  1. Personally, I think Big Content has duped the public into buying their argument that you, as an ISP customer, should pay for their traffic, rather than you or advertisers paying Big Content to cover the carriage costs for the traffic they generate. So while this is awesome for ESPN and the NFL, who can continue to make deals that make you pay for their content as part of your wired ISP or wireless service - because that won't violate this supposed "Net Neutrality" and the FCC won't make them offer their content to all ISPs on an equal basis - it's potentially not so awesome for consumers.

The biggest boosters of "Net Neutrality" are Netflix (who want you to think that your monthly subscription covers all their expenses, when you're paying your ISP to deliver their traffic, regardless of whether you're a Netflix sub or not - they don't want their sticker price to be $20+ a month to cover the huge amounts of data they're dumping on ISPs) and ad-supported, VC-money-hemorrhaging media like Ars Technica, Huffington Post, and Vox Media's properties, who regardless of ideology won't be able to sustain their "free content with spammy ads" business models if they have to pay to deliver their traffic to your front door like non-electronic media have to do (you don't pay the postal service to deliver magazines; you don't pay the newspaper delivery guy to deliver the morning paper).

If "Big Content" should pay for their traffic, what exactly am I paying my ISP for? "Big Content" isn't just dumping this traffic onto ISPs network, their paying customers are demanding it. Maybe if they have a problem with meeting that demand, they shouldn't go out of their way to advertise unlimited data and fast speeds and actually advertise what they can actually deliver.

Given your views, I guess you'd be okay with UPS charging you for a delivery plus charging Amazon because they sent the package to you.

  2. There are also thousands of sites which are upgraded, leaving only a small % left nationwide.

Going off the last NV Sites Complete map, 14.75% (if Clear sites are counted, higher if not) isn't a, 'small %'. But I see the point you're making and agree. Somehow, we've been extremely lucky in MN with regards to backhaul, save the Winona area.

  3. Lollipop and it's myriad of issues on the Nexus 5 has me seriously considering an iPhone in the future. I commute to and from work, which totals 3+ hours depending on weather and constant app closures due to memory leaks are just infuriating. Last thing I want to do is reopen Spotify every 30 mins or reopen Maps while using the navigation feature to auto find faster routes. Google seriously has dropped the ball on fixing the memory leaks even after two more releases to Lollipop, lets hope 5.1 addresses these things.

That and the absolute shit SoT time is just frustrating. 2.5 hrs of SoT is just unacceptable.

  4. I have been having an issue where my mobile data fails when connected to LTE. This just started about a week ago. I am on baseband .21, and it takes toggling data on and off to fix it. Any thoughts?

Experiencing the same issue. It's becoming more and more frequent.

  5. It works with the Nexus 5 if you manually override your device and account info. You will need root.

    Open this file:

    /data/data/com.sprint.zone/shared_preferences/com.sprint.zone_preferences.xml

Add the following lines with the correct values:

    <string name="funnyPref1">%NAI%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref2">%MEID-HEX%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref3">%RESELLER-ID%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref4">%MSID%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref5">%PRL-VERSION%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref6">%MDN%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref7">%MAKE%</string>
    <string name="funnyPref8">%MODEL%</string>

Mine looked similar to this when I was done (real info masked):

    <string name="funnyPref1">myname00@sprintpcs.com</string>
    <string name="funnyPref2">0123456789ABCD</string>
    <string name="funnyPref3">Sprint</string>
    <string name="funnyPref4">5045551212</string>
    <string name="funnyPref5">55021</string>
    <string name="funnyPref6">5045551212</string>
    <string name="funnyPref7">LG</string>
    <string name="funnyPref8">Nexus 5</string>

I found about these settings last year by reverse-engineering an older version of the app when it didn't work out-of-the-box on my Nexus S. They seem to exist for debugging purposes and will override the (not) detected values.

Thanks! This did the trick! Also, as far as "funnyPref1" goes, each person will have to figure out their NAI, mine ended in 02 instead of 00. I used the Nexus 5 Field Test app, then Settings(view) --> Data Profile --> View.

  6. This started happening to me today. My Nexus 5 will be sitting on band 26 at -95dBm and then get shunted to 3G. It'll scan back to LTE after a bit, keep it for a bit, then end up on 3G again.

Okay, yeah I thought something was up. I'm a mile away from a tower which usually gives me -70 to -85 dBm signal, but it just keeps flipping to eHRPD even with a slight move. It keeps flipping between that and Band 25 and 26.

So far, this only has happened in suburb of Chicago, where I'm currently visiting.

  7. What about Sprint supporting VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling on the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus? Will it happen?

Would be great to have simultaneous voice/data...

Apple only showed at&t, verizon and t-mobile for that portion. With t-mobile being the initial carrier supporting it.

  8. How likely is it that T-Mobile runs into the same backhaul issues Sprint is experiencing for their 2G-to-LTE upgrades? With their estimated time of completion, it looks like they don't expect to have the same issues, unless of course different types of backhaul will be used by T-Mobile, instead of mostly fiber.

  9. Not seeing an edit option on my post so I will update here. I looked in to the msl code thing and may try that I guess. But I am wondering if others have gotten this android update and why I may not have yet?

No one has gotten that update yet.

  10. Any reason for my phone not picking up LTE even though one of the Sprint tower in Austin has been 3G/800/LTE complete?  What's weirder is that SignalCheck now shows my connection as EV-DO all the time now, used to be eHRPD.  Not sure if that is significant or not.

  11. Haha, I had just looked at the map and was like who is the guy always talking about Austin.  Yes, backhaul delay is the safe assumption for why 3g and not LTE in Samsung markets.

Okay, thanks for the info.  Another question if you can answer or not, why not 3G 800?

  12. The future upgrade status of WiMax protection sites is unknown.  However, TD-LTE, will be deployed nationwide starting next year, on Sprint sites.

    Thank you for the info.

Looks like Austin finally moved from In Progress, but unfortunately only to 3G, but I guess they did both towers instead of only one.  Is fiber still the issue in Austin?

  13. All WiMax markets are being upgraded to TD-LTE. Many are well under way right now, and all should be completed converted by spring.

Every Sprint site is being upgraded to PCS LTE, and equipment is also added for SMR LTE. SMR LTE will start going live later this fall, and should be activated nationwide by spring. With the exception of near the Canadian and Mexican borders. Those areas will not see 800 anything for the foreseeable future. They will however see TD-LTE, as it will be deployed nationwide starting next year.

I know you said all WiMax markets are being upgraded to TD-LTE, but what about areas that had WiMax but wasn't advertised?  For example, I know there was/is(?) WiMax service by Clear/Sprint in the Mankato, MN area, but it wasn't advertised.  Will those areas get upgraded as well?
