Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. have rekindled merger talks, people familiar with the matter said, as the wireless rivals explore a combination for the third time in four years.

The latest discussions come just five months after a previous courtship collapsed largely over who would control the combined firm. The talks also come in the midst of an antitrust fight between the U.S. government and AT&T Inc.

It is unclear what terms the two sides are considering, and it is possible, as before, that they could fail to reach an agreement. The latest discussions are at a preliminary stage, the people said.

The talks are complicated by the ownership of the two firms. Japanese telecom giant SoftBank Group Corp. owns nearly 85% of Sprint. Germany’s Deutsche Telekom AG controls T-Mobile, which is the larger company both in terms of subscribers and market value.

Well, if they become advanced look for CAPEX to be slashed yet again. I have been a big proponent of this merger but this start and stop BS is really hurting sprint.

To be fair Marcelo has not been with them for the last decade. He was handed alot that takes years to recover from. People talk about TMO while forgetting att paid for that. If Sprint would have gotten that money the would likely be where TMO is also.

Marcelo is the worst at over hyping and under deleverying. He basically lied for 6 months about the progress of their small cell deployment only to turn around and call it a "misunderstanding".

Marcelo has near zero credibility. I am still waiting for sprint to have the number one network, it was going to take 18 months some 36 months ago. I wonder where they are at on that.

Right now, nobody is moving to acquire the spectrum. Dish has not borrowed against it. The perceived value of their spectrum will fall further once these other bands are opened up.

I wouldnt make that bet. Spectrum is finite and IoT is the big bet wireless is making. That will put further demand on wireless networks.

  4. 7 hours ago, bigsnake49 said:

That's one analyst's opinion who is probably invested in the stock. The spectrum is not worth anything until somebody makes an offer on it.

That is simply not true. The spectrum is worth what people believe it to be worth. Dish can borrow against it, that perceived value is built into their stock price and it is built into any calculation of any prespective buyer of the company. Value is subjective.

You paid what $20B for spectrum, would you not want some return on investment? Plus If you go at it alone you still will need about 9-10B for a nationwide network. Spectrum is plentiful with the CBRS band, the 3.7-4.2GHz band, the LAA/WiFi band and the 28GHz band.

They are earning a return on it, it is now worth 30 billion. They have earned 10 billion in less than ten years and didnt have to lift a finger.

Same here. I think that Dish just needs to lower their valuation of their spectrum so that them and sprint can come to a mutually beneficial agreement. What you hear from Dish about IOT is total BS. Nobody will be making any serious money solely out of iOT. Dish's spectrum will be used for video in the mdiband and lowland to fill in the holes in the 2.5GHz network. Dish can sell mobile video for their Sling package on the Sprint network. Both should share in the deployment cost and the additional capacity. I would prefer that Dish's 600Mhz be used mainly for VOLTE.

Why? That doesnt seem like it woukd be a responsible decision for Dish's shareholders. Time is on Dish's side, as far as their spectrum goes, and building out a protection network buys them more of it.

I am not so sure about sprint NOT making the investment. Masa wanted to merge with someone who would benefit sprint. “Not” making the investment or possibly strategic planning? Meaning why keep paying to upgrade when we know 5g is coming. I think sprint may have had a window where they figured if they merge/Buy/sell it won’t set them any further behind. If it falls through, Plan B is 5g buildout asap.

All of the areas that are lacking will be brought up to par with 5g rollout anyways. I know it sounds confusing but if sprint was “shopping itself” I think they were thinking wait and see before they upgrade as mentioned before many towers are co located which would have been unnecessary had the merge gone through. It hasn’t disrupted the 5g plans so I “think” this may have been their strategy or plan b of it all along.

Sprint could fix the network tomorrow and people still wouldn’t come in flocks because of the bad rep. But if sprint gets its 5g out and can brag speeds or they could do a big media push and start to get people’s attention?

You have to fix the network to fix the reputation. This idea that fixing the network wont bring people to this is dumb. The network is their product, if their product is solid and backed by a good advertising campaign their reputation would change.

An incinsistent 5g network isnt going to bring people flocking back. That was their exact strategy with WIMAX and it failed bad. They starved their core network of funds leading to 5 years of nearly zero investment above depreciation to pour funds into a wimax network that wasnt nation wide and in the areas it was launch was spotty as hell.

This is from Shentel's recent earnings call:

"As I have discussed before, our wireless customers are twice as likely to churn if they live in a county on the parameter [perimeter] of our network

The reason is that for many of our customers their community of interest is outside of our network. So, they often travel into the Sprint network areas, they don't have the quality of service that Sprint provides in the urban areas."

This is very true where I live which borders Loudoun County - where Sprint signal goes to die. (Clarke, and Frederick are in Shentel's footprint).

    This is really sad.

It is called net job creation. It does the company no good to maintain an inefficient labor structure. Eventually that leads to 100% of people in that company losing their job.

Couldn't help myself.  Got to work today and went to put my lunch in the fridge.  I noticed the microwave, did a double-take, then took this picture:

I sent it to my wife with a note, "We must have good reception on the microwave today.  4 bars."

    I'll show myself out.

I knew they were coming out with a new magic box, but i never would have thought.

    LG V30

I love my v30+. It is one of the best phone I have owned. It does have one major problem, about 50 percent of the time if it goes to 1xrtt 800 it wont reconnect to lte until it is put into airplane mode or powered off. When i first got the phone it would do it every time. I have no issues with reception, but since I live in phoenix and there are many places were you fall to 1xrtt because of the awful site spacing this can get annoying.

Sprint’s issuing $1 Billion of Notes.

”Sprint intends to use the net proceeds from the offering for general corporate purposes.”

    Thoughts on this?

I wonder if they had trouble getting another spectrum lease co offering to market. Why would they go for the higher interest rate of loan not back by asserts?

Minus the upload speeds, do these numbers really show a difference in real world usage? I don’t think so. It is good to see Sprint have a average above 20mbps now.

With the up load speed they don't show a differnece in real world use. The problem with sprint in real world use in my area is the many places were I walk in doors and lose LTE and the fact I cant stream video on the move because the network is inconsistent. These problems are only partially picked up in average speed tests results.

If They are right about there numbers, then they are making the right moves. It is up to the consumer to make sure they are on the best rate plan for them. If the cost of sprint reaching out and  lower that customer price point isnt offset by the additional revenue for whatever the subsequent reduction in churn they are making the right call.
