One more thing to note.

A lot of the tablets are riding on the coattails of the r&d from the phones. There is significant cost in development that is built into the price structure of the phones. It all costs money someplace.

Okay, we will even go with a AJ's $50 price point. It is still not even close. There is a crap load full of markup on these things. No doubt. And if subsidies were scrapped and people knew what they paid for devices, prices would come down. Period.

I don't see that much of a hardware difference to justify a $350 dollar difference. Nobody said it was cheap to build a device at the same time at some point making a device should become cheaper over time.

Nexus 7 has no cellular chipset, much cheaper screen, and doesn't have to fit in your pocket.

Not to say one is better than the other (I have both) and to avoid an OS debate there seems to be more information on Apples cost than others.

 

"IF" (according to Google searches) it cost Apple around 200.00 to make an iPhone 5, does the Samsung Galaxy S3 or Optimus G have anything that would justify a much bigger cost?

 

Doesn't Foxconn make handsets for various vendors?

You apparently are not aware that apple is gouging customers with at least a 40% profit margin before it even ships to retailers.

Ok, let's try this again. Right now, the only device in the tablet market pushing the screen, processor, and build quality of the current crop of high end smartphones is Apple. All the cheaper stuff compromises something to drop the cost.

That said, even the Nexus 10 is up there.

I couldn't care less who makes it, but and yes, they are in it to make money. A business will sell a product for as much as the market will support. Don't like the price, don't buy it. If it sits on shelves, prices come down.

Either way, if you think making these devices is cheap, I challenge you to find some investors and build one.

If you think that consumers are literally paying $200 for on contract smartphones, then, no, they are not too expensive. However, if you understand that consumers are actually paying roughly $600 for on contract smartphones because of subsidies, then, yes, they are significantly overpriced.

The cheap tablets would be equivalent to the prepaid android devices. Not high end, but functional.

Price a 3G ipad once. That would be the equivalent device to compare to a high end Android or the iPhone. There are much cheaper units available.

So, given the specs, I don't think $650 or so is a bad price for something like a current iPhone or Galaxy S.

Valid point. The only reason that came to mind is that is the only thing for miles. Irma isn't so much a town as it is a house and a gas station.

It may be on a main fiber channel though. If the tower is the one I think it is, it's right off 51, and the trunk runs right up the east side if memory serves.

I'm on my way up there shortly. Anyone have a plot point for the tower in question?

Not at all. Consider the technology in them, and they're actually pretty reasonable.

It's cold, I'm freezing, and the bike is parked for the winter. Winter in Cheddarland!

Anyhow, I found this site while looking for info on sprint networks. I've been an AT&T customer for several years, but I needed something that would work where my phone was failing. Based on co-worker recommendations, I'm giving Sprint a try. 1 week in, I'm happy as a clam in mud.

A little background: I'm a prior IT professional, with a secondary degree in mechanical engineering. I'm a giant nerd, especially in the mobile space. I've worked in everything from building and designing DSL systems, to working on programmable ECM's for the motorcycle performance aftermarket.

Currently, I'm an LTL truck driver. IT was too sporadic up here, and nothing else pays quite as well, considering the job is so easy.

I'm an avid motorcycle nut, and prior racer. I'm more into sport-touring and long distance riding now. I still rock the occasional track day. I'm prepping for an attempt to get into the Iron Butt Rally in a few years.

I will openly admit, I have an addiction to mobile tech. I typically carry 2-3 active lines with me, and I have a hard time deciding between Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Now, adding another carrier into the mix, I'm totally hosed... But hey, if you have to have a habit, have one that returns something.

I'm also an aspiring tech and travel journalist. Kind of a late start, but I went after the degree I was convinced would make money, rather than pursuing my passions. A wife and kids slows the process a bit.

Anyhow, sorry for the novel. I'm going back to filling my head full of more sprint tech. Nice site by the way!

If you know anyone in Irma, WI, they might scout for some 4G as there is an LTE complete tower there. Granted, it's kinda out of the way, but this means we should start to see more towers complete here in the next couple of weeks. Good news for the Wisconsin market!

If nobody has done it, I can probably buzz that tower on the way to Tomahawk tomorrow. If I'm running the north route again (should be), I have a pickup pending up there.

Just wondering if northern Wisconsin market will get NV before sprint run out of cash flow. Data here is good in terms of speed. VZW and att both have LTE here now. I live up in central Wisconsin. Thanks

I know this is a bit old, but I would like to know where you saw AT&T LTE in northern Wisconsin, aside from Green Bay. HSPA+ ends in Merrill and the whole northwoods area is all Edge still. It also dies south of Wausau in Knowlton, and goes back to Edge.

If they're getting LTE up north before we even get 3G in Point, I'm porting our whole family plan over to Sprint tomorrow!
