  1. You know, there is so much variability, that I should not have even bothered to quote anything. There are two issues going on. Backhaul was behind, even before acceleration. And now it is compounded even further because of market acceleration. Sites where NV is being installed on time, backhaul is running approximately 2-5 weeks behind what was scheduled. And some of these, the backhaul just plain did not show up as scheduled (which is probably the case with your site).

In other instances where the site deployment is ahead of schedule, the backhaul will still not show up until its originally scheduled date, and probably 2-5 weeks later than that. So an accelerated site may not get backhaul for several months after NV upgrades. It's just really all over the place.

The only thing we can say for certain is backhaul continues to be deployed at a good steady clip and will eventually arrive at all sites. It does seem like backhaul deployment has picked up pace around Chicago.

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to call BS on the 2-5 weeks, I was more surprised about it considering how complex this market has proved for the field techs out there. But, you do make a good point that the back haul upgrades are starting to ramp up.... which is a real good thing :D

  2. No. Most likely the switch over from legacy equipment to NV equipment. The switch over does not necessarily include new backhaul at first, especially in Chicago. NV deployment is running pretty far ahead of backhaul. Backhaul seems to take 2-5 weeks after NV deployment on average around Chicago.

Is the average only 2-5 weeks? For my site, the Antenna/RRU/Cabinets went in on 3/8 and went live on NV 3/19. However, I didn't see backhaul come live until 7/11. I know you stated average... but I would think for my site, that would skew the average pretty bad :P

  3. That would be a very poor decision' date=' Sprint is actively accelerating the NV deployment in Chicago due to these issues. Chicagoland will probably have the best Sprint experience for quite sometime when the upgrade is complete.[/quote']

We desperately needed the accelerated deployment here in Chicago. I cannot stress how bad I was dropping calls when deployment kicked off. There were times I'd drop calls 5-10x per call standing still. It was atrocious.

  4. Getting these speeds consistently at 59 and Ogden, no lte yet

Well, definitely looks like the backhaul is in place there. Maybe LTE testing will kickoff soon, and you'll get to test it. Keep us posted.

Robert - Had one question for you. Last night when I noticed my phone dropping off 3G for switching to the new backhaul... there was not a soul at the site. Is this something that is done remotely?

  5. I am hitting a tower in Palatine right now and getting a ping of 189ms. I don't think it is complete yet.

Based on my speed tests the speed is a little slower than it was before. I'm sure that will be fixed soon enough.

    Sent from my EVO LTE

Were the speeds faster in the evening? If so, that might be due to a lighter load on the tower you were accessing. Or, you might be accessing a different tower in Palatine. Like for me, not all towers in Aurora are complete. There's another tower about 1.5 miles away from the tower I access, and that one is still on the legacy backhaul. So, odds are, not all towers in a specific "city" are going live on the new backhaul at the same time.

  6. DJ's work during the day??? ;)

    LOL, yes... Imagine that! :P

My regular 9-5 gig is at a tech support call center. I don't DJ as much as I used to... moving into management has really taken a toll on my free time these days :(

  7. wow, crazy speeds for 3G. I'd be happy with consistent speeds at 1.0 mbps.

Just curious, is your partner seeing this type of speed on his iphone today as well? I'm hoping this type of speed is consistent through out the day for multiple users.

I didn't think to have him check this morning. Can't check now since we're both at work, but once we get home, I'll post some more results from my phone, and what he's getting as well.

P.S. - In case anyone lives in the Aurora/South Naperville/Montgomery/Oswego area, this is tower CH03XC684. Located basically on the intersection of Eola and Hafenrichter Roads. Feel free to speedtest it if you're in the area! ;) (if anyone has an LTE capable phone, I'm dying to know if that's live on this tower)

  8. No worries! Turns out it might have been some sort of fluke or maybe a hiccup of bringing the new backhaul live. I just tested this morning and am consistently getting speeds faster than 2 mbps down. It's really amazing! For some reason forum runner is not letting me attach pics... I'll do it later when I get to a pc.

