  1. What's different about Shentel that Robert doesn't get info from his Sprint sources about upgrades? Is it not part of Sprint? If now why do we care if they get LTE towers?

Shentel runs and owns the network in a small area of the country. This is branded as Sprint and you as a customer have ubiquitous access between Sprint and Shentel areas. Sprint does all their marketing/support, Shentel maintains the network. It covers parts of MD/VA/PA. They are one of the last remaining Sprint "affiliate" markets.

Robert obvoiusly gets information from somewhere within Sprint. Since Sprint doesn't own the network in Shentel areas, and Shentel is in control of the network here, he doesn't get that information. Shentel is working with Alc-Lu on the upgrade so those are the only two sources of potential information. I care about the Sprint network in this area, since that is where I reside?

  2. Back in July I had issues with my EVO and needed to call customer support. Always got an American when I called. Just had to call for activation issues regarding my moms line and it's now apparently been outsourced to India. I haven't seen anything in the news about this. Anyone else experience this?

  3. I was looking at the completed NV sites and I was rather struck by how Samsung (in Chicago) has 800 Mhz 3G sites live, is their some difficulty in covering Chicago or is Samsung more technically proficient that they alone have the 800 band live, where as Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent haven't yet? I have to say Sprint has certainly kept things exciting, I can't wait to see what they have in mind for the future under Softbank.

I would say they made a large push to get 800mhz up and running due to being spectrum constrained there.

  4. Directly from the transcript:

We still anticipate that we will be able to complete Network Vision projects by year-end 2013 for the original budget projection of 115 million. We had planned to launch LTE at the end of the third quarter, but delays from our vendor related to logistics execution and material shortages has pushed our timeline back several months. We now plan to launch LTE just prior to Thanksgiving on sites that carry approximately 37% of our current 3G data usage and cover approximately 45% of our 2.1 million covered POPS.

By year-end the sites where LTE will be in service will carry approximately 50% of our current 3G data usage, and will cover just over 50% of our covered POPS. The service will be available to our customers along Interstate 81, from (inaudible) north through Winchester, Virginia, Martinsburg, West Virginia and Hagerstown, Maryland. We also have significant coverage in the Greater Harrisburg, Liquorville, and Hershey, Pennsylvania areas.

  5. I don't believe they mentioned the cities that they wanted to launch before Thanksgiving, but I believe they mentioned wanting to launch Harrisburg, Hershey, and York before year-end. The transcript should be posted online in a day or two if you want to verify.

They did mention where they plan on launching but I missed the totality of it. I remember he said the I81 corrider from Harrisonburg, VA to Harrisburg, PA including the greater Harrisburg region. Seeing as I live there, thats what I tuned in to, but I agree, we'll have to check the transcript once seekingalpha has it posted.

  6. How hard would it be for them to offer 1 mifi supporting it and just have protection sites like clearwire did?

As much as that sounds possible, I doubt they want to invest in the infrastructure to actually build it out if they can't monetize it. Only offering a single mifi won't generate much income.

  7. I just went onto Sprint.com to pay my bill and saw an ad for a free SII. Obviously, the SII uses WiMax. I thought Sprint stopped selling WiMax phones?

They stopped introducing new WiMax devices but as far as I know still sell existing ones.

  8. Who's arguing? But like you said, back to the issue which is you don't have lte coverage and my response to that is Sprint is actively upgrading to network vision and things will get better soon, there are lots of towers that come online every single week. All in all progressive is moving along quickly unfortunately those specific areas that you frequent haven't been upgraded yet.

That and the issues are more pronounced in your market since Ericsson has had issues getting 3G up and running. Once 3G is live on NV things will improve greatly even in absence of LTE. The new sites that have gone live where I live give me a solid 2.5mb/s on 3G. Plenty for anything I currently need.

  9. I have a question for you guys...I'm able to get LTE at my house in a few places. I wanted to use my LTE connection to help seed a torrent for a very popular ROM. I'm not one to abuse tethering by any stretch, I usually only use it when I'm in a bind, but wanted to help get this file out to the masses and my home internet isn't that great.

I was able to run a speedtest with the speedtest.net app, and I was pushing 10.0-10.5 Mbps upload speeds. I thought that would be nice for a little while, but while running Wifi Tether 3.2-beta2 I was only pushing about 60kBps upload, which would come out to like 0.6Mbps. Anyone know why that would happen?

I've read that speedtest.net isn't all that accurate, but I thought that was a pretty big discrepancy so I wanted to see if you guys had any thoughts.

At face value, I'd wonder if you still had an LTE connection, or the signal degraded greatly. Outside of that, I would wonder if Sprint is cracking down on tethering on its new network.

  10. Why would the billing become problematic? You're dealing with Apple or Samsung.

Both the call and the data session can be continued on another carrier. The technology exists. It just has not been implemented.

What technology exists to hand a call from WCDMA on ATT to 1x on Sprint? Also, why would the carriers ever agree to this?

  11. More work in the York area. Water tower on the west side of 83, exit 24 at Emigsville, has just had NV panels installed (I believe). Interesting site though, only has what appears to be one sector towards the NNE, along 83 northbound. I did not see any other radio units on the tower.

Great pics. I would say either they aren't done, or due to the changes in equipment and signal strength, there was no need for the other sector of the tower any longer. Also, just as with many sites up here in Harrisburg, there is the large 800mhz capable panel on the right, and a smaller panel which looks like it is sized for 1900mhz only on the left. I haven't seen this configuration outside of Shentel markets.

  12. Sprint CEO: Customer losses aren't as scary as they look

The Sprint brand is still adding subs, as long as that's the case, I'd have to agree. This shows why it was so hard for them to shutter Nextel. Even though it was sucking up money and had a low ARPU, selling investors on the fact of losing subs never sits well. I applaud Hesse for having the balls to do it.

Robert I just noticed this site does not have old panels(legacy) just the 3 large ones..and also every panel has 3 of those square things(RRu) what does that mean?

Good pics, there should be one RRU for 800mhz, another for 1900mhz LTE and another for 1900mhz 1x/EVDO I believe per sector depending on the number of carriers.

  14. Update concerning the suburbs of Harrisburg to follow....

First, Shentel site just off of RT39, directly across from Lake Wildwood on Industrial Rd:

    Just upgraded, antennas installed:

Second, tower just across from State Police HQ on Elmterton Ave:

Just upgraded, still has lines attached to raise the antennas and the boxes from the antennas were laying on the outskirts of the site:

Third, Shentel site located on Crooked Hill Road, directly next to I81 near the post office. This has been upgraded for a few weeks:

Lastly, Shentel site on Commerce Drive, just behind the I81/Progress Ave exit. PPL was moving high tension lines on this pole. I find it hard to believe with all the otehr activity in neighboring sites, this isn't due to Shentel upgrades. No other high tension poles were being touched:

Overall I have a few thoughts... #1 I'm surpirsed at their site density. These sites are all located relatively near to each other. #2, they will be launching this area with from what I can see, most sites upgraded, definitely a higher percentage than Sprint's initial markets and lastly, Shentel is making very good time considering they only appeared to start towards the end of August with a true roll out.
