  1. Hey, at the very least, you have outdoor baseball now. Your masses of fans used to drive down I-35 here for outdoor baseball, and the Twins were good, making the situation insufferable for Royals fans in their own stadium.

Yeah, but you have waterfalls.  There was a baseball game in Sega Genesis, not sure which, but you could fly around the stadiums, and those waterfalls made me think your ballpark was nicest park ever.  The Twins stadium is pretty amazing too, though.

  2. I went to the Twins game tonight.  Essentially didn't have service, even though I had full bars.  It was interesting as the phone sometimes switched to 1x.  Not sure what told the phone to do that.  Something in the congested airwaves I guess.  I keep my head high though, downtown will get the major upgrade sooner than later.

At some points I got 4g and that was quite fast, however.

VZW 4g was worthless though.  So it wasn't just Sprint.

  3. Before you call USCC's Mississippi Valley AWS E block 10 MHz license "useless," take into account a few considerations.

USCC does not have a great many major markets, but it does have several within its core territories. In the Mississippi Valley REA, USCC has current major markets St. Louis (PCS) and Knoxville (Cellular). Plus, potential major markets Kansas City, Memphis, and Nashville are proximate to its current footprint.

Also, USCC does not hold the Mississippi Valley AWS E block 10 MHz license directly. Rather, Barat Wireless, a designated entity, actually controls the license. USCC has only authorization from Barat to use the license for USCC deployment. USCC is in the process of acquiring full interest in Barat, but the FCC has not yet approved the transaction. See the application linked below:

    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/ApplicationSearch/applMain.jsp?applID=6837973

So, if USCC does swap any AWS spectrum to VZW, it will not likely dump its entire Mississippi Valley license. But it might partition and trade off AWS in some Mississippi Valley BEAs outside of its current/potential core markets.

That is my expert analysis. And that will be $2000. You can cut Robert a check.

    ;)

This looks to be the cut up you expected, except the potential markets were included too.  I wonder how Barat/USCC split the check?  Hopefully USCC will just acquire Barat.  It seems to me like USCC has shelved plans to expand.

On the other side of this purchase, this should allow T-Mobile to compete immediately in these pretty good sized markets.

The spectrum covers a total of 32 million POPs in 29 markets in the Mississippi Valley region, including Kansas City, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans and St. Louis. T-Mobile said the additional spectrum will allow it to launch "an incremental roll-out" of LTE network coverage to new markets and expand its existing LTE bandwidth in the region.

U.S. Cellular said it will partition and retain a portion of the license covering its markets in Knoxville and eastern Tennessee "to meet future operating needs."

It's great to see US Cellular focusing their spectrum holdings and coverage regions.  They are absolutely doing the right thing.  They're also divesting spectrum while it is still valuable, much better than the fire sale I thought was coming.

  5. On the same note, In downtown Maple Grove (Main Street) there is a similar situation.  High voltage, but only 3g.  I've seen no movement on that tower, but it's at the end of my driveway.  Hopefully they work on all of this in a similar time frame.

  6. Looking again at the site, even though it's been kicking out LTE for months, it appears to still be operating through the legacy antenna system.  It's at the top of a high voltage line tower, with Nextel antennas half way up the same tower.  Perhaps the plan is to do the full nv upgrade and remove the Nextel equipment all in one project, since I remember them having to take those power lines out of service when they originally built the Sprint side of the site.

Seems like sound logic to me.

  7. I live in SW Maple Grove (about 1/2 mile south of Weaver Lake) and recently (past several weeks) my signal has been greatly attenuated.  I'm no longer able to get LTE unless I'm upstairs standing next to a window!  I've also frequently seen my signal completely disappear for short periods of time.  Sometimes the phone (Galaxy SIII) will start roaming.  I finally called Sprint today and they said that the issue is due to be resolved tomorrow.  I have to assume they know what's going on.  Crossing my fingers!!!

Hmm they may have shut off access a tower around you in Corcoran.  Sometimes this will happen for a couple days while they bring up a new site close by, adjust and test.  Hopefully this is the case!  Remember that LTE is not guaranteed or even expected to stay on before the market is officially launched.

  8. Is it typical for a cell site's 3g connection to get really bad during the NV process? The site on Technology Dr in Eden Prairie frequently times out on 3g if I can't pick up a 4g signal from it. Even when I'm right next to the tower and have great signal for data, speed tests keep showing no connection, web won't load. If it's typical, that's fine for a while during the upgrade, but if it's not, I'll give Sprint a call and have them put in a ticket for that site.

It's not uncommon at all. There's certainly a possibility they messed with something relating to the current signal/back haul. Hopefully we aren't far from getting some more NV 3g around the cities too.

  9. Completely understandable. I just wish there was a way to lower the bandwidth required to run them. I mean, its in the very nature of people to want to know what kind of speeds they should expect considering how unreliable historical speeds have been. I usually run a speedtest if i am in a new area and have issues streaming google music. Maybe im one of the few people that likes to know what im dealing with technology wise. Obviously i would be more cautious if i had a limited bandwidth plan on another carrier. It's the abusers you have to watch out for...running multiple speedtests..daily!

I hijacked the thread ranting on a pet peeve, sorry.  I think a major issue is that speedtest has become so popular even for people who aren't geeks.  It's also become the first thing to do when someone gets LTE. /rant

On another note, are the Baraboo towers in the Milaukee or Minnesota markets?

  10. There are some areas where due to signal evdo is not available. This will happen even more with 800smr launches in areas where 800smr will be available but PCS evdo or LTE will not reach.

Yes this will happen, but more common than that, areas that only had 1x will get EVDO and LTE.  I'm very excited about that major change.

  11. Sprint needs to avoid bidding wars in spectrum when every other spectrum sale in the world is pulling in lower than expected value. Time is their friend now . It's time for sprint to focus on its balance sheet for a couple years. I like h about as much as aj at this point. If dish can't get a deal with t–mobile, that's a lot of great spectrum potentially back on the market.