  9. Update: So after updating the PRL a bunch of times and rebooting, my iPhone is finally latching on to 3G. However... The 3G speeds are weird. Ping times are rock solid (between 90 and 110ms)... However download speeds are struggling to hit 1mbps but upload consistently is hitting 1mbps. My partner updated his PRL for the heck of it and now his iPhone can't latch onto 3G. Perhaps this PRL is no good or out of date for the network upgrade?? I've attached a speedtest screenshot.

  10. Okay now this is getting weird. My iPhone refuses to hold onto 3G, while my work blackberry is now picking up 3G and speed testing a consistent 1.1-1.5 mbps down. My partners iPhone is definitely showing signs the new backhaul is live. He's getting between 1.5 - 2.5 Mbps down on 3G. I've updated my iPhone with ##update# and rebooted... Still nothing. Running field test and watching the Evdo status is nuts. It's keeps jumping between channel 725, 550, 675, 650... All over the place. Any ideas what's going on?

  11. Well, seems like something is going on here in Aurora, specifically with site CH03XC684. Around 9:20pm, 3G dropped and I can only get 1x at this point. I know it's not my location since my home is only 1700~ feet from the tower. I'm really hoping they're cutting over to the new backhaul. I'll be periodically speed testing tonight.... Stay tuned for results. :)

  12. I work all over northern DuPage county (mobile) and the system is often unusable. My reason for posting is when I call Sprint to ask for compensation they insist that I wait til the system is fully functional. When I tell them many people have informed me that they have received credit' date=' Sprint tells me they are liars and NO ONE has recieved credit. The reps tell me that if I file for credit it will be refused. Are they lying to me?[/quote']

They're definitely lying to you. Get a supervisor on the phone and demand a credit for the poor service. I got a $50 credit a couple months ago because of the dropped calls.

  13. Im really curious as to why the first sites to receive On-Air status from Sprint seem to be Joliet' date=' Aurora, Elgin, Oak Brook, and the far NW Burbs. All of these sites are 30-40 miles away from downtown, the NW burbs area has very low population density, and some like Joliet/Elgin aren't really even considered suburbs of Chicago (they are too far). The whole thing seems to strange to me.[/quote']

Which tower in Aurora is showing on air? I live in Aurora and the data speeds here do not reflect 3G on the new back haul. Also, all the towns you listed are indeed considered Chicago suburbs, and Aurora has a population of almost 200,000. True, the population density is not like the city, but the NV issues are still impacting a lot of people in those towns you listed.

  14. It varies from market to market. Sponsors can see which sites are complete and which technology is being broadcast. Like 3G, 4G and 800. 3G going live is not connected to 4G dates necessarily

After reading the Chicagoland thread and how they're putting backhaul upgrades on hold to fix the tower handoff issue here, I had a thought... Sprint isn't planning on flipping the 4G switch without the enhanced backhaul right? That would make no sense :P

  15. After reading this thread... a lot of things are making sense now. The dropping calls were TERRIBLE from February (when they kicked off NV upgrades here) till about the middle of May. Lately though, I've noticed that call quality is MUCH better, but wondered why data was still slow. Makes sense that they put the NV equipment live before the backhaul. On a different note, I speedtested 3G last night at my home, and it hit 1.2Mbps.... I was like :D

  16. Sprint does not have plans to deploy 3G on 800 MHz. For most of the country, Sprint has about 14 MHz of 800 MHz spectrum and 10 MHz which will be used to deploy a 5x5 LTE carrier and a single 1x Advanced CDMA carrier. In certain parts of the country, Sprint will only be able to deploy a single 1x Advanced CDMA carrier and a 1.4x1.4 MHz OR 3x3 MHz LTE carrier due to potential interference issues with Mexico and Canada iDEN networks. There simply isn't enough 800 MHz spectrum to deploy 1x Advanced, 3G, and LTE.

Right on. Kinda what I figured, but I thought I'd ask anyway since the article gave the impression EVDO would be deployed on the 800 SMR band as well. Thanks for the info :)
