I would like to know this as well... Too bad no one has replied with any insight.
I can definitely say that on Tmo, the Nexus 5 does very well holding on to signal inside buildings.

get the dreaded "expired" message from me. I will find you.
Wine and cheese doesn't expire it only gets better with age ;D
Can I be wine and cheese? I'm a poor college student!
Also, safe travels!

For headphones I set volume to 2, and gain to -1 Its so much better. What's your brightness set to? Mines at 30% and I'm using battery guru also so that might make a difference.

I probably sound like a noob, but why put the gain in negative?

I'd guess for the same reason people enjoy over saturated screens instead of life like looking screens. People have been told that's the way things "really" look and are dumb enough to believe it lol. By the way skip revision 39 of the kernel if you can, it was causing lock screen issues for me and I had to force my phone to reboot to fix it. Revision 40 has had zero issues for me though.

Thank you for the advice. I actually have revision 40 installed.. So far, honestly, the battery life isn't that great. Everyone online says they get about 4 hours of screen on time. I got 2.5 (which is what I normally get), but I'll give it another day or two. I do love being able to make the speaker and headphones louder. I have come to love the more real colors of the N5, and I used to love the HTC One (M7) screen.

It works fine with xposed, I'm using it right now. Just flash the stock 4.4.2 image before taking the update (its simpler that way or the stock kernel is available on XDA).
To reset the color profile just flash an older version of the kernel and flash back the new one; unless you've changed things all your settings should revert to stock after each reboot.

Yeah i restarted the device and the colors went back to normal. I found some hideous profiles. Why any one wants colors that are ridiculously blown out is beyond me.
Go to load profile and select the "stock" one.
Thank you! I found it! Now I know for next time.

Crap. I started messing around with the color profile and now I can't set it back to normal. I tried restarting the N5 and erasing the app and reinstalling but nothing. How do I reset the color profile to the regular nexus5 colors?

Does it affect updates and I have xposed installed with a couple of other apps that require root access. Any interference with that? You just boot into recovery and flash it. For instance for twrp its install, select the kernel, and swipe to install. As to what it does, it puts a custom kernel over the pre installed one. Other than that I don't really know lol

Is there any special way of flashing a kernel? And what exactly does flashing a kernel do? (I googled it but it all sounds really complicated)

I'm thinking it'll be the normal logo, because Google won't only push the update to select phones and I doubt the other carriers want the spark logo associated with their network.

I was only joking! It would be funny if that was the reason

Hmmm. If I read this correctly, it's also the same reason why when you post something on Facebook it redirects you first to a bit.ly redirecting page. It tracks this to know where the link got clicked (IIRC), it's all part of statistics, and it helps tailor certains ads and/or links to other websites for the things you seem to like. IDK why tapatalk would do it, but that might be an answer.

Maybe the reason the N5 hasn't received the Spark update is because Sprint wants the data logo to be the spinning Wal-Mart thing, and Google just wants it to be the regular LTE symbol...?

(trolling btw, but an amusing thought)

Do you use screen protectors?
Nope. The last one I had was the glass one and it cracked

All my sunglasses are polarized, it helps with my migraines. Now I will say that it does distort things slightly(very slightly) but not to where I can't make anything out at all unlike with lcd tv's where I can't see anything. Anyway, I didn't have an issue with my evo, one, one max, n5 or m8.
That's interesting. I can probably recreate it later when I get home. I'll take a video of it if it happens.

put the sqawheetus on the 4 carriers
Put the what?
Also if this happens it will be interesting to see how Google will make money from it, or how their pricing structure will be.

I haven't had this issue with any recent device I have owned regardless of what position I am holding it in.
Are you using non-polarized sunglasses? It happens all the time to me with the N5 in landscape mode.
-Luis
-
i dont have a screen protector on mine, and its very difficult to see whats on the screen with polaraized shades on. non-polarized shades dont have that problem.
This happens with the N5 as well, and it used to happen with the original One.
That is a common issue with LCD displays and polarized glasses. It is possible that previous LCD displays on phones you guys have used something to compensate for that like a circular polarization filter. I'm curious, does this happen in both landscape and portrait mode? IPads will do this in portrait mode and not landcape, I may have that backwards.
I tried out a test model and it happened in landscape mode, just the like n5.

Just my 2 cents. I don't like this new One over the old One. Too long, too iPhone 3g-ish, not enough cowbell...

Users on another forum are reporting the same thing - http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/373755-youtube-app-draining-battery.html
Ok, well it's good to know I'm not the only one. It seems to have stopped now. Strange that YouTube would act up like that.

Anyone been having issues with YouTube draining the battery? I put my phone to charge last night at 31% and woke up this morning at 15%. I thought maybe I didn't set it correctly, but under the battery stats it shows that it was charging all through the night. YouTube has taken up about 20% of my battery. I rebooted but the phone is still charging extremely slow.
Any input would be nice.

The pings will be higher, somewhere between 200&300ms higher than lte BUT if you are on a capped 4g plan on tmobile and you have gone over your limit the 4g is throttled to under 200kbps, often quite a bit under. Switching to unthrottled edge used to actually allow for higher throughput (at the cost of latency), however this was before LTE (I switched to tmos unlimited a while back), refarming could have crippled edge but if someone is on tmo and has hit their cap it doesn't hurt to try edge. It would be terrible for voip but not so bad down caching a youtube video with tubemate or possibly some browsing.
When you say ping times do you mean the overhead inherent in the technology or that your ping is always around 52ms? Your ping time will depend what you are pinging as well as the overhead. The guys hitting 50-300GB a month are on the unlimited plan and in theory won't ever be throttled (unless I find them).
Hmm, I'll try it out next time I'm throttled down again. And I'm a little out of it atm so maybe I'm not making much sense. But even when throttled when doing speed test the ping times are normally 52ms.
-Luis
-
Oh they do on some plans. I sometimes just fill $10, and get the $3 a day plan just to see if they've made any improvements, and they throttle after 200MB. I've been curious to as how slow it really is, and well it couldn't even complete speed test, or mmost web pages.
I think you're referring to the Free Tablet Data. After 200mb they do not throttle you, they cut you off (IIRC). So yeah refilling is the only way to go. On their smartphone basic plans is where you have "unlimited" data, but throttled after a certain amount, unless you're truly unlimited high speed.
-Luis
P.S. I apologize for all the replied I've made, I should have multiquoted.
-
Turn off 4G and you will get unthrottled edge which can be faster depending on the network but it's worth a try.
The ping times on LTE are much faster than EDGE, normally around 52ms. I haven't tried on EDGE but I can imagine it's much higher cause of the nature of the technology.

Could it be that maybe it is being sent out by Sprint? I mean Sprint has their database of phones that are active on it's network, just like the update that went out to the N7 for Verizon. Just a thought...? I understand Google sends out the update, but if it's carrier specific then Sprint might be having a say in this, me thinks.
