  1. Actually, Apple is holding a special event on September 12, 2012. This is when they'll be announcing the new iPhone and possibly the rumored 7" iPad. If this will be anything like last years announcement, then the new iPhone will launch in October.

  2.

that is the first time I have heard 'mybook live' and 'lightning fast' in the same sentence... let alone hanging off a low power router? edit: well I read that as meaning USB connected' date=' but then I realized you probably meant gbit ethernet connected, in that case disregard the bit about hanging off the router.

While I don't doubt it can handle basic file tranfer to your ps3, I have to wonder about your consideration of 'lightning fast'.

copy a bluray iso to it and back, and let me know how fast that is.[/quote']

Yeah it's connected via gigabit Ethernet not over wifi. I guess since this is my first NAS drive, maybe my idea of "lightning fast" may differ from yours. Now, if I'm transferring over wifi then yes, I'm limited to the max of 450mbps of the router instead of gigabit, which doesn't feel that quick.

  3. BTW AT&T has $62B worth of net debt. You don't hear much about that!

I think that Sprint just needs to execute on its Vision plan and reduce its roaming bill to a manageable amount like $250M instead of the $1B that it had couple of years ago. If that means that it limits the amount of roaming minutes allowed so be it. If it means that it kicks people off that are in marginal areas, so be it. If it means that it develops its network in said marginal areas, then so be it. They need to improve their margins to match the big two.

Moving the SMR band from iDen to 1x Advanced will definitely cut down on roaming costs :)

  4. Every smartphone activation comes with one ten thousandth of a share of Berkshire Hathaway stock and a free medium Dairy Queen Blizzard.

    AJ

So, based on this... I need my stock and blizzards delivered stat! :P

In regards to OP... I'm glad that this happened to VZW. I know it sounds a bit hater-ish, but seeing things like this just remind me why I continue to stay with Sprint. Forget those overpriced shared data plans and sneaky tactics to screw over customers!

  5. "I don't understand why people think Sprint holds any cards in this deal. "

You're right, but Apple is also conscious of the fact that a poor experience on any of the networks reflects poorly on Apple as well. For example, Apple took a lot of heat in regards to AT&T's 3G network problems.

This. Despite a carrier not giving the best support for the iPhone on certain spectrums, look at other forums/sites today and see how many people complain how their "iPhone sucks on Sprint!". Granted, some devices are marginally better than others in terms of data/voice performance, but don't think for one second that Apple isn't concerned about this. I'm pretty confident that Apple will support 1900 LTE and 800 1x Advanced in the next iPhone.

  6. Odell, something to consider here. You've mentioned a couple times that you didn't want your wife to worry about messing around with iTunes should she opt for the iPhone.

One of the big changes with iOS 5 was iCloud. The benefit of having everything in the "cloud" was not having to mess around in iTunes at all! You can setup the phone right out of the box, no connecting to iTunes. Plus, if she did ever purchase any music on the phone, you can snag it off the cloud via iTunes and vice versa. So... really she wouldn't have to use iTunes much, if at all :)

  7. Question for those of you that know more about NV.

How does a city which is Sprint NV complete compare to a city that is covered by Verizon?

I understand that Sprint is updating back haul and launching improved 3G and new LTE on 1900 in 2012-2013. Sprint will launch LTE on 800 in 2013. Clear will launch LTE on 2500 starting in 2013 for those urban environments.

I just dont know anything about the verizon network and how it compares. Any insight? I'm in Chicago, Verizon definitely has great 3G and LTE coverage here. I believe LTE is on 700 so it penetrates buildings well.

    Thanks

You might want to check out this thread

    http://s4gru.com/ind...lte-on-verizon/

Some good discussion on how Verizon's 700MHz band isn't so great with LTE in terms of building penetration.

  8. It's not quite like that. Samsung has local subcontractors doing most of the work. Samsung provides design, equipment and installation/schedule management. Samsung should be able to start in other markets with little or no impact to current markets being deployed.

    Robert

Sorry... guess I should've been a little more clear on my post. As you already know, my tower's backhaul finally went live about a month ago. However, something went kaput Sunday night... and all my Sprint phones are now roaming. I was more or less teasing that they don't forget about that tower before hitting up second round market. I'm also aware of the whole sub-contractor thing. There was a thread about how cell companies manage this stuff, and watched that video about AT&T's massive network upgrade a few years back. Pretty insane stuff how these field techs get paid next to nothing for such a high risk job.

