mhz on the north side of Northfield, and I don't think it's listed on the maps here. I know the one on the west side has it, it's about 3 miles from my brother-in-law's house. I had some weird issues with my Note II on 800mhz though, and I see they downgraded my PRL to 2000 about a week ago. Which doesn't have any 800mhz scans in it.

Lots of that going around the forums. Hopefully if a real issue sprint can get it fixed up real quick or they maybe have to bring 800 up in clusters too or worse call up Qualcomm/Samsung.

    And what if Dish counters?

What? How would we know that? Also what opening do you see for dish to counter? Sprint added a lot of secure assurances this time around through backout fees, individual minority shareholder deals, moved up shareholder meeting and governance changes that allow for 50 percent approval. Dish's only shot is to make an offer SPRINT can't refuse or drag things out in court.

  7. Dish does not value the EBS at all.  Or at least Sprint doesn't think so.

Indeed, as the Clearwire Board recognized, DISH’s goal initially was to loot Clearwire’s BRS spectrum.

My new most likely worst case, bankruptcy:

The DISH Tender Offer coerces Clearwire stockholders into tendering
because if they do not tender, they will be left holding stock in a corporation that is
possibly subject to paralyzing corporate governance disputes and a coercive note
agreement, and which exists under the specter of a money damages award payable to
DISH if its illegal governance rights are not enforced. Until Sprint is successful on its
challenges to the unlawful corporate governance provisions, Clearwire will be in
corporate governance limbo with an uncertain board composition, uncertain rights for
DISH, and the inability to function as an ongoing entity. Even if Sprint is successful, DISH will seek money damages against Clearwire under the IRA

  8. What other PCS spectrum does Spring have in this market? Could they have put up a 10x10 LTE here?

Sprint wont be doing 10x10 any time soon.  Some/Most? of their current phones don't support 10x10.  If they were to use more spectrum, it would be to add another 5x5 in the PCS a-f blocks.  This is ignoring the 5x5MHz in 800 and 20MHz+ TDD BRS/EBS they will also be adding soon.

The Federal Communications Commission has informed the National Telecommunications and Information Administration that it plans to hold an auction for wireless spectrum in September 2014. By law, the FCC must give the NTIA 18 months notice of such auctions. The auction will be for two spectrum bands, 1695-1710MHz and 1755-1780MHz. The NTIA had already indicated that it would reassign the 1695-1710MHz block from government to commercial use. The FCC has to auction off and license that spectrum for use by February 2015. Similarly, the FCC needs to reallocate and license the 2155-2180 MHz band by 2015. The CTIA and wireless industry in general would like to see the 2155-2180MHz block paired with the 1755-1780MHz block for commercial use. The 1755-1780MHz block is currently being used by the government, though the government is researching the possibility of sharing that spectrum with commercial entities.

I don't see any reason why AT&T can't purchase a lot of this spectrum.  It's not like T-Mobile needs it and Verizon may be limited in that auction with the enormous amount of AWS they have yet to deploy.  I don't think many agree with me that AT&T will do this, but it's certainly a possibility.

  10. Not exactly.  WiMAX spectrum usage is all over the map.  Cutting its BRS/EBS spectrum resources back to even 80 MHz would hamper Clearwire in its ability to continue to operate WiMAX and deploy TD-LTE.  Clearwire needs as much BRS/EBS spectrum as it can for the next several years as it runs WiMAX and TD-LTE in parallel.

Clearwire's ability to afford running a Wimax network may decrease significantly if Sprint can move move most/all customers off of the network before usage based billing kicks in.

  11. You really want a partnership with Clearwire/Ergen after

    1. Existing Clearwire mess where Sprint can't get spectrum deployed where their customers need it?

    2. Ergen has shown how much of a control freak he is?

At the very least, I want the Clearwire name gone and Sprint to get their BRS spectrum back for themselves.  Anything less is a major disappointment to me.

It boggles my mind how so many people who can afford to spend $110 dollars a month on their cell phone plan can't save up $200 to get the top end phones. You're gonna spend over $2500 during your contract on your phone and you're gonna settle for a sluggish, outdated device just to save $200?

Welcome to the US wireless game.

I'd rather see everything switch over to standard networks technology and bands. Have the majority of sales setup like Europe. Contract free offers for everything with identical plans just at a lower price point since the company is not recouping cost for device subsidy, but you can choose to pay for the device entirely up front instead. None of this separate prepaid/postpaid garbage we have now with carrier subsidies being the majority to keep consumers "in line".

What does switching to the same bands mean to you?

The original cellular bands are all used up. That's why new ones are created for more bandwidth.

It's not practical for all carriers to have a small amount of spectrum in all bands either.

And countries have different legacy uses for spectrum that might not let them all use world standard bands.
