  1. iOS Engineering screen is accessed by dialing *3001#12345#* then call. If you're connected to LTE select the Serving Cell Info and the band will be listed (PCS is band 25, SMR is the elusive 26 and the 5s isn't capable of band 41). If you're not in an area with LTE you'll have an option for 1x and EVDO. The band won't be listed on 1x (it used to on the 4s, but for some reason it's excluded on the 5, 5c, & 5s). EVDO will show frequency and band.

    Thanks! :)

  2. You should have been able to grab LTE from there. The tower on Whipple Road has LTE active, but the sectors are strange.....its hard to connect to that tower for LTE.

Unfortunately I can't snag LTE with my iPhone... Still have a 4S :(

But it was promising to see great 3G performance again. 3G in the Aurora/Montgomery area seems to have slowed down a bit.

  3.

Yes. But AT&T is not stupid. They wouldn't push it so far as to break the law or even their contract. But they will push it to the maximum threshold. The maximum tolerable malfeasance.

And it's things like this that just urk me to no end. It's one thing to be a competitive company by offering better solutions and implementations over your competition, but when you play dirty, it says a lot about your "strategic" positioning. Sure it works, but to me there's no strategy in that approach... You're just nothing more than a bully.

And to stay on somewhat on topic.. When will Sprint obtain control of the spectrum they're getting from USCC? That's still happening right?

  4. The Sprint store at Eola and Aurora roads in Aurora has an LTE signal on their in-store iPhone 5. No way for me to load/run speedtest on it though.

Can you check for LTE by my tower? Right by Eola and Hafenrichter.

  5. Two things come to mind. One...for whatever reason, the 3G is not hooked up the new backhaul yet. Two...your site does not have backhaul problems, but capacity problems. Chicago is a spectrum constrained market for 3G. If your site has the maximum number of carriers deployed, then 4G will be needed to offload and provide relief for 3G. Sprint has a lot more 4G spectrum options in the long run than 3G.

I think what would be a good way to try to determine if your site has upgraded backhaul connected to 3G is to run speed tests in the middle of the night. If they are consistently over 2Mbps, but drop off really low during the day on the same site, then you likely have a capacity problem and not a backhaul problem. If it only goes up to 1.4 or less with little to no burden, then you do not have upgraded backhaul.

Just make sure you go to the EVDO Engineering screen and make sure you are always on the same site when making these comparisons. Its possible that you think you are on a site with 4G completed, but you may be being shunted to another site with less usage nearby.

I have a theory that this happens more often with the iPhone, because I think it may have a stronger radio. It has more sites it can connect to. And often they get stuck on a poorer performing distant site. My theory this is the biggest cause for all those people who report their Sprint iPhone was slower than their Android handset running right beside it.

Robert... what would I do without you? :P

Seriously though... I didn't think about the carrier being overloaded at all. My tower definitely has backhaul, because at night I occasionally can hit 2Mbps or higher.

But now when I think about it... your comment about constrained 3G spectrum was a bit unsettling. Is it because they're reallocating different blocks to LTE? If that's the case, I hope this iPhone 5 launch will have more people offloading on LTE so 3G isn't killin me.

  6. You know what surprises me a lot here... some of these places people are seeing 4G, are the same places where 3G is still painful. In my head, if 4G works, then the site is totally updated.... panels, RRUs, backhaul...etc. Why would 3G still be so slow? I'm trying not to sound negative here... it's just a little frustrating :(

  7. I highly doubt that they will raise the prices of existing contracts. They will probably raise the base rates for new customers. They won't do anything unless they feel they can sustain/grow their customer base. They will undoubtedly start disallowing SERO plans to be renewed at some point as they don't make jack from those contracts, so as long as they still have a decent customer base, they won't be hurt by losing those customers. Their customer satisfaction numbers will probably go up as well once they dump all those contracts.

What they'll probably do is "force" you to change your plan when you get a new phone because the "old plan" isn't compatible with your device. (aside from SERO... those are bound to become extinct)

  8. So anyone know WHY they dropped the wimax system which showed a separate signal bar for 4g than for voice?

Probably because WiMax ran on a different spectrum than CDMA (2500MHz vs 1900MHz). Odds are it was probably easier to make separate signal meters for those two spectrums. With the new NV config, that may complicate it just a tad as CDMA and LTE will run simultaneously on the same spectrum (at least for now until LTE on SMR goes live, which would then add another layer of complexity).

  9. Sprint web site has that the 16GB iphone will ship in two weeks, while the other 2 are available for delivery on 9/21. Wish the ISN guy was still around to give the updates..

I think Sprint is having slower pre-order sales compared to last year. I remember the 16GB sold out right away (still the same this year)... however the 32GB was sold out by the monday following pre-order kickoff. Doesn't seem to be the case this year.

EDIT: Just had a thought... could be possible that all the people that already have the Sprint iPhone 4S are not likely to upgrade since it would be minimum $649 to get a new iPhone 5.

  10. Well it looks like the Apple store will be getting my business. Sprint is still showing $149 for the 4S and my local store said that there are no plans to match the Apple store offerings. I may tweet Sprint and see what kind of response I get.

You could always wait till 9/21 to see if it drops first before racing off to the apple store. Unless there's a immediate need to have it now :P

  11. That is probably referring to CDMA850. Apple calls CDMA on 850mhz CDMA800. we will need to see the band classes, but them no separating the two, and using CDMA 800, 850,1900,2100 makes me believe SMR did not make the cut this year.

Well that's too bad. Good thing I got a 4S at launch... I can't upgrade till June 2013. At that point I'll just wait for the next iPhone... hopefully that one will support the SMR bands for 1xA and LTE. *fingers crossed*

  12. How about starting with all of Sprint's bands and going from there?

Are you asking what bands the new iPhone will support Sprint wise?

For sure it will support 1900 PCS. As for 800 SMR and 1900 LTE... We shall see tomorrow. Let's hope for the best!

  13. Look at the LTE ads on the TV lately. Especially the Verizon one where they boast there 300+ markets with LTE... All this PR from the providers absolutely has everything to do with the new iPhone.
