  1. Is a "license protection" site different from a regular cell site? I get that it's meant to satisfy an FCC requirement so license isn't lost.
  2. I always wondered what Verizon charges Sprint for roaming; do you know? Both for voice and data i.e. $/minute and $/MB
  3. They made billions - net! - using a natural resource they receved for free! How exactly are they being screwed? They can bid for spectrum if they want and use LTE broadcast. At least that way, they won't have gotten something for nothing.
  4. What right do the broadcasters have to resist spectrum reclamation? They were given the spectrum for free, they made money from advertising, then they starting making money from re-transmission fees. Now, they feel entitled to proceeds from the auction? @#$!?
  5. I'm talking long-term. On the handset side, savings are obvious: there are miltiple companies making LTE-only modem like Sequans. On network side, CDMA is dying, right? So like someone said, Sprint wants to get people off EVDO. My question was: does Sprint ALSO want to eventually shut down 1xA-800 for smartphones?
  6. l Yes but wouldn't the elimination of CDMA - network + handsets - more than offset the costs of adding some towers to fill-in VoLTE coverage gaps?
  7. What about 1xA on 800 MHz? Will Sprint eventually stop requiring CDMA for smartphones? I could seem them leaving 1xA-800 alone for M2M and Direct Connect since it's the best usage for the remaining sliver of spectrum. I know VoLTE is fragile but if 1xA is the only reason to require CDMA on phones, it seems they could save money overall - phones + infrastructure - by eventually adding VoLTE 800 and adding towers to take care of higher SNR requirements of VoLTE (tower spacing issue). They're not in the same position as GSM carriers that a) have at least HSPA+21 per 5MHz carrier capacity. have international compatibility with only 4 HSPA+ bands (or 5 if you want HSPA+ on AWS like Nexus 4).
  8. What about the cell phones of the 5mil customers? Would they be required to change phones?
  9. If they had bought USC, would they have converted any of USC towers to NV or just added channel cards to Sprint towers for additional capacity?
  10. What if Sprint had bought ALL of US Cellular? Would they have made all 5mil+ customers buy new phones?
  11. In the article that I posted, I think it does say that your contract is automatically "fulfilled" i.e. no ETFs if you're sold to Sprint.
  12. That was my other, unspoken question: did Sprint pay $480mil for spectrum or for spectrum+subscribers.
  13. I totally get that Sprint doesn't want the non-LTE flood BUT is Sprint in a position to take on the churn risk? Beggars can't be choosers, right? If it was Verizon, I would totally agree with your statement.
  14. What's the reason for this? If it's not a technical reason, then it's an unnecessary risk. If people are forced to change their phones, aren't they going to say, "Well, if I have to change phones, might as well look to see what T-Mobile and AT&T are offering"?
  15. I thought all CDMA phones, excluding MetroPCS and Cricket, had CDMA Band 0/1 (800/1900) support?
  16. Where do you have the "member level" post requirements? 100 posts - digital 250 posts - 1x etc.
  17. Why do U.S. Cellular customers have to purchase new phones in markets purchased by Sprint? http://articles.chic...print-spokesman Isn't U.S. Cellular CDMA?
  18. Does anyone have any inkling if Sprint will end up bidding for the 600 MHz spectrum? Sprint appears interested in participating in the auction, as indicated by their (very readable) submission to the FCC: http://apps.fcc.gov/...w?id=7022112071 In said proposal, they advocate for a TDD band-plan (pg. 22)
  19. I wasn't focused on competing with resources for voice but rather the burden of being obligated to maintain CDMA PCS for M2M when all other voice traffic has migrated to CDMA-SMR and VoLTE.
  20. http://www.fiercewir...down/2013-04-22 Why is Sprint tying up its network for peanuts? Admittedly, I don't know the spectrum layout for Sprint PCS so it's possible that it might have a sliver that can only hold a 1xRTT carrier. However, even if that is the case shouldn't Sprint at the very least only allow M2M modules work on its CDMA-800? That way, it can eventually clear out PCS to use solely for LTE.
  21. Ok, that makes sense. (meant to quote everyone's posts but you get the idea: I see the reasoning).