  9. I'm in bridgview and I wanted to get the galaxy s3 but I'm gonna have to put up with 3g speeds for a bit.

I have some family near Midway which isn't far from you, and their service tanked recently. So, that definitely sounds like full blown NV deployment.

  10. I've been having same problems and it's getting really annoying. I don't get phone calls' date=' my texts come 1 day late, and my voice mails never show up. Every time I talk to sprint they keep telling me to update the prl & the profile and it doesn't change anything.[/quote']

What part of Chicago are you in? Sounds like an area where NV deployment is in full gear. Unfortunately, calling Sprint will just aggravate you more since they'll just say there are network upgrades in progress and have you try things like updating profiles and PRLs. I can promise once the towers in your area are complete everything will be cherry :)

  11. Everyone needs to keep in mind that we have a ton more information on this site than sprint would like us to have. Hell' date=' we have more information then most mid level corporate Sprint sales people do. Without the knowledge we get at this site if sprint launched a market we would have no clue how many cell towers actually were completed and what percentage areas were launched at. Keep that in mind before we go after Sprint with pitchforks and torches.

This is so true. In fact, I had to call Sprint today because for some reason, I'm roaming at my house, when there's a tower only ~1700ft away. When I called, I advised that my phone shouldn't be roaming when a tower is that close and the rep agreed. The rep asked for my zip, which I provided and I then offered the tower ID. She was a little shocked, but took the info. After being on hold for about 5 mins, I was updated that there is a reported issue with the tower and techs were being dispatched to repair it. She then says, "you know in all the years I've been at Sprint, I've never had a customer give the tower ID to me. I'm quite impressed and it was very helpful". I had briefly mentioned this site (didn't give the name of it) and she was surprised that there's a community out there that just talks about NV.

Long story short, we should all be incredibly thankful this community exists. I know I am :)

And if you ever suspect an issue with a specific tower, give the tower ID... It really helps tech support ;)

  12.

Also I no longer can get a 4g signal at 95th and 59. I just hope that chicago's lte will be a little faster

Are you noticing inconsistent 3G speeds at that intersection? Was curious since my tower (@Eola and Hafenrichter) is all over the place now.

  13.

Okay' date=' I guess iHeads are welcome to play, too. Is there some website we all can look at describing these iOS apps?[/quote']

There are no iOS apps available for this in the official app store. The API required to make the app is not available from Apple, and the only other option is to jailbreak and get the app off cydia, which is only compatible with GSM networks. So, for us with the CDMA iPhones, there's nothing out there to map towers :(

  14. ill take those 3g speeds any day. the tower near my house that had its NV radios installed a few weeks ago gives me a whopping .07/mbps down regularly

Oh I totally get where you're coming from. I was experiencing the same speeds before the new backhaul went live here. I guess I'm just concerned with the performance and am really hoping that the vendor is working out kinks before handing off to Sprint.

  15.

I also get extremely poor connections all the way down Winfield Road north of I-88' date=' drop calls constantly, no 3G or dial-up speed 3G, and switches back and forth from roaming. Dead zones, or just a side effect of NV upgrades?[/quote']

I feel your pain here. My office building is off Ferry, butting up to 88, right by Winfield. Even with cell repeaters in the office building, I'll drop calls like crazy.

As for the tower by my house, data speeds have been all over the place. It seems as if I hit 2 Mbps less frequently and more frequently hit speeds less than 1 Mbps. Is Samsung still working out kinks with the NV equipment or are more people using 3G now that they noticed better speeds?

  16. Stupid question....but are these towers STAYING live??!

I doubt it. I'm willing to bet what's happened in other markets where LTE will be up a while, then block the general public will happen here.

  17.

this was at 95th and 59 in Naperville. Had a full signal will a 54ms ping. Files to big to upload from my phone for the screenshot

Can you try to test the tower by Eola and Hafenrichter roads? I'm curious if LTE is live over here. 95th and 59 is like 5 mins from that intersection, so I wonder if tower CH03XC684 is live on LTE as well.

  18. I didn't take it that way. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has the same background info in their head when I communicate a point. To me, my point was obvious in context with what I said. Once I read your response, I realized I need to add a lot more information to the explanation.

I'm not a thin skinned guy. I eat too much fried chicken. ;)

    Robert

LOL, and I just had wings for lunch... mmmm

Anyhoo, sorry, I didn't take your post incorrectly either... was just making sure we're all on the same page :P
